A CALL TO MY FELLOW RAW VEGANS TO TACKLE SCHOOL NUTRITION

this really is the breeding ground of children s thoughts on nutrition. i have begun emailing and calling the education boards and school districts' nutritionists of the local and surrounding schools in my area. i think together with all of us around the country and world, at this angle, can have such a great impact on destroying the dairy industry and helping to heal our kids! this is the last email i wrote please evaluate it, what works and doesn't. and PLEASE contribute by editing it, giving new ideas on the best wording and studies to use. its a good template to start with for all you out there would like the email and call the school districts near you.

Hello Theresa, My name is Arnie Rodriguez, a resident on Solano County and former student of the Vacaville Unified School District. I have a new mission in life to help heal people. I know that dairy products are one of the biggest health destroyers in the world. there are hundreds of studies that prove this from the most prestigious and respectable institutions in the world. i advise you, as nutritionist, to review this information so we can take these posters of the walls of school, and take milk and other dairy products out of the schools as well. We can no longer let the corporate dairy industry prey on us and our children with their poison. Dairy is proven to cause hundreds of dis-eases and ailments. Everything from acne, asthma, allergies, arthritis, and those are just the "A's"! i could continue on with osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, increased risk of prostate and ovarian cancers, and other CANCERS!
the 'calcium' and 'protein' myths of milk could be no further from the truth.

Another very important issue to address is fat content. in schools ive seen '2%' milk and 'vitamin d' milk. in actuality, this "2%" milk is 35% fat. this is how it weighs out:
100 grams of whole milk contain 60 calories
its weight:
88.3 grams of water
0.7 grams of ash (solid residue)
4.5 grams of carbohydrates (4x calories per gram = 18 carb calories)
3.2 grams of protein (x4 calories per gram = 13 protein calories)
3.3 grams of fat (x9 calories per gram = 30 fat calories
---------------------------
100 grams total
as you can see, 88% of the milk's weight (the water) provides no calories. among the remainder, 3.3 grams out of the 100 grams are fat, which is why the milk's label indicates "3.25 % milk fat."

however, protein, fat, and carbohydrates do not contain similar energy value; fat packs more than twice the calories of an equivalent amount of carbohydrates or protein. In rough numbers, each of the 3.3 grams of fat contain appox. 9 calories, while the 32 grams of protein and 4.5 grams of carbohydrates contain about 4 calories each.

Thus, in terms of calories, 30 of the 60 calories in whole milk come from fat, a fact the dairy industry is very happy to obscure. fat content of 100 grams of common fluid milk products:

whole milk ("3.25% milk fat") 60 cals 30 from fat = 50% fat
reduced fat milk ("2% milk fat") 50 cals 17 from fat = 35% fat
Low-fat milk ("1% milk fat") 42 cals 9 from fat = 20% fat

schools these days are packed with fat kids and the children and their parents should know this information, and the deception behind Lindsey Lohan's milk moustache.
i advise you to look at the protein and calcium content of plant foods, and realize that there is no need for dairy products in human life, it is actually extremely detrimental. please check out the websites i have linked below! i would love to meet with you and discuss how we can work together making our people healthier, happier, and keeping them out of the doctors office! I LOVE what you do with the 'fruit and vegetable' posters! i would like to contribute to those posters and possibly even contribute new designs.

Well, I would probably have left out 'fat kids' and maybe used 'obese children'.

I work in a school district. I am disgusted by the food that is being served. On top of that, there is no choice here. Not even a choice for salad. (I'm the only vegetarian I know in town). It is so hard to tell my daughter, "No, you can't eat the food at school today." We have the same rotation every 2 weeks. When there are grapes and apples, you can scratch your name on them in the wax. (I did this in front of some first graders. They were grossed out.)

Because my district is so small, I'm not quite ready to make more waves than I have so far. I think school nutrition is something everyone should be aware of. I love what you are doing, and I think more people should get involved. I'm not saying transform the cafeterias into raw vegan cuisine, just healthier.

Milk is served at every meal here. Elementary students HAVE to get milk. That is their only beverage choice, so most get Chocolate milk. This last week it was:

Biscuits & Jelly - Egg Rolls, Rice, Broccoli (nice and green, smelled rotten), Fruit
Pigs in a blanket - Chicken Burger, Burger Salad, Ranch Style Beans (Yeah, with the animal fat), Fruit
Waffles - Chili Hog Dogs, Corn on the Cob, Fruit
Toast & Yogurt - Steak fingers with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans (w/bacon), fruit
Cinnamon Rolls - Pizza (with mystery meat), mixed veggies, fruit

What I do have to say is kind of sad: This is one of the healthier weeks. I have no idea how to approach this problem here.

great idea, obese sounds professional. is that fruit the canned syrupy fruit?

Reply to This

Sometimes the fruit is like that. Usually it's a banana, an apple, grapes, cut up oranges. I can say that is the one good thing opposed to last year. Before it was mostly the canned stuff. I even appreciate them offering boxes of raisins sometimes too. The wax thing is gross though.

They serve carrots sometimes, but they are the commodity "cut" carrots. They don't take the time to cut them down more so a lot of the little ones won't eat them.

Wow leslie, that is scary. Have you guys heard of the garden school? They use the garden as a classroom & it ends up cheaper to feed the kids more healthily once the crops come in.

That sounds great...I wonder what it would take to get that going here.

Only problem is the state gives us so much "commodity" food that HAS to be used.

We are rural Texas, I see no reason we couldn't have a garden. May be some state laws to deal with.

Cinnamon powder is used in Chinese medicine for colds and flus. Use lots. Iodine is also good for killing viruses and preventing sickness. I like Atomidine brand, but nascent is good, too.
