Give it to me Raw

Yes I have read the book. Multiple times front to back.
My issues are these:
1) I live in Minnesota and cannot find non-irradiated tropical fruit this time of year. I pretty much have my choice of oranges or bananas. Oh, and apples. Yeah, yay, yippee. Boring!
2) I'm cold as all hell. I do almost-daily yoga as well as pole dancing. I bike as a mode of transportation in the warmer weather only. I cancelled my gym membership because it was a horrible soul-suck of a place.
3) Tanning packages at the salon down the street from where I work seem to be the only way I could get some sun on my body. It's dark when I get up and dark when I leave work.
4) I can't move to a warmer climate at this point in my life. My album is being finished here, I don't make a lot of money and most of my paychecks go to food right now.

So what should I do? I always gravitate back to 80/10/10 but it's getting a little bit harder due to the above. Suggestions from durianrider and others would be much appreciated. Bring in the 80/10/10 crusaders!!!

i've been doing a lot of apples and plums...bee pollen and sunflower sprouts for Vit-D....horsetail tea to keep warm.
oranges are a great fruit to be eating, but i can't handle them. Not all imported fruit is irradiated. Do some more greens but just keep looking for local fruits...pears, apples, plums, oranges, mangos, papaya.

Hi Raw'r.
If you or anybody else could explain which imported fruit is irradiated and which isn't I'd love to know. It's a question that's been bugging me for a month. Is there a way to find out (for somebody living in the U.S., Canada or anywhere for that matter)?

i dont know about irradiation, but some fruit, even organic, is hot-water treated. i know this for sure about mangos. i used to work for an organic produce delivery company. the boxes of mangos that came in said right on them that they were hot water treated. i dont know what the duration of this is or whatever..if its just a quick-dip then maybe it doesnt "cook" it past the skin... but just a heads-up. theres really no way around it though...i think any mangos from out of the country have to be treated like this. these were from mexico. i dont know about other fruits. also, can organic fruit be irradiated without telling us?

hey apryl electra--if youre near minneapolis, why not contact ecopolitan and see if they can refer you to a good source of non-irradiated tropical fruit. i mean, they must use fruit in their restaurant, right? and i bet they would make sure it wasnt irradiated.

I'm dealing with this stuff too.

1) Tasty, expensive fruit can be used as a "condiment" to make a boring meal more interesting. For example, the place I shop has raw figs and persimmons, which I love. They come from California, and in this case I don't care if they're organic or not. They cost 50 cents each. Today I had ONE persimmon. That's all it took to set my appetite in motion. I then devoured a whole bag of organic oranges!
2) Small doses of sunlight and fresh air are better than nothing. On days off from work I make a point of forcing myself to go outside for as long as I can stand it. Once I'm outdoors and walking around, I realize that it isn't as bad as my mind made it out to be. As long as I'm bundled up with enough clothes it can actually be fun.
3) I'm not 100% 811rv yet. Lately I've been supplementing vitamin D, which in my case means drinking store-bought, fortified hemp milk.

I hope this is helpful. It can be tough this time of year.

No fair! The persimmons at my co-op are $1.99 each!!!

I do try to stand and gaze at the sun (not directly, you know what I mean) when I take the dog out in the morning or on my walk back from yoga. If the sun is out, that is.

I used to think bananas were boring until one day all I had at home was about ten of them which I quickly devoured, and they are now one of my favourite fruits.

Do you get any dates in your area? I find these help when I'm struggling and feeling cold.

Also I have no shame in carrying my doona around the house to the bemusement of my housemate. It's like having a mobile warm bed. Best you can do is rug up and hibernate till summer, or get out there and move to create warmth.

I really feel for you though as there's nothing I hate more than being cold. Melbounre isn't the warmest place in the world but I can imagine where you are is much much colder.

Currently it's 17 (8.3 C) degrees out and windy! No snow, just freezing!
I don't blame you for carrying around a big blanket! My "office" at work is in a cold stock room with the desk by a drafty door. I've thought about keeping a blanket there!

In the winter I don't wear an apron, I have a special sweatshirt to prepare food in so I stay warm and free from messes!

You know that I am from Wisconsin?!
So, Baby, I am even under worse conditions then you are sometimes ;-)

Truly, during my winter times I live of green juices and miso soups/coconut soups. That's how it has to be, otherwise I am freezing.
I love Minneapolis!

Adaptation to ones environment :) Love it Rawvolta! When I am in the tropics I will eat most of the fruit because it come to my hands in pristine condition. When in PA I eat less exotic "fresh" fruit and tend to balance out greens, fats, and fruit. My staple over here are the berries native to PA. They are by far the best food. No hybridization and not sugary. Fruits nowadays are way too sweet for my liking. :)
