In less then a year I have had 3 cavities. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I take very good care of me teeth....I floss and brush several times a day. It's disheartening to be eating the 'best food' yet have my teeth deteriorating. I love raw food and feel wonderful eating this way but am concerned that it is not the best thing for my body.
Do you get much sun exposure or take vitamin D supplements? Also, how high was your diet in calcium rich foods like collard greens, sesame seeds, and figs?
It's that the raw vegan diet is high in sugar (fruit) and low in minerals and vitamins A and D. Try adding a cup of raw milk, OR a few raw pastured egg yolks AND a good spoonful of fermented cod liver oil (www.greenpastures.org) to your intake every day and you'll seen those cavities heal up.

What does your diet look like? Are you mostly raw with some pastured eggs and cod liver oil and raw milk? I'd love to see a run down of what you eat.
thanks.

Taking calcium and phosphate in the diet results in reenamelization of the teeth. Source
For optimal dental heath, calcium and phosphate levels must be maintained. Both are found in saliva which constantly bathes the teeth and prevents tooth dissolution.source

Things that have helped me or that I have observed in my time as an aspiring low fat raw vegan (cooked/high raw vegan for 6 years)
Nuts make the problem much worse!
Fruit does not, but citrus does, best to rinse to mouth well with water after fruit, and drink juice with a straw
Chewing on wheatgrass, but not swallowing, juice juicing it with you teeth like a cow would, magic for teeth
horsetail silica supplement, worth a try, seems to help
Don't use abrasive paste or an abrasive brush. I rinse my mouth frequently with water. I usually brush with just water and a soft brush. About once a week I give my teeth a brushing with Uncle Harrys tooth powder which is a sea salt/mustard/clay base.
Teeth are actually a route that the body can take for detoxification. Increase your exercise and cause some of that crap to go out via the skin instead of the teeth.
At 25 years old, I only have had 1 Cavity that developed after being vegan 2 years. WIthin about a month of applying the above ideas (though I know longer take the supplement, cause it doesn't seem necessary to be anymore) that cavity decreased and no news ones have appeared. My dentist is always shocked at my teeth and even more shocked when he saw the cavity before, wanted to drill it, I said lets look at in again in a month, then a month later he was shocked to see that at this point he thought I could get away with just a seal.
Vegans and raw vegans can have great teeth! You just have to think outside the box sometimes.
I had the same thing happen when i first went raw--4 of them! i read in DW's book about the teeth de-mineralizing and taking some time to re-mineralize. Zoe has some great info on Chris losing all his mercury fillings. I don't know why, but it happens and it does stabilize--haven't had a cavity since and that was almost 4 years ago.

I watch a lot of TV. For a normal person, it's probably too much, but for an aspiring TV writer, it's probably not enough. I watch Top Chef, Project Runway, Heroes, Gossip Girl, Greek, Biggest Loser, Glee, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, and Bon...
