Has anyone experienced low estrogen levels while being a raw vegan. Also, if anyone has any good and specific sources about the link between hormones and diet I would be greatly appreciative. I've read all the big books so I'm really looking for specifics (and yes I have a doctor, this is just more research). Also looking for info that is NOT menopause related.
This is turning out to be a fascinating topic and I am learning so much. I had no idea about any of these effects of a raw vegan diet on us women! Sounds like things just keep getting better! I will post a roundup of information this weekend on my blog (www.buellerskitchen.com) in my "girls corner" . This is where I discuss everything girly about everything I have found as I continue my mad research. I'll also include what people have shared here as well as links, books, references, etc. so we can all keep learning as there doesn't seem to be much out there on this topic. I think it'd be nice to have a bunch of resources in one place, don't you?
I've created a group called Raw Women. I hope all you ladies will join!

so I was wondering, is there a way to know if you are still ovulating, besides the fluid changes? Is there a difference between this loss of menstruation and that of people with anorexia or who exercise a lot and it stops? Actually, I was telling my husband about this, and he was intrigued, but wondered if it is really "healthy" . I'm pretty sure it is, it makes sense to me about the toxins, but I just wondered how you would know if you really are still ovulating? My ovulation seems a little off since I went to the Tree and did a juice fast, then raw food for a few weeks there and at home. Since my eating isn't consistent yet, I can't tell, and havent' lost my period.
Also, how would you do the "fertility tracking" if you can't tell when the "first day of your period " is? Or can you tell by the mucus?
Hi Ladies! I have to tune in my two cents....when I went 100% raw a few years ago, my heavy periods ceased almost within a single cycle! (crazy fast results right?) I still did experience a monthly discharge--very slight mucous for a day or two-- but the best part was I FELT great. I have a really rough time believing that anyone HAS to experience crazy heavy bleeding or cramping...and I like the point someone made to me at the time that animals in the wild do not have monthly visits from "aunt flo" UNLESS that is, they have been domesticated yes yes!! cats and dogs on their SADiets have been known to menstruate! WOAH, right?
I have a question though, any foodies without heavy monthly bleeding currently on birth control? the pill really screwed me over for a year or two (I went crazy-like) and I DEFINATELY had my period then. (mmmmm "sexy" right? I don't think so!)
so what are ya women using? the good old condom? what?
Great post women! Let's keep networking. AND PLEASE someone publish something, so we don't all have to be looking for that same article that is probably way outdated by now. : ) peace. Caitlin

I use the "natural method", which works pretty well, really well, except when you are overly excited and decide to do something anyway, which you could do with condoms too. Thats how we got our 3 kids. :) Well, we wanted kids, too....
There are several books about it. You can take your temp. every morning before you get up to get an idea, but also watch your mucus flow--have you noticed it gets mucousy and at one point sort of hangs out of you? thats when you are ovulating. If you're regular, you can count what day that is, add a few days on either side, especially before, because sperm can live a few days, but once you ovulate, the egg dies in about 12 hours or less. You can get a girl by having sex before the egg drops down, because the girl sperm can hang around longer than the boy ones, they are faster but die off faster. So if you want a boy, wait until the stringy stretchy stuff is coming out, because that's when the egg is really ready.
I know you don't want to GET pregnant, but I wanted to share that interesting info!!!! :)
So here are the keys
1 Take your temp with a detailed thermometer ( forgot what they're called) (yeah, basal I think) and preferably chart it.
2. watch for mucous
3. with the temp chart figure out which days you're ovulating, and abstain for 2-3 days before and 1-2 days after(or use a condom then)
There are great books, but I forget what the one I read is called . Something about Taking charge of your fertility.
Its completely reliable if you are regular and if you DO abstain or use a condom when you are fertile.
I used the diaphram for awhile, but I started to hate putting that chemical goo on it, and it seemed to give me yeast infections.

One more thing, there is a condom for no latex people called Naturlamb. Its definitly not vegan though!! But works for preventing pregnancy, not STDS though.

Ok that was really silly, but Ihope you read the book. I left out How to use the temp chart. The temp chart will show a huge jump at one point. That is the day you ovulate. However, you can't just use the temp method, because by the time your temp jumps, you already are ovulating, and if you had intercourse last night, you can get pregnant, because the sperm are lively and can hang out awhile.
Then when you "menstruate" (or not, as we are seeing ont his board) your temp will drop again.
If you take your temp for several months you can get an idea which day of the month you ovulate, and then use the "counting" method along with.
OH!!!! ONe more marvelouse thing, You can buy great little "ovulation scopes" where you put on your saliva, let it dry, and then you can look at the pattern. It makes a nice little ferney pattern when you are ovulating, and just globs otherwise. Its really cool!! they are about $20 I think. I just used mine last night, and I think I'm ovulating on like day 4 or something. Really weird. Maybe that's why i haven't gotten pregnant for 31/2 years even though we've not been too carefyul sometimes!! What on earth!! Maybe I'm not ovulating at all, I don't know, but it was ferney this very morning...... :) I love this discussion, can you tell????

Maybe you could be a midwife instead. They know more anyway!! :) hee hee, hope i don't offend anyone on here, if there's an obgyn on here, I'm not talking about them, I'm talking about the mainstream ones who do lots of cesareans because they don't want to be bothered on the weekend. :0
There are pee sticks that you can get over the counter at your pharmacy that let you know you are ovulating. Get the 30 day sticks. They measure LH levels, which rise before you ovulate.

do you think people are setting up these studies because they like to 'debunk' the raw food diet? i honestly think cooked food is just shit and raw food is so much better. i am attracted to raw food so i don't really give a rats ass if somebody sa...
