Give it to me Raw

I was at my local market, and I ran into an old co-worker who just happens to be vegan. I know he's been vegan for a very long time and he's an OK guy. But he asked me if I've had something done b/c I looked different. And I told him about going Raw and ending my affair w/ cigarettes. He then proceeded to say that going Raw, in the long run, is bad for you. I didn't even question him about it, b/c I pretty much assumed that this statement was ridiculous. But then after I left, I got to thinking, why would he say that, and how would he know that. I know he's pretty knowledgeable on the subject of nutrition, but at the same time, why would going raw be bad for you, EVER? His statement just confused me more than anything.

Just wondering if anyone has ever encountered this claim, and what the basis is for it??

Thanks! :)

That's interesting. Did he have any evidence to back up his claim or was it just a blanket statement?

No it was definitely a blanket statement. He didn't even act like he had evidence to back it up, that's what made me think he was spewing a bunch of B.S.

I know a vegetarian who told me raw food is bad for your body and insists she's read things on how it's bad for the pancreas, etc. I don't think I believe it because when we were created there were no ovens/stoves, etc. Look at all the people who are sick eating regular, cooked food ((hah me included )) Hmm..

Yeah but saying that when we were created there were no ovens/stoves is kind of a co-op Vegans use. We've had many many years of physical evolution since then, so the way our bodies process nutrients is far different then our great ancestors. And there have been many historical advances that suggest that prior to fire, we ate raw-meat, much like a pack of lions. That our immune systems were build differently back then,

I love being vegan and think it's a wonderful lifestyle, I just don't like that particular argument, it's not a very good one.

I think you need to bear a couple things in mind.

A.) Everyone reacts differently to different ways of eating. (AKA. Diabetics, Hypoglycemics, Lactose intolerance.)
B.) Regular visits to a doctor and/or a nutritionist are a necessity for someone eating raw-only. They can make
sure you are in fact balancing all your nutrients properly and assist you with doing so if they aren't.
C.) Do your research!! Read, read, read. But more important, make sure the sources are credible. There are
some bad things floating around in the raw/organic food industry that you might way to steer away from or
limit or intake on.

If you do those three things, you'll be perfectly healthy. Maybe he wasn't? Maybe he just wasn't balancing his diet? Who knows. My niece has been a vegan for many years now and she does those three things, and she is perfectly healthy.

I expect is is easy to do long term raw and miss out on vital nutrients. The quality of our soils are depleted in minerals so even organic produce doesn't have the levels of nutrients we would expect. That's why I believe it is important to supplement with ionic minerals to ensure health.

A lot of people think of raw as just raw vegetables and fruit and don't think of the other things that some long term raw foodist include such as bluegreen algae and some superfoods. Yes if you just ate raw lettuce, carrots and apples then you would get ill because you would be missing out on so many nutrients.

Having met a few long term raw foodists and seen the healthy glow that they have, I'm sure that with the right attitude and approach it is possible to do raw and be vibrant, happy and healthy.

Thanks Nicci and Carissa!!

I guess one would venture to make such a judgment about raw foodists if they thought all we ate were lettuce and carrot sticks. However, coming from someone who has been a long time vegan surprised me. I thought if anything, he would be more supportive than most people I encounter.
Lately, I've been experimenting w/ superfoods and foods I've never tried before. Now, my body is starting to crave these things (especially goji). And I'm feeling better for eating these foods as well. So I think w/ the addition of superfoods, you'll continue to get all the things you need, as long as your knowledgeable on nutrition and listen to what your body is telling you.

Thanks again!

Even a long time vegan might just think of eating vegetables and not fruit. You will be surprised. I know alot of vegans who dont like the idea of raw food. Its just a conditioning thing. Were not programmed to think of raw food as anything but boring lettuce salads. Peoples taste buds are over stimulated and the idea sounds awful to them so it must be unhealthy, right? Long story short, people like to share blanket statements on subjects they know nothing about based purely on what they want to be true.

I dont think superfoods are necessary personally, and I think people crave them often because they have stimulant properties and because they are not getting enough variety, and often calories, in their diet or exercise.

Eating raw can definately be healthy long term. Just as long as you're following a healthy approach to it. People who are against raw foods often have never even wanted to consider it for themselves because they enjoy the comfort and the stimulation they get from food.

Take care

Don't be surprised at people who are long-term vegansd or vegetarians saying raw is bad for you in the long-term. My aunt is a 3-year vegetarian and a huge supporter, however when I told her I was going vegan she instantly insisted I would become unhealthy if I did so. Maybe part of this is thaty she is \also a supporter of high protein diets such as Zone but she still had me listing protein sources that exsisted in a vegan diet and explaining to her how I would balance a diet that had no dairy within seconds.
She is very well-read a educated, however from her expression I could also tell that nothing would justify even a vegan diet to her never mind a raw one. She also informed me that I was to say nothjing when my mother, a 5-year vegetarian, began to eat fish again. In my aunts exact words "She needs her protein. SHe has begun to eat fish again and you will encourage her to do so." Never mind that there are many other valuabla and more absobable fomrs of protein, as well as many other sources of Omega 3's.

There are long term raw vegans who don't do super foods or supplements, like Storm Talifero and his family (www.thegardendiet.com) and Dr Doug Graham (www.foodnsport.com).

I've done a lot of research especially with the 80/10/10. I follow them all, Roger haeske, Charlie Abel, Dr. D, Tim Van Orden, the list goes on... I do feel (my body too) it truly is the ultimate raw food way to eat however as Carissa says everyone reacts differently because of genetics and our ancestry. My teeth keep getting worse and worse and I've tried it all. So, you can't have it all and your body will react so be aware of this before you plunge 100%. It's a big commitment. The transition period is quite challenging. It takes a lot of faith. I've already cause a lot of damage but I keep doing it coz it feels right. What to do ?
