Give it to me Raw

Anyone had hair turn back to its original colour on this way of eating?

Or is this one of the wild claims of the raw movement? I heard it was related to copper deficiency.

I would be grateful of any links/ personal experiences.

My exe's 8 year old was telling me about her (her grandmothers) views on health; that raw is not sufficient for health, and she used my greying hair as proof. Yes my pride is dinted a little, but I also want to know, is it a sign of a deficiency or is it genetic (or a bit of both)?

I am 32 and been raw on and off for 5 years. I was very unhealthy for almost all my former life, I wont bore you with the details. My mum begun greying at 16 however she also had/has all the same habits that predisposed my health issues.

i believe artisana makes a good one too, i believe. but its more expensive than the regular tahini and well-- youve got to make do with what youve got ;) actually, ive started making my own tahini, and i think i saw black sesames in our bulk section. i should give it a whirl. does it taste the same??

Thanks pete, for the detailed reply.

I suspect the latter for myself. I am less stressed than I've ever been, exersizing n doing nearly enough yoga... sure I could still tweak areas.

I am getting very clear messages from various sources, about needing to fast. I've just gone 'natural hygiene' 2 months ago and got more energy than ever, however I know theres old gunk in my gut somewhere causing grief.

Great that your into the live blood work. must be really fascinating. my inner scientist would love that!!

cheers Sophie

Pete was on the right track, but not quite. This was quoted directly from the New England Journal of Meidicine, "Gray hair, as most people know, is strongly associated with the natural aging process. Hair colour comes from cells located in the root of each hair and as people age the pigmentation begins to slow down. The process of going gray is genetically predetermined and this slow process stops at gray for some people but moves on to white for others. White hair basically signals that no pigment remains to colour the hair. Despite common folklore there is no evidence that stress causes gray hair."

Just to back Pete up, I did look for a possible scientific study that suggested cellular anti-aging through dietary factors is possible. Most just say that the rate at which pigmentation slows is strictly based on genetics, just like the original color of your hair is.

Is this your ex's mother? Well that would explain a lot! My daughter's father's mom said at one point it was MY fault that my daughter wasn't walking yet, it was the toys I bought her. Aeris' doctor said, "She's nuts". We laughed. And now my daughter is almost three and can use a computer. I think this is just a classic case of nasty-old-woman.

And I do have a personal experience to back all that up. My mother, went gray at 25. She grew up in the 50's/60's, so I am willing to admit her diet may have not been the best. However, my sister, who has been a vegan and a health nut since she was 15, is now 32 and gray. It's 99% related to genetics, and genetics have nothing to do with you eating bad like your mother did.

I am 18. I have a couple gray hairs, but i find that i wake up and see them all of a sudden after i've had a realllly bad/stressful week or couple days. and then i think they actually do go away or perhaps i pull them out nad they dont come back until i am really stressed again. idk. but that's been happening probably for the last two years and none of my four older siblings who all look exactly like me have had any gray hairs ( i think). I really do think stress has to do with it, no matter what the new england journal of medicine said. you cant always believe [all] scientists.

I agree. I notice more grey hairs after stress.

For your hair to suddenly be grey after a stressful situation would mean that the speed of your hair growth suddenly increased dramatically, that this increase in speed only affected a couple of hairs, and that somehow those hairs still didn't get any longer than your other non-grey hairs. That's because hair grows out grey rather than "turning grey." What is happening is that you see grey hairs when you are stressed out, probably because we tend to see negatives when we are already feeling negative (e.g. "oh great, not only I fail my finals but I have three more grey hairs!") A paragraph from intellihealth.com says the following

"...Because a hair shaft cannot change color once it has grown in (unless exposed to chemicals that change its color, a regular event at hair salons), hair cannot suddenly turn gray with or without stress."

You can read the rest at the link above.

That's pretty funny. I am not sure how much hair greying can be attributed to diet. In my family I am the only one who is barely grey. My mom, sister turned very gray in their thirties, and my dad was grey by his 40s. It's only in the past few years that I've s l o w l y started to turn grey and I'm in my 40s. My diet has been the worst of all my family and I only started eating raw - and only off and on- starting in 2006. So it's clearly not raw-related that my hair has been so slow to grey compared to the rest of my family (my sister is barely a year older). Comparing me to my family I should have turned grey a decade ago- it's become a running joke in my family about how my hair is barely grey.

Genetics must play SOME part, because I've ended up (at 25) with the same silver streak in the front of my hair that my mom had at 21 (but the rest of my head is still all dark)

I have noticed that my hair has more of a reddish tint to it now, when I was eating shit, it was a greenish/yellow. BLECH!

Greenish/yellow tint to any hair color (but especially blonde's and light browns) is due to chemicals in the water you wash your hair WITH not the ones you drink. Eating better can affect how healthy your hair is (thick, growth, etc.) but that color (take it from me, living in the city, I've had many fights with green/blonde), is from your water. If you mix a little lemon juice with your conditioner and leave it in for 10 minutes every time you condition, it would be gone in no time. Or if you use a little ketchup in your hair (vinegar & tomato processed in a blend is fine too, if you wan to be vegan about it), leave it in for 30 minutes once a week, it will also help.

I heard crimini mushrooms, they have a lot of copper which is (I think) is a pre- kind of thing for a chain of reactions that has to do with the color of your hair, if copper isn't there than the chain reaction doesn't take place.

this may be a site ti explain it, I can't the site I read it on years ago....but if copper isn't the magic bullet at least the copper will keep your skin nice!

I've been B12 deficient and gotten more gray hair. When I correct the deficiency, the gray stops coming and seems to go away (but maybe I'm just getting used to it). ;-)

Have you had your B12 level checked?

Lots of love to you,

Wendi
