Wheatgrass is good, but what about Ryegrass?

Hi all, I have been thinking about making some of my own wheatgrass recently, but I have that at the store rye berries are cheaper then wheat berries. I was wondering if anyone had ever tried juicing ryegrass and if it has the same effect as wheat grass. I also understand that rye is less modified from it's original form. So maybe it is better. I have some sprouting right now so I either need a recipe for sprouted rye, or I may just grow some grass to juice...

I've never had rye grass I'm afraid but have certainly experienced the power of wheat grass.

However, just recently I heard that you could juice ordinary grass you have on your lawn (or at least chew it and spit out the pulp) - so I tried it...

It turned out a bit frothy and a different taste from wheatgrass, but it was dark green chlorophyll rich liquid and I didn't feel any ill effects from it.

And it was free, free I tells yer!

I don't know what nutrients it has in it but it was definitely green, which I tend to believe is rather good.

I have juiced rye grass before. It is a wonderful grass. It does have different nutrient counts, which may be less in some areas then wheat grass. But then again something might be higher. I will look and see if I can find it. You might find it in one of Ann Wigmore or Victoras Kulvinskas' books on sprouting. I think Ann Wigmore chose wheatgrass, because it was highest. But she does talk about living on lawn grass and curing herself from having her legs amputated. Also she saw her grandma use grass poltices to keep soldiers from losing their legs. Barley grass and any other grass is a great source of nutrients, as are many deep leafy green weeds, herbs, and edible plants.

Spelt is the original wheat...

With five tons of SPELT harvested on the barn I have to make lots of spelt-grass..
Spelt is known to be more nutritiant than wheat, even as the original wheat... Even cooking people are reccomended to eat spelt, rye, barley, or oats - before wheat... In sproutet and grass form it might be a matter of taste, accomodity, growing condions and if it is organic... RATHER organic wheat than pesticized spelt...

Yeah, my uncle recently told me that rye and especially barley grass is better then wheat grass. As far as the grains go, I avoid both wheat and spelt because of the gluten content. I don't know if sprouted grains still contain gluten or not, but I would rather eat grains that haven't been so heavily genetically modified like wheat. I hear that wheat isn't even the same plant that it used to be in ancient times. Barley, millet, quinoa, rye, tritacale, and teff (when I can get my hands on it) are my favorites. All of these are gluten free. Gluten is like glue in your intestines and has little or no nutritional value.

aha.. Yes wheat is a modified and cultivated form of the original spelt.. the grass has no gluten at all....just green clorophyllics, (liqiud sunlight) and wood

Good to know... Thanks! I guess I need to get some unhulled barley. Sort of hard to find though...
