Give it to me Raw

Hello all :)

I'm in the process of finding my "home". I'm looking for an open-minded, creative, raw friendly, abundance of local agrictulture, hip, friendly, intelligent, athletic, community oriented place to live.

I've lived in Venice, CA for 10 years now and it's the hotbed of the raw world in the states, but i'm ready for a change. I've been in Vermont now for a month, and I'm feeling like an island here, and my food bills have tripled. I may have to head back to Venice.

So, I've begun to create a list of great communities. I would love it if people would add their thoughts and share their experiences of being raw where they are, and where they dream of being.

My List:
Asheville, NC
Davis, WV
Floyd, VA
Eugene, OR
Portland, OR
Roanoke, VA
Montpelier, VT
Brattleboro, VT
Northampton, MA
Ojai, CA
Manitou Springs, CO
Boulder, CO
Sedona, AZ
Chicago, IL

big hugs and many thanks :)
Tim

those r great links John! I listed the 1st one on this same post earlier along with another one that u might be interested in for finding intentional communities around the globe.
All this info is fantastic, everyone's got such great suggestions, I'm putting push pins on my map to check some of these out myself!

You've never been out of the U.S. Tim, really? Is that still the case? Come to Europe for a visit you will love it. :)
I just spotted the fact that this discussion was started over a year ago now. How have your plans developed since?
I feel the only way to find a great new home is through travel, exploring different places, meeting the people, making the connections etc...It's exciting!

Well England (where I live at the moment) I would maybe recommend for a visit but not to live long term. You get everything you need here to live raw successfully and we have nice raw communities in certain places, but it's very expensive. And it's too grey most of the time..... I'm sure this was obvious to everyone ;)
East Sussex probably does get the more sun compared to the rest of the country, but still no where neeeear enough.

My plan is to move over to Spain sometime by the end of this year. At the moment I think I'll be settling on the balearics. Mallorca or maybe Ibiza or Formentere. I want to live quiet rural and grow loads of my own food but also be close enough to town, most likely Palma (the main city) to be able to work as well. Spanish food produce is very nice, not always certified organic but grown fairly pure in most parts as far as I understand it.
The climate there is heaven and so healing I found.
It would be amazing to join together with some like minded raw friends to set something up over there. My sister will be there and some other friends of mine but non of them are particularly raw.....well yet anyway!! ;)

Mica :)

I've been to Montreal in the time since I've posted this lol
That's 40 miles outside of the U.S. lol

I'm still in VT... More unhappy than ever... A change is coming... I can feel it :)

Europe would be wonderful :)

The Pacific Northwest -

Ok, it has a bad rep for being too rainy. I grew up in north central oregon between lush, wet, and green western oregon and the dry, arid eastern oregon so I really got the best of both worlds - a little bit of rain, and little bit of snow (sometimes a lot of snow), and dry, hot, sunny summers and lots of GREEN.

Hood River (located in the Columbia River Gorge) is a little paradise away from the metropolis of the big city - Portland. It's considered the "windsurfing capital of the world", but it has an array of outdoor sports aside from windsurfing and water sports - hiking, cycling, mountain climbing, rock climbing, snowboarding, skiing (even in the summer - mountain is open year-round), etcccccc, etc, etc. It's beautiful. Chalk full of health-conscious, athletic people. I haven't lived there in over five years (I am in Los Angeles - headed to Living Light Culinary institute at the end of Feb, then either up to Oregon, out to St. Louis, MO or Boston, MA for the summer before I return to the PNW. Bye-bye LA/smog/traffic/people/blegh)

I plan to open a vegan food stand at the local farmer's market (where ever I end up - but I imagine it in Hood River) with juices and smoothies made on site. Then eventually a vegan music lounge.

You could help me open it if you'd like!

Let me bestow upon you some lovely photos from my hometown, Hood River, Oregon (an hour east of Portland):

Australia is going raw crazy at the moment.. and if you come to Melbourne you'll find a Living Food Co-Operative ( livingfoodcoop@gmail.com & http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1005695401&ref=ts ) and an ever growing raw food meetup group. Not to mention some seriously cool culture / music / architecture scenes to rival NYC/SF .. oh and there's bay and surf beaches, national parks and ski fields all within an hour or two's drive...
Enough of a tourist brochure for ya?! .. But damn it if we ain't missing a raw food cafe/restaurant..

Hi Tim,
I love your videos and have referred many to them for inspiration. Come to Seattle and we'll make a video together! I'm afraid I can't recommend it as a place to live though. It's true there is a great community here and also in Portland; I guess I rather take it for granted. But the most important thing to consider is climate, and the growing season here is much too short and it is too cold to support human life naturally, even in Portland. Eugene is an improvement but not much. I'm with you on the negatives of So Cal, like population density, etc., but I'm looking at areas within 100 miles in any direction of the Bay Area, especially east and north. I've been hearing how bad the California economy is and wasn't too worried about it but it seems to be the first thing people talk about so it must really be in the tank. I've heard the state is issuing IOUs instead of refund checks for those who overpaid their state income tax!
Best wishes wherever you end up,
Nora

We're strongly considering CA for our settling spot after our cross-country tour. I've been hearing more and more about potential CA water shortages/problems in the future, though (not only for California, but for other states as well). We want a place that's truly suitable for living naturally, year-round, with a lot of land around us.

I love this thread because people are always sharing what they know about specific places, and what's great and not so great about each location.

Thanks for sharing, everyone!

Lots of love to all of you,

Wendi

It's actually surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it. No machete required. Shave off the husk at the pointed top close to the shell. Then poke the point of a knife in about 2 or 3 cm out from the centre and wiggle it about until it pierces ...
