Give it to me Raw

Hi all,

I am new, so perhaps this question has already been addressed, but I will ask anyway just in case.

I tried the raw food diet a few months ago and I loved it, but at the same time I could not cope with the hunger pangs and always feeling hungry. I am going to try to give it a go again, but am worried about this. What are ways I can avoid hunger pangs even while I am eating something all day long? I am a relatively small person, I don't usually eat very much to begin with and have been vegetarian for over 7 years, but for some reason on this diet I was always hungry.

Does this happen alot? Perhaps its just something one's body has to adjust to?

Thanks for any insight!

excitotoxins!!!! I swear by it! almost every cooked or packaged food has excitotoxins in them. you could prep and cook the most wholesome veggie burger from scratch, nothing canned, truly from scratch but them you add musturd or something small and there is the words "SPICES" in small print....even a small amount will go in your body and start talking to your mind! I can tell if something has a LOT of exicitotoxins in it just from how I feel after I eat. years ago I'd eat at Chipotle a lot (which should have told me something in it self) but I could eat one of their huge veggie bowls and shortly after my brains talking about food again! if you ever eat something and you're just in awe of the taste, unless you just unpeeled an orange or cut up some celery, there's something in the food that has made it beyound your blood-brain barrier and now it tweeking your nerons to die. MSG and aspertame is the most well known of the excitotoxin, but the word spice is just a powerful and bad for you. DRUGS IN THE FOOD all you have to do is wait it out. if you can get beyond your mind telling you to eat, the addictions will go away and you'll feel fine. even better than fine but free and your mind will be quiet. observe yourself.... EXCITOTOXINS THE TASTE THAT KILLS is a great book!

yikes...that's creepy. I know about the whole "natural flavors" thing, but not "spices". I will look into that a little further and check out the book. Thanks! i guess the best thing is to keep on trying. I am about to go make a green smoothie and see how I like it. exciting!!

I can honestly say I've never had that problem, maybe you arent...I don't want to say 'doing it right' but that's really all I can think of in response to that.

I highly recommend Natalia Rose's book 'The Raw Food Detox Diet' it will help you transition your diet properly, educate you on what you're doing and how you're doing it, and hopefully squelch any and all hunger pains/problems you encounter.

I know...I haven't read about many people going through this, but maybe this time around it wont be as bad. I have cut down on how much food I intake in general anyway, and I have cut out a lot of processed foods that I used to eat, including tofu and soy milk, etc. Thanks, I will check out the book :)

I actually have that book and i LOVE it...the only problems i found with it were that some of the recipes became a bit pricey for me after a while and the time required for most recipes was a little too much for me. It was fun to make some over the weekend though and enjoy the food throughout the week. I think I will mainly eat salads and smoothies and see where the course takes me :) thanks for your help!

You're welcome, I didn't mean for you to follow that book to a 'T' because it can be pricey and difficult, but that knowledge can help you prepare yourself for how to eat correctly so you aren't always hungry. I have honestly never had that problem. I did before I really educated myself on everything though. But not since.

Hi LilyLoo,
So...what are you eating? I feel like by looking at your current diet, we can help you begin to figure out why you are always feeling hungry. What does a typical day look like?

Well, today is really my first day back on it. I tried it a few months ago, but I can't remember exactly what I was eating.

Today I have started off with a green smoothie which I added, mixed greens, spinach, kale, apple, banana, pineapple and a teaspoon of agave nectar. I love it, but I am still feeling a little hungry. Granted, I have not yet finished it all and I made enough to fill the blender (5 cups/40 oz). I also am not quite sure how much to drink, but I guess I can keep going until I feel satisfied :) For lunch I plan to have a small bowl of lentils, which are not raw, but are homemade and very unprocessed. I bought some dates and clementines that I plan to eat as a snack if I get hungry later in the day, and for dinner I will most likely have a salad with avocado and tomato. Not sure which dressing I will use yet. Also, I am going to try to drink plenty of water.

Hopefully soon I will have time to make some recipes from my raw books.

What do you think? Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch :)

So...I feel like the next thing I would do is check in with what you actually end up eating for the day- like do you stick to the plan, or eat different things. And then I would notice throughout the day what your hunger levels are, when you feel the hunger pangs, how you ate the food, (alone or with other people, did you chew, eat mindfully, did you eat quickly, how you felt physicaly and emotionally before, during and after eating, and anything else you notice).

This may seem like a lot to pay attention to, and I think it's the way to really see what you personally need to eat to nourish yourself. When I have been uncertain about whether my diet is working for me, I keep a food journal, with this kind of information for a few days. And by doing this I always discover something useful.

Also, I'm not sure how you are deciding what amounts of food to eat. Personally, I make a green smoothie most mornings in my Vitamix that is about a quart and a half in volume. Some days I drink the whole thing within a half an hour, and some days it lasts until the next day. I pretty much eat until I have a feeling of fullness. And depending on how I am feeling that day, I add different ingredients to the smoothie. For example, if I'm feeling pretty hungry I'll use hemp seeds or nut milk- and if not maybe just water.

There are so many different theories and ideas about what to eat, how much to eat, when to eat...I find it to be a confusing if I get too wrapped up in all of the information. What works for me is this inquiry process. I hope something in all of this is useful.

Yes very useful..many thanks :) I have decided I should also listen to my body, as you do. Yesterday I think I was just thinking way too much about food and when to eat and what I had to eat and what I couldn't eat and ahhhhh it was just too much! Too much thinking about food led me to being hungry I guess. Today I am going to slowly enjoy my green smoothie and drink lots of water and await the delicious salad i have waiting for me at lunch. One thing at a time :) Thanks so much!

Depends on what you are eating and how long you have been raw. My experience is that if I eat a lot of straight up high fiber foods like a veggie platter, then the fiber scratches and sweeps out my stomach making me think I'm hungry, when it's just the movement. That's why I opt for smoothies. Well not entirely true, I do veggies too but smoothies will definitely fill you up to the point that you feel like you had a thanksgiving dinner. And for hours too! Good luck!

True, I have just started again today. I tried it a few months back but it didn't work out for me. I needed more time to prepare and research, which I am still doing today. I am currently drinking a green smoothie too, so we will see how that works. What do you put in your green smoothies?
