Give it to me Raw

Hey all-
Does anyone know anything about food and nutrition for dogs? My 7-year- old retriever mix has a bad skin infection and hips that are getting worse by the day. He has been put on antibiotics and just seems to be getting sicker. Any advice?

Thanks!
Amie

Hi Amie - Here are a couple links that should help:

1) http://www.azmira.com/ (Holistic Health Care - product information)

2) http://www.azmiragreatland.com/ (Distributor where you can purchase online)

I feed my two dogs (both 11 years old now) Azmira ... truly one of the most nutritional dog foods available. And a reasonable price considering the quality of the product. They're full of energy, healthy and act like young dogs.

I wish the very best for your dog and hope he recovers soon! Good luck : )

We were not yet into the raw lifestyle when we had our dog. However, she seemed to do better near the end of her life when we stopped feeding her commercial dog food and just gave her table scraps. I've since learned about some of the awful things that go into pet food (and I'm not even counting contaminants like melamine)... no wonder she never really liked kibble!

If I ever have another dog, it'll be fed a raw diet. After all, if there's anything more unnatural than a human eating a cooked diet, it's a dog eating a cooked diet.

As far as the hips go, have you looked into glucosamine? I think that's supposed to help with hip problems somewhat. Keep in mind, though, that some dogs just have bad hips. I'm not sure that there's a heck of a lot you can do, especially as they start to get old.

My dog had similar problems plus a pancreatic disorder, she now eats raw foods and is very healthy. Just google "raw pet food" or holistic pet and you'll get tons of info. I get a prepackaged frozen variety from my vet- who is a holistic pet care specialist thank goodness, so i am lucky. Depending on where you live you may want to look up a vt that practices holistic pet treatment.
Good luck. :)~

Brian Clement recommends giving your dog (or cat) some wheatgrass every day.

"Also in Ann Wigmore's animal book she mentions several dogs being healed from illness with wheatgrass. She states that if they throw up after they drink it, they are getting rid of the toxins in their bodies."

Interesting... but expensive. Our dog used to have stomach problems. Her stomach would gurgle away and we'd know that, on those days, she'd be off her food. Often, she would go into the backyard, eat a bunch of grass, and then throw up. Dogs often know instinctively what to do. I guess the wheatgrass solution would be good if you lived in an apartment or something. But dogs can get the purging effect from regular grass, too... and it's a lot cheaper! :)

my kitty was a stray and a little rough around the edges when I fiirst got her. I feed her Nature's Variety with greens, nutritional flakes, dulse, and I try to cycle through other supplements/superfoods. Her coat is super silky and smooth. She's totally a picture of health.

As far as nutritional supplements, send me a message and I can help you with treatment info.

xoxo

Hey, has anybody here tried feeding their pets meat scraps from the local butcher? This seems like the most natural diet to me, as dogs and cats eat raw meat in the wild. Plus, you could probably score scrap meat for free from the local butcher! I am just about to get a dog, and I would like to feed them meat scraps, and some occasional wheatgrass. Just wondering if anybody has tried this recently...

I had to eat less raw/cold food (I know- not what people want to hear, LOL!) and take Chinese herbs to strengthen the spleen.
