I try to avoid fruit and fat together in general, though I don't think almond milk has enough fats to really interfere with the banana. If you poured some oil into that smoothie it would be a different story! You might have to have really strong digestion to tolderate that combo - I'm not one of them :) I dont eat grains or dairy, though I've read grains should be eaten with veggies, and not with fruits like berries, citrus fruits and tomatoes.
I've done the food combining thing in the past, and the only thing I ever noticed was that animal protein plus sweets (fruit or other sugars) caused huge digestion problems.
As far as eating raw goes, I don't bother with food combining. I tend to have fats in all my smoothies, sweet or not. I haven't had a problem with digesting those, and they keep me going for a longer period of time. Mind you, I'm not sure if I'm putting that much fat in, relatively speaking. A few nuts or some seed oil isn't like throwing half a cup of lard in with your banana.
If a gorilla was eating leaves in the jungle, and then came across some fruits or some ants, he wouldn't say, "Oops... can't eat that for a few hours... it's not proper food combining." Would he?

hey bueller. i'm finding doing some basic food combining is helpful for my digestion. natalia rose does a great job of explaining all the do's and don'ts which i've found helpful. in general, veggies should be combined with protein OR starch (but not both) and fruit should be eaten alone. almond milk is considered "neutral" and can happily be combined with bananas and avocados - i find i have no problem with throwing some berries into my smoothie as well. like Raw By Default, i also add fats to my smoothies with no problem. it took me a while to start figuring it all out, but now i find i'm food combining fairly naturally since it makes sense to my body.
i agree, natalia rose's suggestions have made the most sense to me and i have found them helpful. also if you are still including some cooked foods in your diet, she has some great tips for combining those well too.
I don't follow many food combining rules, but not because I'm against them - lately I'm not following any because I don't feel like it, LOL, and with this cold weather I figure that I'll combine things any way I want! It is hard to want those delicious, cool smoothies when I've got goosebumps, sometimes, even though they are one of my faves.
When it comes to the "fruit alone" rule, the green smoothie craze is debunking the idea that greens are incompatible with fruits. They do seem to behave differently than other veggies, just like even food combiners will say that apple and celery (used as a green by smoothie folks) seem to be an exception to the fruit-alone rule. Avocado is technically a fruit AND a fat, and is often put in green smoothies.
As for the fat....Frederick Patenaude url'd me to a page that explained how it isn't sugar that makes it hard to recover from candida as much as it is fats. It was an interesting little biochemical pathway that was described. I hope I saved it in a document somewhere! (Now to find it, lol...) It was part of his pro-green-smoothie case. He promotes Victoria Boutenko's Green for Life book and an associated educational program. (For the price, I wonder what is in it that could possibly be worth that much money....)
So, if having almond-banana smoothies bring back candida symptoms, then I'd say they are a no-no. If the combination doesn't have a negative effect on you, then have them. On the other hand, if you are on a quest for ultimate health, people like Tonya Zavasta have found that they've reached new levels of raw food health by letting go of lots of fats as well as reducing her calories. She doesn't advocate this until you have been raw for quite a while, though. Loved her book "Quantum Eating," though I'm not ready to take it to that level yet. It's different from most raw books, I love how her mind works. And Victoria Boutenko. They've got these detailed, scholarly-yet-doggedly-practical Russian minds and hunt down information like bloodhounds.
Thank you Rawsome. I read about Patenaude and his theory on fat and candida. It was fascinating. Here is the link, in case anyone else would like it, http://www.fredericpatenaude.com/purehealth/050305.html#article, I will put it on my blog. I think there may be something to it's contributions for sure. However I was a fruitarian for awhile because I was following Drie's Cancer Diet and my body wasn't alkalizing which didn't make any sense so I knew that with Candida the sugar from the fruit was the cause. Once I cut out fruit and switched to greens it balanced in a few days. So it's hard to say. Maybe it's different for everyone. Apples and citrus don't seem to be problem. I have for the moment stopped eating banana's for the very reasons you say in that it has bothered me a bit however after a few months I know I will want to try them again and I'm glad to hear that my banana / almond milk shake seems acceptable to food combining. I love it so much. I love Green for Life it's great. I have not read Victoria's book but being a science major myself that sounds interesting more to read than to try. Thanks for all the info. This is great!
Hello bueller.....i always use bananas in everything, i wonder if i should cut them out for awhile. But what would i use as an alternate to get the smoothness and that fulfilled feeling?
thanks
