Give it to me Raw

Both of these books, by author Eckhart Tolle, are must reads.

Two years ago a raw food magazine interviewed me and asked me what my top 3 raw food books here. My first pick was The Power of Now. And although it has nothing to do with raw food specifically, it has everything to do with everything.

To make real magic happen in life, we first have to live in the present moment. And to get to that place, it's important that we go beyond our condition and stories.

One of the biggest reasons people don't do what they know is good for them is because their stories get in the way. Stories that are based on past experiences.

When I first read The Power of Now, I finally had an opportunity to understand why I was so identified with my ego. Since then (it's been 3 years) my thoughts have been reduced by at least 40% to 50%. How am I measuring that? I measure the level of thoughts I'm having with the amount of worry I carry. I've noticed that since I started watching my thoughts and noticing when I'm not in the present moment, that I've been able to slowly rid of my thoughts. It's the greatest gift I've ever been given.

This is more me sharing my enthusiasm for Eckhart's work and also encouraging you to check it out if you haven't.

With Purpose,
Dhrumil

This is awful, I know, but I have had a copy of "The Power Of Now" for a couple years and never read it. Don't get me wrong, I love to read, and have read countless other books since purchasing that one. Don't really know why I never read it... it's not like me to have a book in my collection that I haven't read. I keep hearing about how wonderful that book is, everywhere I turn I hear about how it's changed the way people think and view life. I think you finally just inspired me to pick it up and read it. I'm sure in another week or so, I'll really be thanking you :-)

Hey Candy, maybe you can try an audio book version! : )

His audio books are great . I love to listen to his voice. It is almost half the experience for me, to associate his voice with it. I love to have it on in my car so whenever I go somewhere alone I can listen.

Thanks Dhrumil, I might try that with the next book :-)

Pete, I can't agree more. There have been so many times in my life where a book helped me through a tough time, and even, at times, helped me to see things more clearly. And not just self-help books either, a lot of fictions, in the story, or the moral of it in the end.

Last night, before going to sleep, I picked up "The Power Of Now" again, and remembered why I didn't get past the first couple of chapters before... it didn't make any sense to me... THEN. I remember certain parts that I read a couple years ago that sounded like meaningless chatter, and I remember thinking that this was only for people who wanted to play pretend enlightenment. Kind of like how you see some people in an art gallery talking about how "amazing" some painting is, and the meaning behind it, only to find out later that it was drawn my a 3 year old. And now, of course, it all makes perfect sense. I simply wasn't ready to fully receive the message at that time.

I'm reminded of Buddhist Rev. Heng Sure's speech from the 2004 VegSource Healthy Lifestyle Expo. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7621151971682965667
In it he talks about how sometimes eating meat may affect your ability to meditate because of all the "noise" in your head. At the time that I purchased this book and tried to read it the first time, I was still very much a "meat and potatoes girl." Makes me think, maybe there is something to it, at least for me.

I haven't read ANE, but I read the Power of Now a few years ago when I was going through a divorce long in the making (as most are). I don't remember if it was referred to me, or why I picked it up, but the timing could not have been better for me. I needed the guidance, but I was also at a place where all things seemed possible, and so had a more open mind than at any time before. Looking forward to reading ANE.

Dhru,

I've been in the doldrums regarding reading spiritual books for a while except for the Tao Te Ching, which I read on a regular basis. Tolle's books just kept showing up for me in the past year or so and finally your post tipped the scales into my consciousness. I bought the books and started reading. The only challenge I have now is shutting GITMR and this computer down early enough in the evening to settle into reading. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm!

I had the opportunity to meet Eckhart Tolle in person somewhere around the year 2000 in New York City, way back when he was a little less than well known on the world stage. I was blown away by the quality of his presence. As soon as I entered the room, I felt a dramatic quieting of my mind and senses. There was a stillness within that was revealed to me that I knew I had within me, but just had not experienced so profoundly. Since that day, I have been a huge fan of his.

If you have not had a chance to hear recordings or seeing videos of his talks, give yourself the gift of doing so. There is something that comes across in those recordings and videos that is not captured in his books. I went through a period of listening to his recorded lectures first thing in the morning when I awoke before my asana practice and right before I went to sleep at night. I did this for about 2 months and it forever changed my life.

What we are looking for in this life is to experience our "true" selves.... the transcendental essence of who we really are.... not just the superficial aspects of ourselves. This part of ourselves is the original source of real peace, joy and happiness. Essentially, it is part of the essence of all things, both seen and unseen. Eckhart Tolle, more than many other teachers I have encountered embodies this kind of presence, this kind of experience. He is truly a blessing from the Divine Itself.

Great Love and Respect...!!!

I started reading A New Earth last night, it's incredible. I had the most creative dreams, and I'm glad I had this to read, I was unsettled and in disarray when I went to bed.

Eckhart Tolle
as interpreted by June as
ONENESS AND EQUALITY AS ALL LIFE

Make the present moment into your friend not your enemy
YOU ARE THE PRESENT MOMENT

To meet everything and everyone through stillness instead of
mental noise is the greatest gift you can offer to the universe.

YOU ARE EVERYTHING. YOU ARE STILLNESS.
YOU ARE MENTAL NOISE. YOU ARE THE GIFT.
YOU ARE THE UNIVERSE. MAKE USE OF YOURSELF
ACCORDING TO WHAT REALITY YOU WANT MANIFEST.

Trying to find yourself through things doesn’t work…the ego satisfaction
is short-lived so you keep looking for more, keep buying, keep consuming

YOU ARE THE THINGS THAT DOES WORK. YOU ARE THE
THINGS THAT DOESN’T WORK. YOU ARE THE EGO. YOU ARE SATISFACTION. YOU ARE “BUYING AND NOT BUYING”.
YOU ARE “CONSUMING AND NOT CONSUMING”.
MAKE USE OF YOURSELF ACCORDING TO WHAT REALITY YOU WANT MANIFEST FOR THE GOOD OF YOU AS ALL.

The longing for love that is in every child, is the longing to be recognized
not on the level of form but on the level of being.

YOU ARE LOVE. YOU ARE THE CHILD. YOU ARE “LONGING”.
YOU ARE RECOGNITION. YOU ARE FORM. YOU ARE BEING.
YOU ARE THE MANIFESTED REALITY. YOU ARE ALL.

When you don’t cover up the world with words and labels, a sense of
the miraculous returns to your life.
YOU ARE THE COVER UP. YOU ARE THE WORLD. YOU ARE THE LABELS AND WORDS YOU USE. YOU ARE MIRACULOUS. YOU ARE LIFE.

When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself
YOU ARE INNER STILLNESS. YOU ARE “IN TOUCH AND LOSING TOUCH”
YOU ARE ALL.

I have little use for the past and rarely talk about it
YOU ARE THE PRESENT. YOU ARE THE PAST. YOU ARE
“TALKING ABOUT IT AND NOT TALKING ABOUT IT”.
YOU ARE HERE.

Compassion is the awareness of a deep bond between yourself and
all creatures.
YOU ARE “COMPASSION AND NON-COMPASSION”. YOU ARE
ALL CREATURES. MAKE USE OF YOURSELF FOR THE GOOD
OF YOU AS ALL.

The ego tends to equate having with Being. I have therefore I am.
and the more I have the more I am.
YOU ARE HAVING. YOU ARE BEING. YOU ARE ALL.
MAKE USE OF YOURSELF FOR THE GOOD OF YOU AS ALL.

The ego lives through comparison. How you are seen by others
turns into how you see yourself.
YOU ARE YOU. YOU ARE OTHERS. YOU ARE ALL.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU SEE AND YOU ARE WHAT OTHERS SEE

Are you resisting your here and now right now?
YOU ARE “RESISTING AND NON-RESISTING”. YOU ARE HERE.
YOU ARE NOW. YOU ARE ALL LIFE.

Attachment to things drops away by itself when you no longer seek to
find yourself in them.
YOU ARE ATTACHMENT AND NON-ATTACHMENT. YOU
ARE “SEEKING AND NON-SEEKING”.YOU ARE THINGS YOU SEEK.
YOU ARE ALL.

Nothing exists outside this present moment.
YOU ARE THE PRESENT MOMENT, YOU ARE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE.
YOU ARE ALL.

Wow, thank you, this is very beautiful and very powerful. I am reading A New Earth now. I am taking my time and really letting these truths sink in. I have already set the ball in motion for great change in my life. One of those changes was to eat raw fruits and vegetables. there are many more changes in the works and even more on the way. I am thinking differently today than I was yesterday. I can forgive myself and let go of all past hurts and wrongs. I am right now. I like it. Thanks again, be blissed love La
