Berries are great (Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries) !!
But they're rarely available in organic form during this winter season and I love to add them to my green smoothies (to give it a little flavor and for the antioxidants for the kids). So...is it cool to add frozen berries to your smoothie? Are they seriously devoid of nutrients because of the freezing process or are they still pretty good to have?
I'm sure you're going to get several different responses from this question. First I'd say do what YOU feel is best for you. Ideally you wouldn't want to eat all bagged/frozen fruits & veggies, but you can make exceptions when fresh isn't available. I tend to eat all Fresh fruit, but I will make an exception such as frozen cherries for a cherry cheesecake or frozen mangos since I can't seem to get mangos when they're perfectly ripe.
I know that organic is better, but I'm not always able to buy it. I'm not losing any sleep over it because it's a lot better than eating SAD like I used to. :-)
I just read something about frozen possibly being more nutritious then some fresh fruit due to the nutrients being diminished through shipping and long storage.
"There is still so much that we dont know about our food."
Exactly! Everything is still an evolving process. Ultimately it's really about tuning in and listening to our bodies. Instead of reaching for information outside of us to tell us what we "should" eat.
I agree with Lisha here. Feel out your intuition! I have heard that some brands pasteurize there frozen products. I don't want to sound discouraging. This may be true for some brands but I am not really sure if all do it. I personally would use them if they vibed with me! : )
In the summer I try to go to a local farm and buy a bunch for cheap. Wash them off and then freeze them! They can make the best treat ever on a hot summer day!
I always feel out my intuition. I can't wait until the summer. BANANA ICE CREAM!!! : )
OK so they may not be quite as good as fresh organic (from your garden!) but they're still pretty damn good and as you say much better than the SAD regime.
They still taste great and still have lots of colour (which is where the antioxidants lie) so why not!
I so agree. MmMm I Love me some organic bananas. I barely touched veggies or fruit before I went Raw. Now I absolutely Love the stuff! We do the best we can with what we have. I always bless my food and put Love into it as I prepare it.
Such a toss-up for me. I personally prefer raw as my body just likes it better, as for the nutritional benefit- I truly don't know, I don't really trust frozen foods. But then again if they can freeze sperm and eggs and create human life from that later on... then shouldn't a frozen blueberry be harmless? Tough one... still not sure where I stand, too many conflicting viewpoints.
i will get ripe bananas and freeze them for ice cream, and in my local farm shop i buy frozen berries. They are not pasteurized, just simply frozen. I will also freeze things like ginger, dates and pies.
I dont think it depleats too many nutriants, 1 or 2 perhaps! Im not too bothered, because 98% of my diet is fresh, so im sure a tiny amount of nutriant loss isnt going to make too much difference!
That sounds like fun.. There is a thing called double dutch where two girls hold two ropes and you have to jump them both at the same time.. maybe you could find a couple of girls to try this with you. It's pretty impressive when you see it..
