Give it to me Raw

Alicia A.

Raw Food for Mental Health? (Depression, Bipolar, Anxiety, Ect, Ect)?

Who's had some success in treating mental illness with raw food and what have you found helpful? (or what have you heard is helpful, if you're not mentally ill or don't want to out yourself as such?) My little brother, besides having some serious lymph node issues, suffers from Bipolar II (many other family members do as well), depression, and anxiety. I'm hopeful a more-raw diet will help his lymph condition but anyone got suggestions for complimentary dietary treatments to go along with his therapy and meds (which he'd eventually like to get off of I think) for his mental health too?

Thanks!

Also, speculation on why you think whatever it is works, works? I'm just curious.

I gave him a book on meditation, body scanning, and gentle yoga (Full Catastrophe Living, specifically) the last time I was home, to see him before a surgery. Mom tells me he's been reading it...

I would just ask, does he want help? Is he asking what he can do?

I for one have been able to get off and stay off antidepressants (after being on 13 years) through nutrition and raw food. It was my desire and searching long and hard for answers that made it possible. If someone else would have tried to tell me, without me being committed to getting off, it never would have worked, because its a multitude of factors in synergy with each other. Not as simple as just "raw food">

I hope he finds healing for what he's looking for.

Yeah, he is. I don't know if he'll actually DO anything, but...well, you can't make someone do something they're determined not to do. You can just keep offering them help when they ask for it and hope they eventually take it, right. He's really getting a double whammy right now, poor kid.

Thanks.

He likes veggies.

He also likes junk, but I hope if I can encourage him to stick to a healthier lifestyle his tastes will change. Mine did.

E3-live seems to have some very good brainstuff in it, passing the blood/brain barrier. I think I heard Hippocrates saying that.
Maybe you can google on it. Other blue-green algae (spirulina) I am not sure about.

I bet I could get him to take a supplement like E3.

He's interested in some complimentary therapy, but I'm not sure I can get him to jump onto the raw bandwagon all at once.

Is why I went back to it and am really trying to stick to it now. I'm hoping if he sees how great it makes me feel and how I don't waste away (my mom worries I have an eating disorder, which I don't--I understand why she worries, though, she did), maybe he'll give it a shot. He follows my example pretty often....

Yes! On SAD I am suicidal, have panic attacks, massively insecure. On raw I feel amazing, I feel invincible, incredibly happy (often euphoric!) and I love myself!

But only if I am 100%, fasting has helped me stick to raw, I have been yoyoing for an entire year but I just did a two day dry fast and I ate some cooked food (didn't want any but I was in a social sitch and didn't want my friends to worry because I was not eating) and it tasted shit, so I ate more and more - trying to find the good taste but it was gone. And now I haven't had cravings in 4 days, I usually have them on the 1st day and by the morning of day 3 they are so intense I have to eat some cooked food. But not this time around.

So yes raw is awesome for mental disorders, and fasting is a great way to get into raw coz why would you crave food that doesn't taste good!? What is there to want!

Good luck, I hope he does get better even if he decides to not go raw, its great that you are so caring and want to help him.

I love him very much--if I could take his problems onto myself to heal them, I would. I can't. :( But thanks for the suggestions, perhaps I will suggest to him a fast. Maybe I can have him come visit me for one, or next year when I am working and making real adult money I can send him out to Living Tree or Hippocrates or Kripalu....

Thanks!

How old is he?

18.

He'll be 19 in may.

He's ten years younger than me. I half raised him. And his twin. Who oddly doesn't have ANY of his issues. It's so odd how that happens...they're identical too.

I know first hand that the following supplements can do wonders for mental health: hi-potency (usually this means 100mcg or so) B vitamin complex, broad spectrum trace minerals (zinc is especially critical here) and 1000mg. fish oil capsules. All 3 types should be taken daily (follow each label for actual recommended dosage) for a month and then decide if it helps. Don't expect results in first few weeks... It's important to take daily and consistently for at least a month. Everyone I know who has done this right has seen results. Sometimes amazing results.

Raw foods and exercise (google "exercise" + "depression".....very strong benefit/correlation) can help greatly of course, but I believe in helping someone feel better fast, first. When they start to see how nutrients and other lifestyle changes can improve their problems, they often begin to realize just how important their choices are. It can be like opening a door in their understanding. When they start feeling better ease into short discussions about raw food and other healthier choices.

Anyway that's my experience. Hope it helps.

Yes, yes, and yes.

thanks for narrowing it down, tele. I didn't know where to start. I've tried so many things I sometimes forget which end is up, but all the things you've mentioned have been big ones in my healing too.

Thanks

What we believe is what we believe. The Essene Gop says exactly what I would say and what should be said. So to me they are the best scripture out there. I like other religious writings as well and think they are valuable tools in teaching morals bu…
