Something happened to me while I as away from the warmth of understanding GI2MRers that made me realise how we are totaly in charge of our own health
My sister got diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovaries syndrome) so I got tested (it runs in families) and it just reminded me how incredibly frustating drs and medical science are. I asked my GP for a blood test and this is how it panned out:
me: i want to be tested for pcos
dr: what makes you think you have pcos?
me: well....my sister's just been diagnosed with it and I just want to rule it out.
dr: what about symptoms?
me: well, you have treated me for acne since i was 12, i am on the hairier side o normal [but apparently because i wax this means i don't have the symptom]
dr: and your periods?
me: irregular and painful
dr: and what about your weight?
me: erm, well, you can see i've always been overweight, however, EVERYTHING I've read about pcos the biggest factor that eases or helps symptoms is diet and exercise and it would make prfect sense that my symptoms are less dramatic than my sister's as I have ALWAYS exercised in some form and have always been interested in healt
dr: i see
me: Look, I never come to the drs, I am not looking to get any drugs from you, I don't wish to take the oral contraceptive or any other hormone for this, i just want to know if i have pcos or not so i can manage the symptoms naturally...
The dr was so condescending he made me feel like i was a hyperchondriac, nevermind the fact he'd missed the diagnosis for the last 10 years or so!!
It shouldn't surprise me really but it did. Surely drs should be commending peple who are actively taking a NATURAL interest in their own health??
As a side line - anyone have any specific PCOS pointers? As far as i can gather, just choosing to be raw will have a huge affect on most of the symptoms anyway.
