He might want to try some of the raw protein powders, like Thor's raw protein powder, or hemp protein. I think there's a raw body building group on this site, he might want to check that group out for tips!! :)

That reminds me - he may like this book:

The guy who wrote it., Brendan Braizer, is a vegan raw foodist who is a professional athlete. I read that Simon Whitfield (an Olympic triathlon gold medalist ) apparently follows his plan. Brenda invented Vega, if you've ever heard of that. it's a raw vegan protein supplement made out of hemp, sprouts, maca... all sorts of good stuff.

Vega powder isn't raw. The Vega bars are though.

Actually, I contacted the company and they told me it is raw, save for the Maca.

Yellow pea protein and brown rice protein cannot be raw. There are also many other things in it that are definitely not considered a raw product (xanthan gum, mized berry complex, cocoa powder in the chocolate flavor etc.) They don't advertise it as being raw on the container, and I think that marketing it as a raw product is a bit misleading. They haven't marketed it as a raw product but it seems to have been adopted as one.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great stuff and the healthiest, most complete meal replacement out there. But it's just that, a replacement. Nothing is better than fresh organic whole foods in their original state. I'm sure even Brendan Brazier would agree with that.

It was a main recovery calorie source of mine for a over a year and I felt very good while taking it. Vega/Sequel Naturals is one of our cycling club sponsors so I have tons of the stuff.

Hey sorry to jump in. I have read Brendan Braizers book and if you could elborate on why cant yellow pea protein and (it should be wild rice, not just brown) brown rice be raw. I am currently trying to make my own version of protein supplement. I sprout the yellow peas from Mumms seeds and add sprouted quinowa (sorry spelling is not me). Then grind my own hemp hearts. add banna and soaked dates for taste. mix in food processor. Any thoughts RAWKev? Still waiting to see if I can get wild rice to sprout.

there is no food that builds muscle, one has to do the work, strenghth training, yes, the fastest way is high weight and make sure you are eating enough fruit read the 80-10-10 diet at http://www.foodnsport.com/?a_aid=6b4adff0, forget about anything that isnt fresh rip raw whole organic fruits and tender plant shoots that means no protien powder which is empty calories

Back on topic... The best way to gain weight in lean muscle mass and bone (the only desirable kind) is by resistance training. Regular weight lifting, bodyweight exercises and some cardio thrown in for good measure will yield a gain in muscle weight. If you were previously inactive and begin a weight training routine than it may take some time before you gain weight as you will be burning fat as well as gaining muscle. Just make sure you eat sufficient calories and a good variety of foods. Diet wise I think it's best to experiment and find what works best for you. 100% Raw or high raw of course!

I think the most important thing to consider about fitness and overall health isn't weight but body composition and body fat levels. People have different body shapes, and are able to carry more/less muscle than others. We also all have different metabolisms. A smaller person might only be able to gain 10 lbs of lean muscle mass in a year, but that 10 lbs is going to make much more of a visual difference than if it was on a much larger person. 10 lbs of muscle will also look a heck of alot better than adding 10 lbs of fat through eating extra calories or a percentage of fats in an attempt to gain weight.

It's not so much about what you eat, but what you do that determines your body composition. I know people that eat absolute garbage but they train very hard and are in great shape. Imagine if they ate a clean lean raw diet? It takes it to a whole new level. If you are inactive and eat an excess of calories, weather it be junk or raw food, you are going to gain undesirable weight.

That makes sense-- he's going to have to find what works for him, and doesn't want to do it by just eating junk. He wants to feel good and would like to put on 15-20 pounds.
