Give it to me Raw

Since going raw my skin has slowly taken a turn for the worse. After the initial beatiful happy skin that I first had when going raw, about a month in, bumps formed all over my forehead and cheeks, then the rest of my face. Now its a horrible combo of lumps and zits. The bumps are almost rash-like, but there are zits too. Last night I made a face mask out of the goo from inside of an aloe vera leaf...and wore it overnight. Im doing the same again tonight. I don't know what to do. I drink heaps of water, ive tried eating more greens, more fruit, cucumber, simplifying my skincare routine, getting sun, ignoring it....I dont know what else to do! My skin wasnt like this before raw. Its been like this about two months now. Any ideas? It upsets me so much I don't feel like seeing people and I almost cry when I see my reflection in the mirror.

I am using coconut oil to cleanse/moisturise and that is all except aloe vera every other night. Do you think Hazelnut or some other oil is a better choice?

I am trying to up my greens even more (im gonna turn green lol!). I did the green juices but they seemed no different from the smoothies so I have returned to the lovely greeeen smoooothie.
Thanks Toeknee. hopefully it gets through the damn eliminating soon!!

I also agree about giving up products! I don't use moisturizer or anything anymore & I think that was key to my skin healing. There was a transition period were my skin had to relearn to moisturize itself & I decided I just couldn't look in the mirror for at least a few hours after my shower. After about a month or two (at the most, that I can remember) everything became like, perfect.

I just recently realized my eyelashes are beautiful the way they are & growing in thicker, so I've stopped using mascara this last week & I'm really happy about it.

Doesn't mean that I am personally done with the part were I use my skin as a channel for detox though, but for now it's been getting prettier & prettier & clear. Detox will happen in cycles, if my body wants to do more that is.

But that's exactly what happened to me, about 2 months into raw my skin went ballistic. But not like the usual adult acne I had, but more rash like, & bumpy, like you describe. On my forehead & down the sides of my face. It was rough, I totally wasn't social at all. I got off all products, & I had faith actually, in my body's process! I don't know, there is something inside of me that was peaceful, low self-esteem, but I just thought it was detox at the same time. I was definitely eating enough greens myself.

But yeah, I had so much faith it was my body doing what it was going to do to heal itself nicely etc... I ALSO thought it would last for like a year! Just in the mind set that I had to be patient! But by six months raw, doing really well at staying mostly raw day after day, my skin started to get beautiful!! The total time I was dealing with the flare up was like from March to June, (having started raw in mid Jan. 08).

I guess I had read some other accounts of this type of process the body goes through & I just had/have complete faith in my body & especially following the rules of nature as much as possible. So there was a sense of peace, even though I was sad about it.

I ate a little too much junk the last month though, & am having very slight problems again, but I can see how that's pretty much related to the cooked food.

I agree about all the emotional stuff too, sometimes the effects of turmoil can be delayed. By the time your happy again, is when your body is reacting.

I am going through another test of faith at the moment too, as I've been watching my hair fall out & get thin. I have read that this happens right before it starts to re-grow in thicker then ever. So just like my skin went crazy before making a huge leap in beauty, I am thinking my hair is about to do the same. I have hope because I did just watch my eyelashes grow in thicker. I just have to start being extra good to my liver again though & I might have to be patient with it for the next few months. I do notice some baby hairs already coming in though.

I'm off shampoo too, just water for me & an occasional strained lemon juice rinse.

I know it's hard, if you can just find some peace inside. If you can just have some kind of faith. I think your diet sounds wonderful. Sun was is SO key for my skin health. I had no idea the Sun was SO beneficial.

Thank you for your beautiful words and advice, Autumn. I must remember to have faith and patience like you did and do. I think this is definately a key thing to do. When I freak out the bumps seem even worse!

I love the sun. I'm definately doing that part right.

Thank you again xxx

Heya Pink, my sister in crime!

The elimination of the durian definately helped. The spots diminished in size and amount pretty uickly, but unfortunately haven't gone altogether. I think my nightly dried fruits habit was taking its toll on my skin, so as of tonight I'm stopping with those. Only fresh fruit, greens and a tiny bit of veg.

Perhaps like you said its detox, too. I guess a combo of things!

I am just using coconut oil for my skin, and same old makeup *just a powder*.

I think the aloe vera has helped my skin too, but I am going to only put it on every other night instead of every night so that my skin has a bit more room to breath.

How is your skin going? *hugs*

Thank you V,

I didn't put on aloe last night and my face seems a bit happier, so perhaps every other day? Or do you think I should cut it out altogether.

I stopped eating the durian about two weeks ago now. Its been hard. I loved that stuff! Once my skin clears I will have it for special treats only :)

Thanks for your support

I tried for about 3 months not to use moisturizers of any kinds on my face, but since moving from Oregon to New Jersey, the winter months especially take a toll on my skin. It gets extremely dry, to the point of cracking. I've been here for over 2 years now and my skin simply isn't getting used to the dry weather. (it's only humid in the summer... rest of the year, dry, dry, dry.)

My sister started making face scrubs and lotions out of all natural ingredients recently and asked me to build her a website for it. In the process of this, I began researching some of the ingredients that she used (only ingredients that are safe enough to put in your mouth) and found some great articles about coconut oil. This one is very informative. The Best Natural Skin Cream on the Planet

While I know that not everyone agrees that we "should" be using moisturizers on our skin, I just couldn't handle the dryness of it all any more. I'm only 32 so I'm at that fun stage where I still get acne, but over the top of dry skin. Ugh. So I decided that since I had some organic extra virgin coconut oil I'd give it a try and I've been having a love affair with my skin ever since. Absolutely no acne, and no more dry skin. I didn't even break out right before my period this month, and I've been getting some form of acne each month since I was 13.

I've even been using it on my psoriasis and have seen an improvement there as well. Of course, I've also been drinking Kombucha a lot lately which I know is also helping.

Then today I got my first sample of my sister's sugar scrub for the face... just when I though heaven couldn't get any better! Just remember, nature provides everything our bodies need. I actually look at my psoriasis and other past skin problems as a blessing. I consider myself lucky that I receive such obvious signs that there is something not balanced in my body and that it's time to do something about it. Sometimes we need these blatantly, in-your-face (literally!) messages to let us know before something really goes wrong. As long as you are aware that there is a problem, you can do something about it. Changes your whole perspective.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for that Candy. I have found coconut oil, (Im using organic extra virgin cold pressed food grade!) even the great quality stuff, to be much cheaper than all the other products I used to use and it seems pretty good on my skin *however its been hard to tell with these bumps, but I really don't think that its caused them or irritated them at all.

Is Kombucha raw? Where do you find it? Whats in it?

I like your unique perspective on seeing it as your body telling you that something is obviously wrong. I just wish I could find out what exactly my 'something' is!?!!

I usually buy GT's Kombucha at Whole Foods. It says "raw and organic." It's some kind of tea, I believe made from mushrooms or something, with raw fruit. I love it! The flavor takes some getting used to in the beginning, kind of vinegar-like, but I actually crave it now. I've seen a huge improvement in my psoriasis since drinking it.

When I was drinking it every day my psoriasis almost went away, but not completely, yet. Business has been slow this past couple of weeks, so only necessities which, unfortunately, means no Kombucha, so the psoriasis did come back a little. That's when I started using coconut oil on it and began seeing an improvement again. I can't wait till I can do the tea and the oil at the same time. 13 years of psoriasis and I may have finally stumbled upon a detox cure that doesn't involve heavy medication like steroids. I'm hoping so anyway, cause my 12 year old niece is covered in it.

That's where the attitude of "some things happen for a reason" comes from in me. If going through something like that as an adult could help a child not have to go through it her entire life, and especially through the teen years, then it's worth it both for me, knowing that I need to balance my body chemistry, but also in helping her.

Hey Jessica what's up girl! i saw your were having skin trouble. I have something very similar going on ...;been raw year and a half(at least 80-90%) but mostly 100% the first 3 weeks i was 100% and all my acne vanished !! and i was on the verge of accutaine !!! but then when i stopped eating aloota greens it came back ...and i am still struggling with it... so i've decided to do something different to hopefully get off cooked food for good, and take care of my acne

so this Wednesday was my b-day and i had been having really strong cravings...so i indulged!!! (all vegan but also all cooked :( )) i ate some b-day cake and as much mex-food as i could....and i felt terrible...which really reminded me of why i do what i do....

so now having been inspired by my own experimentation ... i decided that next week i am going to do a 2 week green smoothie fast.... then i am go to do the master cleanse for 10 days , which makes me nervous since i have never cleansed.

i know this didn't really solve your problem or give you anything you could use...but i really am in the same boat you are, and i personally am SOOO embarrassed by it since i'm at least 90% raw organic most of the time and this shouldn't be happening right??? but i really do empathize with you, seriously and if you want i will update you after my fasts/cleanse and see what happens

Hi, Jessica!
Initially what helped me ( same problem with bumbs..;-() was steaming my face one time a week ( to open my pores). I usually pour boiling water over herbs , seat under the cover for 15 min. I also use wheatgrass spray on my face --> water + wheatgrass + organic silica + MSM. Aleo Vera after. Aubrey Organics has this great gel lotion - I don't have it at the office, but can email you later with its name : great stuff!
And, I've noticed that if I go to bed by 11pm - my skin looks much better the next day than if later.
Post us with results please!
All the best!

yeah I have weird "issues" as well. Mine may be stress. But also detox. I just hope it doesn't continue or worsen once I start my work. I know it appears messy and unclean, and I want to make a good impression.
