Give it to me Raw

Since going raw my skin has slowly taken a turn for the worse. After the initial beatiful happy skin that I first had when going raw, about a month in, bumps formed all over my forehead and cheeks, then the rest of my face. Now its a horrible combo of lumps and zits. The bumps are almost rash-like, but there are zits too. Last night I made a face mask out of the goo from inside of an aloe vera leaf...and wore it overnight. Im doing the same again tonight. I don't know what to do. I drink heaps of water, ive tried eating more greens, more fruit, cucumber, simplifying my skincare routine, getting sun, ignoring it....I dont know what else to do! My skin wasnt like this before raw. Its been like this about two months now. Any ideas? It upsets me so much I don't feel like seeing people and I almost cry when I see my reflection in the mirror.

Hi Jessica

I think quite a lot of people go through this, I certainly know a few who have. Have you noticed whether you break out after eating anything in particular?

I found a few things that helped when I experienced a mass of small bumps all over my forehead and down the sides of my face

1. Stopped juicing fruits - I was making a lot of juice and taking the fibre out I think was giving me major sugar spikes. I now blend my fruits (esp with greens) or eat them whole.

2. Stopped combining high fat with high fruit - cutting out nuts was the biggest help with this but just a general awareness of bad food combination in terms of mixing fats and fruits will help. Reading 80/10/10 explained this a bit more.

3. Green smoothies (or juices) - these are excellent at promoting fast healing of your skin.

I wouldn't worry too much. Once you've sussed whether it's any of the above your body will heal pretty quickly.

I hope that helps, perhaps others can give you more advice.

Thanks Emma.

Im so confused though, I don't juice fruits, I pretty much eat an 8/11 diet...lots and lots of fruit, a green smoothie in the morning, and the only fat I eat is durian. I am wondering if the durian is the problem. I don't eat nuts or oils. It seems like when I began and ate less fruit I didn't have such bad skin...but I don't want to cut out my fruit!

That's very interesting. If you aren't eating Durian every day then that kind of suggests that it isn't the fruit fat combo. It's possible it could be a detox - I'm reluctant to say that to people as lots of people have said it to me when I know it isn't the case for me.

Before I moved to an 811 way of thinking I had cut out fruit and saw a major improvement but I felt so awful I needed my fruit. Kevin Gianni (Renegade Health show) has just done a show on a similar problem where he had zits all over his forehead - here's the link which explains what he did and it worked for him (oct 2 show)

Another thing I neglected to mention was that I got an intolerance test that showed up citrus (including tomatoes) as being a major intolerance for me. When I cut out all citrus it helped a lot. It's another possiblity...

Thanks for all of the information Emma! I eat many tomatoes daily so I wonder if citrus is an intolerance for me too. I have to admit- I eat half a durian a day *hides* I know its a lot but I can't seem to stop. So your skin is all in the clear now? Do you follow 811 (minus the citrus)?

Wow half a durian a day! I've never tasted one so I'm a bit jealous :) If you were testing the fat + sugar theory you might want to avoid the durian for a week (if you can) to see if there's any difference :) I don't even know how fatty they are?

Yes I don't touch citrus fruits at all now although I can't help myself with tomatoes because I love this tomato sauce recipe that I make - should try and cut down on it a bit as I reckon I still have a mild intolerance to them.

Doing all of those things I listed cleared up the problems that I was having a few months ago (which were exactly the same as the problem you describe).

I'm a believer in the aloe too - all over your face is good apart from when you accidentally lick it cos I don't like the taste :)

Just on the tomato/citrus thing, I cut out all citrus and tomatoes because they were making me break out. i think some people are sensitive to them. I can't eat corn, dates or potatoes without breaking out either.

Thats so interesting....what Kevin Gianni described is exactly the same symptoms as I am having- uniform little bumps very different to the teen 'acne' i suffered when I was younger. I am questioning all of my fruit and green smoothies now. Do you know what happened to him when he started to incorporate fruit back into his diet?

Yeah it is interesting. He puts it down to candida overgrowth which sounds entirely plausible given that he says he was drinking fruit smoothies all day (not sure what his fat intake was). I don't know what the update is only that after 4 days it had gone.

I guess the best approach would be to phase fruits back in like berries and such. If you think this might work for you then the plus side is that in a few days you could have cleared it all up. Then you'd be able to start from square one and see for sure what has an impact on your skin?

I've found callendula works on all kinds of skin problems applied externally.

Internally, Horsetail is good as a supplement or tea. It also made my nails grow super fast I have been using it for about a month.

In juice kale and parsely are great for purifying the skin. Kale evens out hormones.

I noticed I could break out the same day following eating coconut oil in something. Do you use it? Coconut oil is great for the skin externally though. Papaya or mango applied to the skin is supposed to be great at exfoliating.

Maybe you got a bad batch of nuts.. but when I worked in the sprout house at "The Tree" and people would stop by for wheatgrass juice- a lot of people were breaking out and they were only drinking green juice! For week or more fasts so it may be detox...

Thanks Rawzi,
I will have to look out for calendula...I don't think I have seen it around. I already have kale and I guess I could eat more parsley.

I don't use cocnut oil, however I've been thinking of getting some to use as a cleanser/moisturiser.

I dont eat nuts so that can't be it...and I thought initially it could be detox but I went through so many detox symptoms early on and they all passed pretty quick whereas my skin happened later and hasn't gotten better in 2 months. :( I'm desperate for it to go away!!!

Thanks so much rawzi x

Hey Jessica

maybe check your liver??
If you've never done a liver cleanse then I highly recommend it.
Anything external, or specific "skin-food" you would use or eat I feel only adresses the symptom, chances are that you might have a congested liver and need to get that sorted first.
Check out liver flushes on here, this has been discussed before in great detail.

All the best with it...............:)
