Give it to me Raw

I use a lot of plastic bags. I have a drawer with hundreds of bags.
Some things I don't bag, like some fruits. But others I do, like leafy greens. I'm worried the clerk has germs on their hands or there are germs on the conveyor belt. I saw this guy at the market throw a bunch of celery into his basket, no baggie. I cringed. Also, sometimes when I try to bypass the plastic bag, the clerk will just slam them into the brown bag and break my precious leaves apart. Or even worse, the clerk handles them with their dirty paws and then hands them off to the teenage bagger with grubby fingers. Drives me mad!!!
Should I not care about this from a sanitary standpoint? I try to re-use plastic bags but I always forget them at home, so I end up accumulating more and more. Any tips on how to simplify my produce shopping?

I throw all my produce except lettuce and the like right in the cart. I wash it when I get home. Oh and I' read somewhere on GITMR grapefruit seed extract is a good produce wash. If I do get a plastic bag I re-use it for bathroom trash back or for kitty poop. LOL

I also leave bags in the trunk of my car... this helps on spur of the moment shopping:)

I also read on GITMR that GSE is toxic :D. Here's the link: http://www.terressentials.com/truthaboutgse.html

i only put the green leafy stuff in a bag.

the cashiers look at me like i am crazy, or give me a dirty look.

come on, it's whole foods! they're supposed to be happy when you conserve!
it is funny, though, to have about 30 oranges rolling around on the conveyor belt. it's like a little orange dance party!

plastic can be recycled, but it still gives off fumes...

I work an an industry where there is a lot of hype over 'recycled'....it is better than using prime plastics, I agree ...but it is still leaching toxic gases, harming the environment, etc....so I am not a big fan. naturally biodegradable materials that don't have secondary environmental drawbacks (usually from mass-production) would be my first choice....

kind of off topic, sorry

and no I don't use bags unless my leafy greens are going to get smushed.

This must be an american thing, this germ phobia ! I was surprised to see ads in Readers Digest that encouraged people to disinfect everything all the time... In europe nobody bothers with that. Although sometimes stuff is sold in plastic packets, most of the stuff is sold loose, or in plastic nets.

Anyway, your veggies have gone through a lot, think of all the germs they picked up on the way to the store. The conveyor belt and the cashierÅ› hands don make much difference.

Well, I don think that they are any healthier than Europeans.

I'm very neurotic when it comes to my produce... I was a checker for many years and I see all the crap on that belt, and the toxic crap they use to "clean" it.
I reuse my produce bags and even the bags that bread comes in (vegan family, not all raw) and wash them and run them out to my trunk as soon as they are dry.

When I ride my bike to fetch groceries, I use my detachable basket and use the do it yourself scanner so no one touches my leafies.

I just throw all my stuff in the basket. I hate using all of those bags, and I wash everything with a veggie wash when I get home anyhoo. Chances are, there are contaminates from other grubby hands on your produce that you didn't see.

I've met some hit chix on GITMR. Not satisfying in the least. Just the opposite. Most communication is self-defeating, accomplishes nothing. I would love it if people would leave me alone when I'm out and about. Anybody else?

Mariam, watching this raises questions: for instance, is this guy just an actor? Seems like it. "Am I glad I went"? Well, in the sense that I knew I had to see him eventually.....I guess I got it over with (and used up my airline credit). Is he a...

also, a dr. friend told me that some of the waxy stuff can drip into your ear and do permanent damage. it does feel great, but i don't do it any longer. i've actually fallen asleep while having it done. =/

Thank you Wrenn that is what I thought too and your comments are very helpful! I think it would also be cool at $.99 for 5 TOTALLY new raw recipes and then it can be a series of them at $.99 each...thanks for your comment!
