I just got a new superfood powder and I am eager to add it to my fruit smoothies... but will it slow down the "natural" flow of things? Will the fruit take longer to pass through because i added the powder? I'm new to this sorry!
yess. VERY TRUE!! maybe i made the supplement thing sound too... eh... unhealthy. its made from wheatgrass juice powder, spirulina, barley grass juice ETC. I thought I would try it out... just to help me transition and didnt know where i could add it in... but was it the wrong decision? blah 30 bucks down the tubes

Spirulina contains a b12 analogue, which could potentially cause b12 deficiency, which is always a concern to vegans/raw vegans. Analogues are like the lock to a key. It looks like it fits, it goes in nicely, turns, but then doesnt open the vault. Instead, it snaps inside, so the fake key can never get out, and the real key can never get in.
Analogues have been shown to mess up b12 level readings in blood tests, for this reason.
This is enough reason alone to avoid using spirulina.
As for powdered foods in general, Im not convinced they are necessary. Sure, our soils might not be upto the pristine glory they once were, but if youre eating enough food and greens in general, you should easily have enough margin of error. For example I did a nutrient analysis on my diet the other day, and some of my nutrients were extremely high, even for optimum daily allowances. All of my B vits were about quadruple the RDA, two being over 1000% rda. My vitamin A was over 5000% rda, my vitamin C 2000% of the higher RDA (90, not 60), my omega 3 was around 4000mg (male rda 1600) my protein intake was 83g (i need 50 max) my amino acids were all double some even quadruple the rda. My Iron was 460%, my Calcium 180%, my zinc was 123% my magnesium was 400%...you get my point
If you eat enough, there is enough margin of error for the soils being depleted of certain nutrients. And fruits and vegetable are the most alkalising of foods. So as long as your bowels are working regularly, you exercise, you drink enough water, you sleep enough and manage your stress, and you keep your fat intake reasonably low, your system doesnt have to worry about alkalinity. Its meats, dairy, grains and nuts/seeds that cause acidity.
Wow that's awesome! Thank you for all your advice. Dang that's incredible congrats, where can I find this nutrient analysis you speak of? Lol. Well thabk you again I won't be spending my produce money on supplements anymore!

Youre totally welcome!
nutritiondata.com is my favourite site, but I really like cronometer too. You can download that one (its only about 8mb I think) for free. Just google cronometer. I like that one purely cuz its free, on the hardrive and works out individual micronutrient requirements for most things, but doesnt take into account exercise...yet. You can manually alter micronutrient intakes as well if you want to get a certain amount in, and use that as your own personal RDA.
Nutridiary.com is good for a less detailed profile too. If you want to find out amino acid requirements I recommend looking at this site, it gives WHO guidelines and NAS guidelines. I use NAS to be safe, though I do trust WHO guidelines.
You can work out individual requirements based on exercise, for calories, using nutritiondata or nutridiary...they have a pretty comprehensive exercise list which automatically works out the calories for you.
All of these are free and only with nutritiondata.com is it now essential to get an account (takes about 30 seconds though.)
Of course I dont believe in micromanaging your diet, I just like checking up on my nutrient intake every once in a while.
'no need to be sorry, cos we only learn by asking questions and cross checking the answers with our heartfelt intuition.'
err I learned by personally experimenting and experiencing things for myself. onto the superfood powder...I say give it a whirl and see what you think. i'm not sure what brand you have but I have gotten the most value out of green food powders when traveling. i have found them a great way to get some greens in and have noticed an alkalizing effect. at home and I tend to really on juicing, smoothies, wheatgrass and monster salads to get my greens in.
'all supplements do is create unbalance. there is no need for them.'
i often agree with much of what you have to say but blanket statements like the above just make my head spin.
i think what frustrates me the most about blanket statements like the above is that I really view our community as a whole as thoughtful, intelligent, inquisitive, open minded people. it really frustrates me to see opinion being thrown around as fact.
i seee.... thanks a bunch!!! yea im tryin to get as much greens as possible but i could use any boost i can get!! all this is very helpful!!! so it wont slow down the normal digestion of my fruit in the morning? because i know you shouldnt mix fruit with anything
i honestly really don't know the answer to that. personally I would rather have a fruit smoothie followed by a glass of grass and water b/c I wouldn't want to chance messing up the taste of my fruit smoothie!!

It depends which fruits really Most fruits can actually be mixed with certain things. Melons should always be eaten alone on an empty stomach. The rest should be ok really.

And so by not even considering what DR has to say, and assuming it is incorrect, you are being thoughtful, intelligent, inquisitve and open minded?
Everyone throws opinion around as fact, thats what people do. The whole point of debate teams and things in schools is that you learn to take on a stance, even if you dont believe it, and argue it with the full strength of your conviction. Its not up to the opinion-holder to provide a counterbalance to the argument, its up to the person who believes with equal conviction the counterpoint. Then people can start to consider both points of view equally, take the chance to challenge their own current belief systems and consider whether it needs re-evaluating or not, and if not, filing away the persons argument in the unconscious.
A "Blanket statement" it may be, but it does not mean its untrue. Rather than criticising him passive-aggressively to others, why not ask for the missing information that prevents you from considering his argument further? For example, So durian rider, that was a bit of a blanket statement you made there, sounds quite clear cut. could you explain what you mean abit please, as I dont really understand how what you're saying is true?
I like the fact that people have opinions on here, but people need to stop criticising and blaming each other for having them, and start asking questions...if we're so thoughtful, intelligent, inquisitive and open minded on here.
