Give it to me Raw

Okay, so being a mom and wife and working and commuting means that I don't get a lot of time to myself. This leads me to neglect being good to myself and wait too long to give myself a break, which leads me to make bad food choices and eat emotionally, and thus begins the downward spiral. So, I'm trying lately to carve out some time for myself and to do little things along the way that renew me.

With that in mind I'm trying to find non-food related things that just make me feel good. Things that always make me smile. So, I'm wondering what all of us do to renew ourselves that might not be the coolest things, or things you'd want to put on a t-shirt or bumper sticker.

I'll go first. My #1 non-food guilty pleasure is Old time gospel music a la "On the Wings of a Snow White Dove", "Angel Band" and "I'll Fly Away". A pleasure because I'm a southern girl who minored in folklore and I just love that stuff. Plus I love to sing and it's just so much fun to sing. Guilty because I'm a total humanist. I mean a religion-is-the-opiate-of-the- masses non-believer. (No offense to believers. I used to be one.) In the interest of setting the right example for the kids, I try to limit the religious music to the times when I'm by myself like in the car or shower.

So, your turn GI2MR. What's your non-food guilty pleasure?

I don't listen to or watch any news, but man.. I love falling a sleep to some NPR, public radio.

I guess mine would have to be posting nonsensical comments on raw food websites.

I'm generally a caring, sensitive chap who loves wildlife so to stay balanced I like watching violent horror movies, especially old european ones of which I'm quite a buff.

That's awesome. The folklorist in me also really loves what I call "blood and guts ballads" old old songs about murder and suicide and gallows ballads. Songs like "Frankie Silvers", "Naomi Wise", "Mathy Groves" Mathy Groves is great. It's got verses like:

He took out his sword
and he cut off his head
and he kicked it against that wall, wall
He kicked it against the wall.

Theres just something so hard and raw about them. Something that I think we've lost in our super soft and sanitized modern lives.

Can't really sing those to the kids either.

I do occasionally treat them to a gallows ballad like Sam Hall as those have an obvious moral. But I try to stay away from the particularly violent ones or those that mention suicide like Darcy Farrow, or where the moral is more subtle like "Dress of Laces"

I minored in folklore in college. I could go on and on:-)

I don't have any "guilty" pleasures, I don't believe in being guilty for doing things that uplift me and make me feel connected and good as long as I don't hurt anyone in the process. I too, use to be "religious" but now consider my spiritual journey a personal one.
That being said here are some of the things that make me soar on wings:

1. Walking half an hour before sunrise and watching the sun come up.
2. Meditation
3. Hiking in the back country (I used to live in the Eastern Sierras near the John Muir Trail)
4. Feeling the wind in my face, and going to the coast.
5. A nice sauna followed by a brisk invigorating shower.
6. Knitting socks or a hat or kufi for a friend.
7. Laying in a hammock in the shade on a quiet afternoon.
8. Listening to the birds when they wake up in the pre-dawn hours.
9. Soaking my feet after a long hike in a running mountain stream.
10. Singing and playing musical instruments in gratitude.
