Give it to me Raw

I've been raw about a month and a half and have been feeling great, with the exception of a little detox symptoms of gut irritation, skin breakouts etc. I began doing home enemas 2x week starting 3 weeks ago following instructions on this page for the garlic and acidophilus and had been feeling great afterward, no gassy, crampy feelings and tons of energy. Execpt for today, today I felt awful, awkward, uncomfortable and drained of all energy.
I also have had a long history of kidney infections which (knock on wood) I haven't had one in four years, that is I think until yesterday. I had fever, pain in my back on the left side, lethargy, crabby except not a single a moment of urinary tract infection symptoms. It is like a phantom kidney infection. I downed green smoothies, cranberry juice and clear water until I floated. Today is pain/discomfort only on the left side back near kidney and front under my ribs. But I slept for 5 additional hours this afternoon/evening, like I could not stay awake for anything.
My questions are: Why, why and why? Are these too related? Could it be a detox symptom? Should I go see a doctor (I'm not dying or anything)? Hmmm....
ANY input will be helpful.

Could be a lot of things really. Firstly, I wondered why you are doing enemas? Is there a purpose? It could be a kidney infection, it could be a sodium imbalance if you're drinking too many liquids and your sodium intake is non-existant. I wouldnt like to advise you on whether to go to the doctors or not, I think its your call really. If its something serious there could be big consequences for not going. If its not serious, there could be consequences if he just dumps you on some medication.

What are you eating whilst raw? Give us a specific example of your daily intake, including water, and any herbs, meds, supplements, enemas, superfoods, giving specific amounts and exercise levels.

I decided on the enemas because I would have to drive 200 miles to get a colonic and with the price of gas thats almost not an option. My eating is around such per day: Arise around 7:30 with yerba mate w/almond milk until I feel true hunger around 10 then I have a quart size smoothie with spinach, gogi berries, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, flax oil and sometimes maca, made with water. That will last until about 3 sometimes four and then I have a cuke, tomato. and avocado sprinkled with sea salt and pepper. Dinner ends up about 6pm and is almost always a mixed green salad with walnuts and dried cherries with olive oil lightly drizzled with lemon. Snacks are an apple or banana or cantaloupe.
Exercise: light treadmill walk daily 45-60 mins, with biking as transportation a couple miles a day. General calisthenics for muscle retention with some free weights tossed in here and there.
I personally prefer to not get the antibiotics the docs push considering my reaction to Flouroquielones , which after all these years is feeling GREAT since eating a raw diet. If it is a true kidney flare up, what foods/juices could be antibiotic-like?

And what do you want a colonic for, was what I meant? All I mean is, my experience with eating raw, was that I was dependant on colonics weekly and enemas daily for months, because nothing was happening; herbs had messed things up I think. I went raw, and within days I was going 3-4 times/day regular as clockwork.

what are the quantities of foods, specifically...I mean be specific. eg. 10am, 2 bananas, 2 cups strawberries, 3 cups blueberries, 2tbsp flax, 12oz water. What time do you snack on the banana, cantaloupe etc?how much do you eat when you snack? how many nuts with your salad? How much water do you drink in the day? How long after exercising do you wait to drink water and how much do you drink? How long after exercising do you wait to eat? What do you eat after exercise and how much?

Have you checked out something like nutridiary.com? For the amount of exercise you're doing, it sounds like you're not eating enough calories (though I am mindreading your portion sizes of course, which is why I want specifics). Really need to know your flueid intake too. Also sounds like your calories are largely coming from fats, avocado, nuts and oil in the same day plus not a lot of fruit.

If its a true kidney flare up, I would, if it were me, be going on watery foods like peahces, watermelon or something for a few days to see if it calms it down, or going on water exclusively for 3-4 days or so, drinking maybe 2-2.5 litres max. I couldnt possibly recommend antibiotic foods as I dont use such things, as I follow natural-hygiene guidelines. You would have to consult someone else about that.

I will take the time today to do the dietary count and review that. It seems to me that I'm not eating much food at all, that is compared to SAD when I ate everything all the time in copious amounts. I've also decided to get the advice of a naturopath here in town. After downing tons of water three days later I feel quite a bit better, only a slight discomfort in that area.

ahhhh.... that makes sense also. The mate does make me go quite often, and I didn't realize the maca could be culprit though. And thank you, I love my sea salt but it is out now. I'm interested in healthy organs not dis-eases.
I did input my food from just yesterday and I was consuming just over 60% of my calories from fat! Holy Cow Batman, it really adds up. I tweaked it around and kept a tsp of olive oil for my dinner salad and doubled the greens and added more berries and apples. The amount of food looks outrageous and yet the calories only came in at below 900. It was 80/10/10 though. I guess I should just buy the book huh?

One of the best things for kidney inflammation is celery. It breaks down uric acid crystals and you may have dislodged some that have moved into uncomfortable positions. I would try celery juice if possible. The other thing you may be low in is magnesium. If you could find hibiscus tea that would be really soothing as well. Zested orange peal in your smoothie or tea could help with pain as well.

I expected it would be at least 60% fat, but figured you ought to see it to believe it! Yea, the food might look like a lot of calories, but its only because you're coming from a cooked food mindset. Fruits and veg are high in water and fibre, so you imagine eating them, or actually eat them, that entire amount of food you put in the program, and you're like whoa, thats filling. But really its not filling because you're satiated; because you got enough calories. As you've seen 900 is way too low. Especially for someone who exercises. ITs because of all the water and fibre. which makes them low density, low calorie high volume foods.

When you consume cooked foods or high fat raw foods or dried fruits/foods as raw foods, you are consuming high calorie, high density, low volume foods. you get more bang for your buck in terms of satiation; it comes on super quick because theres no water in there to fill you up. So if you eat this diet (as most of us have grown up on cooked foods) for your whole life, what happens? Your stomach shrinks. Because you're used to eating such high density, low volume foods. So when you start eating raw foods, which are high volume low denisty, you think you're eating loads (especially cuz you've probably never seen anyone else eat that amount of fruit or raw veg in one sitting before). But in actual fact. you're not eating anywhere near enough calories. you just kid yourself you're full because your stomach is saying its full, because its stretched to its already shrunken capacity.

So what do we have to do? Slowly increase food intake. You're already eating lots of smoothies, thats great, so what I would recommend doing, is decreasing the water intake and increasing the food intake. Stocking up on higher density higher calorie foods like bananas will serve you well here too. You can get around 89-120 calories in a banana depending on their size, where as with apples you get 50 calories in an apple and considerably less in berries.

For example, I know I need to eat at least 16 bananas per day to maintain my body weight. When I first went raw, I was eating 6 or 7 per day, Along with 6 kiwi fruit for breakfast. and a salad for dinner. and wondered why after a month I had cravings. When I used nutridiary I couldnt believe how little I was eating calorically, yet couldnt imagine eating more. So I used smoothies to get the bananas up one day, and I would manage to get 9 or so in. I would be really full. Then the next day, I would eat 9 bananas, even If I wasnt that hungry. Or if I really couldnt squeeze them in I would do one of two things. I would either wait 30-60 mins. Or I would get some celery and lettuce with it. That seemed to help me tolerate more bananas. Within a couple of weeks I was upto 16 bananas per day minimum. My smoothies are virtually water free. I only put some in so they blend well, but they drink like syrup and I prefer them that way. Great with celery too, I sometimes use the sticks or lettuce leaves as spoons and eat it like soup.

It takes a little effort, planning and a bit of mental reprogramming, but you'll soon get the hang.

Thank you for the great advice and the eye opener! Here I was thinking I was doing great for the last month.... although in life you can always do better than you think you can. It's time to take stock in the great banana market!!!

Well you were doing great for your first month!!! Most peoples diets change ALOT when they go raw. They keep on tweaking and adjusting until they get the results they want. lol, yup the banana market is awaiting...
