I think that living in the moment is the most important gift we can give to ourselves.
If we are always living in the past, or the future, both of which seem to happen so much more naturally...then we are never really living. And how pointless does it seem to worry about a future that upon arrival in, we probably won't even be thinking about anymore. :P Or a past, that we can no longer do anything to change.
It is difficult, but not impossible. Living in the present moment is a goal I strive for to some degree every day.
For me it is like when making music, you achieve the paradoxical balance of completely letting go, yet at the same time consciously exerting your Will. It has been harder to achieve since childhood, and it seems that many people my age with similar interests (self-awareness, spirituality, art etc) are attempting to go back to that time, when being in the moment was second nature. Work, media overload, and being dominated by the ego-mind voice inside our heads dampens Living in the Moment at times.
