Give it to me Raw

Any tips on eating low-fat raw efficiently?

I did 30 days of 80/10/10 in January (averaging 2300 calories per day), but I found it hard to maintain. Eating more fat like nuts and avocados is easier for me (it's less time consuming and staves off hunger for longer), but my energy seems better on low-fat raw.

I can go til noon w/o eating fat no problem, but it's hard for me to get past lunchtime on fat-free foods without feeling a strong desire for something heavier.

I'm constantly going back to nuts because they seem more efficient than other foods. Lately I've been eating as much as 4 oz of macadamia nuts as part of a meal just because I know I won't be hungry for hours afterwards. On low-fat raw, I feel like I'm constantly returning to the kitchen.

I usually enjoy your posts DR, but I do believe that was the best post you've ever written. I really enjoyed that.

Im sceptical of whether orange juice despite maintaining some fibre, works differently to other juices. I wouldnt want to take the risk of damaging my liver. Why not just have Orange smoothie? Or eat the orange? I gotta disagree with Doug on that one.

I like that; 'peel and go'. Its catchy. Fast food for the masses.

I agree with what DR and El-bo have said, you gotta make sure you get enough calories in.
Use something like nutritiondata.com or nutridiary.com. Theyre really fantastic. You can input all your personal stats (eg. height, weight, body fat) and activity levels, record your daily exercise output (they have a massive list to choose from) which automatically calculates caloric expenditure. Then it will tell you how many calories you need to consume for that day.

Then you can log your daily intake of food, and work out your total days caloric intake and ratio of protein, fat, and carbs. If you undereat it will tell you how many more calories you need to consume. Then you can just keep adding foods until you meet your target.

I found it easiest to eat monomeals, then you can just say, ok, well I'll just add another banana, will that do the trick? No? Add another 2. Bingo.

Maybe do that for a week or 2 so you get the hang of it, then you wont need it anymore.

Also, if you're struggling with quantity, thats totally natural. We've been trained to eat low water, low volume, high density, high calorie foods (cooked foods, raw fats etc). When you eat mostly fruits and veg, you're eating a high volume, high water, low density, low-medium calorie food diet. So it takes a bit of time to stretch your stomach. I used smoothies to begin with because I could only manually eat 7-8 bananas tops. I would have a smoothie with as little water as I could get away with, and as many bananas. So I would try fitting 10-12 in. Then the next day trying to increase the amount more and more. Takes a couple of weeks to get the hang of it but it comes quickly. you'll be fine.

Good luck!

I watched some Utube videos about the 801010 diet and I feel it does make sense. In some ways I know that some people who are thriving on this regimen might bring forth valid knowledge because of their experience. but I don't feel like this diet is for everyone especially for people like me who haven't been raw long enough. I have been on average 70-90% raw ever since January of this year. There are people like Victoria Boutenko who strongly believe that a fruitarian diet isn't natural to us and that is what the 80/10/10 diet is. 10% dehydrated 10% fats and 80% vegies and fruits. I think this diet works for people who have been raw for a very longtime and feel satisfied from eating lots of fruits. I on the other hand feel satiated when I consume a good amount of greens and fats. Unfortunately lately I have been eating 50% raw and have noticed that my hunger has increased because I eat more starch and very minimal amount of greens. Victoria Boutenko explores the role that greens play in the diet. She says that Gorillas, Chimps and other primates graze on greens which constitute a large part of their diet. In the past growing up i ate a lot of fruit. I ate more raw fruits growing up than vegetables. Greens are one of the most alkalizing foods even more so than fruit. It really just makes sense that our bodies are designed to consume a lot of greens. I think you have to ask your body the question: Do I feel satiated eating fruit or Do I feel satisfied eating greens and fats from nuts? It honestly sounds as if your body fills up on plant fats and greens. I hope this works. Check out Eating for Beauty by David Wolfe and any Victoria Boutenko book. Good luck.

We arent fruitarians naturally, we are frugivores, which means we eat veggies nuts and seeds as well as fruit. Perhaps you should read 80/10/10, as I believe you have been misinformed. 80/10/10 Definately promotes ALOT of greens as well as occassional nuts and seeds. 80/10/10 is actually a ratio of calories. Doug recommends 0% dehydrated foods, not 10%. Doug recommends 10% fat maximum, 10% protein maximum, 80% carbs minimum.

You have mistakenly thought that its fruit OR greens and fat....what about fruit and greens AND a small amount of fat? I often eat 2-4 heads of romaine lettuce per day, plus 10 sticks of celery. I also eat fruit vegetables, such as half a cucumber, and 2-3 cups of cherry tomatoes, often more. PLUS I eat between 16-24 bananas per day for carbs, 3-5 mangoes, and half-1 avocado, depending on how much exercise Ive done, and how many bananas Ive eaten (the more bananas, the more avocado...although never more than one).

Its always a good idea to get information from the original source, and not 2nd, 3rd or 4th hand information...especially from youtube. Get yourself a copy of 80/10/10 if you want more info.

Oh by the way I really respect David Wolfe and Victoria Bouteko's knowledge and insights on nutrition. I have been going crazy because there are knew views on how a person should be raw and they all conflict with oneanother. david wolfe has one of the most balanced yet healthy views on nutrition. The other question you can ask yourself is How does my body burn energy? Does it burn sugar? Does it burn fat? I might be paraphrasing but this might be in one of the David Wolfe Utube videos. I don't remember which one. My body burns sugar first. The fat sticks to me and I think that might be why I am full when I eat a diet that has a substantial amount of plant fats. I feel hungry on a low fat diet. We are suppose to eat fat and I think this might be our survival mechanism. At this point a fruitarian diet makes little logical sense to me but if some people thrive on it then it is valid.

If you are not getting enough carbs, then of course you will feel hungry on a low fat diet. You are starving yourself. We need fuel, and greens wont supply you with that. They provide micronutrients and very little else.

Im guessing when you tried it, you didnt eat anywhere near enough food to keep you fuelled up.

steve, you have you been experimenting with hemp seeds at all? personally I am not concerned with maintaining an 811 balance right now but I do feel that a banana spinach...or banana spinach blueberry hempseed smoothie in my case fulfills me a lot longer.

imo hemp seeds are much easier to digest than nuts and provide nutrition that the bodily can readily absorb and use. i love them and add them to most of my salads and smoothies.

I would encourage you to eat oranges instead Vampi. Whole food is always best. Oranges are a perfect food; lots of sugar, and lots of fiber to slow down the absorption into the blood stream. Take out all the fiber and you've got a blood sugar spik...

since I find no reason to believe in 'allergies' against 'natural' appropriate stuff, I would think it's more likely just the fact that pineapple if bought in store is pretty much always unripe. Not that it matters to the situation perhaps. ...but...

Nicolas have you ever had a pineapple that does not give symptoms. In my experience around these hoods where we are there are practically no ripe pineapples..or perhaps a few dunno

Yes ma'am. Resting as completely as possible with eyes closed; getting enough water; avoiding too much sun; avoiding toxic substances (personal care products, cleaning products, etc.)
