Give it to me Raw

I went to the farmer's market on Saturday and picked up a bag of cashews(unsalted) and alot of other great things. I even found medjool dates, yeepie!!

Well I made a salad and springled some cashews on it and it was great. Later on I started nibbling on a few, well, alot. On Sunday was pretty much the same thing I ate a few cashews and immediatley my top lip starting swelling, I could feel it getting big. I jumped up from the sofa and looked in the mirrow and yep it had swollen up. I crab a cube of ice and wrapped it in a paper towel and put it on my lip. The swelling went down finally all was well the next day. I haven't eaten another cashew since then. I still have more than half a bag left. :(.

Has anyone else experienced this with cashews?

I've never been tested to see if I'm allergic to any nuts, only mold's, grass and ragweed.

I would hate to waste these nuts.

a lot of people are allergic to nuts, although I'd think it's weird that you have never experienced it before...

I'm sure you've had a cashew before in your life without having that reaction? Who knows, but better safe than sorry right? A half bag of cashews wasted is better than messing up your body.

I guess I've never eaten as much of them before Sat-Sun. I didn't think that I had that many actually.

You got a point about better to waste a half a bag of cashews then messing up the body.

thanks BTW I called a coworker and asked if she wanted them and said yes, so now I feel better. :)

as rawzi said, you can develop allergies out of nowhere. maybe your intestines let a small particle of cashew into your blood stream and your body is just freaking out. from what i've read you should avoid any possible allergens for 90 days and then try reintroducing them. i had a similar experience with honey roasted peanuts years ago but who knows what i was actually reacting to.

I truly hope it's just a residue or something that you interacted with, and not an emerging allergy. But of course you never know, a good soak before trying again wold pretty much settle it.

I'm in love with cashews right now, so I feel extra bad. Hope it gets worked out!

I've heard that as well. I just wonder how companies are able to market them as "raw"? I'm sure there's some method out there that involves low/no heat.

I would suggest that you do not try eating the cashews again. Swelling, etc. can lead to a severe reaction or anaphylaxis (which is unpredictable).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaphylaxis#Symptoms

You already had hives ( lip swelling). I recommend that you give the nuts away to someone that can tolerate them. Don't eat them or any other nut or any other food you are allergic to any time soon. Your immune system is attempting to warn and protect you. LISTEN.

If you were allergic to cashews then you would have ended up VERY ill, probably deathly ill if untreated. Most people are allergic to more than one nut (yea I know cashews aren't technically a nut, but I'm sure we all can agree they are a nut). If you've never had a reaction like this to other nuts before then you are probably mildly sensitive and the large amount you ate caused the reaction.
We shouldn't be eating large amounts of nuts anyway. I'm allergic to nuts and cashews have proven to be the most 'potent', judging by my reactions, and by allergy testing when I was a kid. Peanuts were bad but the most minute amount of cashew caused the worst reaction. It's likely that cashews have the highest concentrations of whatever the allergen is.

Another thing to consider is that cashews are a very heavily sprayed crop. If they weren't organic then you may have had a reaction to a chemical(s).

Don't eat nuts, especially if they aren't raw, aren't organic, and aren't fresh.

Wow, that's very interesting. Thank you.

Thanks guys for your input.
Robby-I believe I will stay far away from cashews.
Rawclimber-I did not know that cashews were poisinous(the shells) I guess I need to do my research.
NavarraK-you're are right, I better take heed to that warning. :)
Rawkey-that's something to consider
durianrider-I do not have a compost, I gave the cashews to one of my coworker's.

With all of this information I'm afraid to try them again.

im confused. matt monarch swears by regular colonic hydrotherapy. its his no.1 raw tip, didn't think it could be dangerous but now it kind of makes sense. enemas seem much more natural in comparison.

I've heard great, great things about Living Light Culinary Arts Institute in Fort Bragg, CA. I know that isn't really in the Los Angeles area, but it's still in CA and I believe they provide students the option to stay in their 'Living Light Inn'....

The way I see it is that generally people who label themselves are confident of the path they have chosen while, also generally, people don't don't label aren't quite as sure if what they're following is the right way to go.

things that have actually worked for me: Valerian root for tea - very calming... Lemon juice, sliced lemon peel, lemon grass or lemon verbina, raw honey, star anise (optional), maybe some ginger, hot water (let it all infuse together for a while) ...
