Noah. Check out www.slowfood.com
Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic member-supported organization that was founded in 1989 to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.

We'll have only local choices as this oil-driven fantasy we call life in the US fades away. It has to happen. Lot of people will suffer. Time to green the roof is now!

I love this question. I recently did an info card on buying local that was displayed at the office by our green committee (I'm a chairperson). I can actually get kindof preachy about this, because we're surrounded by farmland here, but too many people get all their produce from the grocery store.

I live 25 miles from the nearest farmers market but that's way better than the carrot that travelled 1500 miles to my grocery store. We have a rule in our house, "If you can get it at the farmer's market, you're not allowed to buy it a the grocery store." So, on market day, I hit the farmer's market first, and then head for the grocery store for the few things that I can't get at the market. There are so many reasons to buy local not the least of which is the cost of FM vs. grocery store, it's just stupid not to buy from there. There I go getting preachy again ;-)

I go by this too! :-) It's a good thing kale is plentiful this time of year. Watermelon is great too! Apple and pear trees are nearby my house. I try to get the most local products at the grocery store as well.

Nice house rule. Run for state senate and pass tax incentives for people who buy food locally. I figure 80% of what I am eating this summer comes from the West Chester farmer's market and roadside stands, but stuff like ginger root, limes, lemons, and mangoes come from far away. Love those local lettuces especially. This winter I'll have to revert to WholeFoods and the other supermarkets for most of my produce needs. I stopped eating bananas after reading Dan Koeppel's "Banana: The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World". Never realized how much evil our government has perpetrated on behalf of banana profiteers.

In summer, about 80%. In winter, we are very limited as I live in a cold climate. I enjoy local root vegetables all winter, but my greens and fruit are shipped here. I think it's time to move to a warmer area!
