What?! I can't believe what is happening to our food supply and this really sucks for me since I'm a huge mango fan.

Yes, some Indian mangoes are now being irradiated (I have read this elsewhere as well). I'm sure that they are severely degraded in quality, but I don't think enzyme wise it would be the same as cooking (however, I would rather not eat irridated or cooked food). I'm not sure about the papayas, but a lot of irradiated foods are replacing the conventional in the States. At least you can sometimes tell with genetically modified food, with the 8 prefix on the PLU (9 is the prefix for organic).

Some nuts and seeds can definately become rancid quickly. It is one way to assure if something is raw or not :-). Even my raw but dried pumpkin seeds have to be refridgerated or else they spoil quickly. Sunflower seeds are almost always truely raw. A sprouting test can almost always be used for seeing if something is raw or not. "Raw" cashews are almost never raw. Cashews are part of the "Anacardiaceae" family, which is the same one that poison ivy, oak, and sumac are in. The cashew shells have the urushiol. which is what makes poison ivy give you the horrible rash. Thus, the cashew itself can never touch the outside of the shell (I don't think consumers would care for a horrible rash in their throats). Instead of using a mechanical process, almost all cashew harvesting companies steam or boil the cashews. Luckilly there are a few "truly raw" companies out there for cashews. See the article I read this from. Almonds are also apperently very hard to find truly raw.

As far as a danger excess of 10% of your caloric intake, I have seen lots of evidence for the opposite being true. When I first started at my attempt to be healthier, I was a complete anti-fat advocate. I now highly support certain good fats. Your body *needs* certain essential fatty acids, as it can not produce it on its own. Your body uses fat for energy storage, as it is more than two times calorically dense than carbohydrate or protien (many other reasons as well, I'm sure). Your body can hold very little readily available carbohydrate, which is one of the reasons "carbo loading" does not work very effectively. I believe that the "second wind" you get after running or doing exercise is when the body starts tapping into it's fat reserve. When food is raw (and edible), the body can effectively manage any form of caloric intake. It knows if it needs more fat, more minerals, or to just dispose of it. Cooked food does not give your body nearly as much vitamin, mineral, and enzyme content to work with. Numerous books I have read show that a good amount of fat intake is essential. After eating a whole avocado, or even two in a day, I feel great. After eating half a coconut I am fine. If I could have raw milk, I would prefer it whole (cows milk has about 45% calories from fat, and I doubt mother's milk is very far from that). My view on this, is that unless you are eating only fat all day long, you are fine. Your body definately needs other things from different types of food, however.

Cheers!

That's why sprouts are the perfect food and important to try to grow your own! They have vitamin c, a, and a lot of protein- 50gs per pound! =) I think peaches and nectarines are just as good or better than mangos and papayas anyway= you can get them locally here and they make excellent pie! Thanks for the info!

fat takes 12 to get into the bloodstream in which time it is not fuel fat takes 12 hours to get out we do not burn fat as fuel except in the state of ketosis which require some extreme starving conditions and leaves toxic ketones, there is a difference betwwen dietary fat and body fat, efas come from fruits and vegatables theres no need for overt fats other than you like them they provide a numbing feeling of being satiated but will not replenish your strength when you need it. the body does convert everything to sugar that we eat this also diverts energy and takes energy, sure if i was starving i might eat some cooked mangos but id rather rehydrate dried raw fruit first

so is it the same for organic mango's and papayas as well?

"Schwab (U.S. Trade Representative) said more Indian organic food products certified according to USDA standards by Indian agents are expected to begin flowing soon into the United States. Irradiation is not permitted on organic foods."

I just did a little more reading and have found that foods entirely irridated (so produce, or processed foods with 100% irradiated ingredients), must have "treated with irradiation" on the packaging. I do not remember in all of my shopping excursions or label reading ever seeing that text or anything like it. There is a logo that is also used. See this article.

Cheers!

"People need to check the labels and do the best they can and Rawk On!!"

Very well stated! I'd also like to add we shouldn't judge others just because they're not following the Raw regimen we're on. If you dig around enough you can always find another "expert" finding out that this or that isn't good for you. Heck I remember hearing the debate for years how eggs weren't good for you then they were then they weren't...You get the idea. :-)

I don't think this exists for humans yet, unfortunately - but what I think would be the healthiest mattress (and virtually free of dust-mites, even bed-bugs which inflict some homes recently) for humans would be the same as the healthiest for pets...
