Give it to me Raw

Has anyone heard of VegiKILN dehydrators? They claim to work exactly the same as Excaliburs, and they offer a 10 tray version at a cheaper price.

Here's what one site says:

Finally, a square dehydrator series that includes horizontal front to back drying similar to another very well known and popular brand, but at a much lower cost!

Pragotrade VegiKILN 10 Tray Food Dehydrator is the perfect food dehydrator for all your healthy living needs!

The perfect way to preserve fruits, meats, vegetables, herbs, breads, and flowers! Easily make healthy, delicious and natural snacks like banana chips, fruit roll-ups, yogurt and jerky. Retains natural flavor of foods without additives or preservatives.

* 10 large, removable, drying trays provide over 1 square foot per tray of drying space

* No bulky front door/cover required - each tray's front lip seals to the tray above it to contain air movement within the dehydrator

* Each tray measures 14 1/4" x 10 3/4" (36.2 x 27.3 cm)

* Foods release from trays easily (Excalibur's ParaFlexx® Sheets may be cut to size to fit these trays)

* Color coded, adjustable thermostat from 84 to 155oF (29 to 68C)

* 600-watt heating element with 5 1/2" ultra quiet fan (8 and 10 Tray), 500-watt (6 Tray)

* Even drying, tray rotation not necessary

* Rear-mounted drying system circulates air from back to front through each tray

* Solid ABS polymer construction

* Easy to use....easy to clean

* Includes instruction and recipe book

* One-year limited manufacturer's warranty

VegiKILN 10 Tray Food Dehydrating System

Product Weight: 17 lbs.

Product Dimensions: 18.5L" x 13.5W" x 13.5H"

This site's offering a 10 tray dehydrator for $149 with free shipping:

They also sell 8 tray and 6 tray versions, which are also cheaper. Most 9 tray Excaliburs go for about $210, so this is obviously a hell of a lot cheaper. Seems like a good deal, but I've never heard of this name brand. Does anyone have any experience with them? Do they work just as well as Excaliburs?

guess I'll have to buy it and find out for you.
though, with my luck, the site will be a scam and i'll end up getting a dead gopher in a large fed ex box.

That's an excellent point. Hadn't thought of that at all.

I wonder if I could fashion some kind of cover.

Even if they are as good as an Excalibur, for cheaper, butts to them as I placed my order for an Excalibur last night :P

Might I just say that I am impressed with Excalibur's online service so far. I've gotten emails at every step, order received, order processed, order shipped, and now it's just the wait 'till it gets here.

Er - so yeah, I've never heard of these people, and I have the same concerns about making something that has a height larger than the trays.

Hi this is Shauna- I am the CEO of Excalibur- Excalibur has been in business working with the Raw Food Community for over 20+ years and we are here to help you in your journey to better health..

We are not ones to put down another dehydrator so I will just state some facts that are important when considering purchasing a dehydrator. I know that price is a factor- but you will get what you pay for. This unit (Vegkiln) is manufactured in China and goes under many names-

One thing I can tell you is it is important to have a door so that you can get the most out of your dehydrator. You can use every other tray or use the whole chamber to warm soups or veggies and other large items. The door also should be dark to protect the light sensitive vitamins during the drying process.

Another thing to consider is the Motor, I know the motor used in this dehydrator is smaller then the ones we use on our smallest 4 tray dehydrators, so the air flow will not be as good. Some say that Excalibur dehydrators are loud- but that is because we use only high power motors - which move air- it is important for proper food dehydration. - the smaller the motor, the less the air moves so it will take longer to dry and when dehydrating at the lower temperature for raw foods it is important that the dehydration takes place as quickly as possible - the longer it take the more chance of mold.

I know that price is a factor- But in this tough economy it is really important that a product gives you the most for your money. If you are strapped for cash like most of us are we do have factory refurbished units available on our website for around $159.00 here is the link. http://www.excaliburdehydrator.com/-2900-3900-R-Excalibur-with-10-Y...

If you have further questions we are here to help- whatever dehydrator you choose to purchase may you have health and happiness :)

There is a great fruit wholesaler in town, specializing in Local, organic fruit actually. All I need is a few people, a car and one willing person to go up there with me at some unholy hour (they close at 9am) once a week and it's beautiful fruit ...
