I have been on a predominantly high raw food diet since September last year yet I have recently been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. However, previous to this and still now, i'm yet to see and feel any improvements in my health since going raw. I know that many people experience lots of positive improvements when going raw yet this has not been the case with me. Does anyone have any useful information they may be able to pass onto me to help me in my recovery?
The halogens are five non-metallic elements found in group 17 of the periodic table. The term "halogen" means "salt-former" and compounds containing halogens are called "salts". All halogens have 7 electrons in their outer shells, giving them an oxidation number of -1. The halogens exist, at room temperature, in all three states of matter:
- Halogen bulbs consist of gas from the halogen group I believe. I don't think you are exposed to the gas unless you break the bulb, but who knows.
The seaweed probably gave you iodine that helped flush out these other halogens you ingest from everyday living which fill the iodine receptors in cells causing havoc. The iodine books I quote here are wonderful. Information for everyone who is interested in peak health -
Iodine deficiency isn't rare at all- in fact, it's very common. There are holistic doctors that are studying iodine and ALL of them report that an average of 90% + of their patients are deficient. In fact, some parts of the US have always been iodine deficient, like the Great Lakes basin. They started adding iodine to salt in Michigan back in the 20's or 30's because of the high rate of goiters there.
The author of this book is stating that iodized salt is ineffecive and harmful. Each generation tends to be more deficient, and in the 70's bromine replaced iodine as a bread dough additive (bromine is also in most upholstered furniture, mattresses and car interiors- it's a flame retardant). So, we have a huge amount of bromine exposure. Bromine directly competes with iodine in our body, as does chlorine and fluorine.
Iodine deficiency really is a big deal- it can be the tipping point for many people. Low iodine is strongly linked to breast and prostate cancers- The reason that Japanese women have such a low incidence of breast cancer is because they average an intake of around 13mg/day iodine (13,000 mcg.)intake (our RDA is only set at 200mcg). Huge difference.
When I did the loading test, sure enough, my levels were very low.
Iodine deficiency is not rare, I agree, I never said that. I said it was rare in vegans/vegetarians. Though reading back that isnt what I meant to say either. I meant to say clinically proven data showing that iodine deficiency is more common in vegetarians/vegans is rare.
I think Japanese women having a low incidence of breast cancer is not just about their high iodine intake, I think its also about the fact that their dairy intake has been traditionally next to nil, and their meat consumption has been low, typically relying on lots of veg, rice and soy.
Im glad the author says iodized salt is inneffective and harmful. I didnt know bromine is/was used as a bread dough additive in the US.
I am definitely interested by the subject and will have to get hold of a copy.
The books are amazing.
He means inadequate use of iodized salt b/c iodized salt is one of the mainstreams' ways of acquiring iodine. Although its only 10% bioavailable and poisonous - the book is not written for enlightened vegans - its for regular people -but this topic of iodine stretches to all people. Adding iodized salt probably wouldn't help anyway and he does not tell you to do that. I just wanted to let you and everyone know that as a vegan, we are more likely to be deficient in iodine than meat eaters.
The common sense part.- Not meant "you get it or you're dumb" Read the book and what it states - especially someone with some disorder or illness will completely be able to relate with and will find it to be very simple and will be very unhappy with the medical establishment that ignores this simple, common sense approach to not poisoning oneself and being able to test and manipulate ones personal halogen toxicity. Understanding is key.
Raw vegan doesn't mean anything when it comes to iodine deficiency / halogen toxicity-.
Its $20, buy the book, read it, if I'm lying let me know and I'll buy it from you.
You seem to like knowledge Debbie, this is very very useful knowledge for humans, not just raw vegans.
The book doesn't state that we are deficient because of any lack of animal products- it says nothing like that.
All it says is that some parts of the world are naturally absent of iodine in the topsoil because of things like glaciers washing the topsoil away, and that because of things like bromine, chlorine and fluorine exposure, many of us have a chemically induced deficiency. The Center for Disease Control says that US iodine levels have dropped 50% over the last 30 years.
He doesn't recommend eating seafood to correct it, either. He recommends a tablet form of iodine called Iodoral.
It's such a great book! My holistic nurse practitioner made me read it;) I've been on Iodoral for a few weeks- so far no adverse reactions. I tried another iodine, but it didn't do the trick and I think it made me feel worse, fatigue-wise. I'm doing really well, now, though:)
I happen to have grown up in the "Goiter Belt" i.e. Michigan- no wonder my levels were low, lol!
I just quoted the chart that stated diets that may cause iodine deficiency as an eye opener for non-meat-eaters to pick up the book. It in no way promotes eating meat or salt. It does say exactly what I wrote and it means what it says and is right. You are absorbing it in the wrong context.
Its about toxicity more than iodine deficiency in most cases I think. Its not that people today aren't getting enough iodine (baseline numbers) its they are being exposed to way too much bromine, fluorine, and chlorine which are very identical to iodine and when taken up by iodine receptors in the body, cause all of these many many symptoms. Everyone knows that fluoride, bromine, and chlorine are bad for you, so why don't people know what they do inside and HOW these poisons wreak havoc. This book explains this stuff very simply...
That sounds nice! I don't think sea water itself has a very high iodine content like seaweed does, though. I suppose someone could do seaweed wraps like they do at spas;)
Hi, Francine. My ex-girlfriend of about four years had Fibromyalgia, which, as you may know, is like CFS except with excruciating pain and 'trigger points' which, when pressed can be so painful that they knock you out. I went to a lot of doctors with her, and sat in on several support groups that were combined with people suffering from CFS. And I do mean suffering, for those of you who haven't been in contact with people diagnosed with this, it's real, it sucks, and it can be life-shattering.
The reason why I wanted to post is because my ex spent several thousand dollars on varying treatments and endoscopies and nutritionists and not once did any miracle cure come her way. She has gotten a handle on the illness, but it was very hard for her to feel all the time like she was doing something wrong because she wasn't achieving the same results as others.
Please, don't beat yourself up. The illness is bad enough as it is. Worse, is when you have to deal with that implied (but never outright stated) opinion that if you are sick, you just aren't trying hard enough. And this is, to put it midly, incredibly insulting to those who have fought, and loved those who have fought with serious illnesses.
This is where my big beef with the whole raw food can cure all mentality comes from, because the flip side is, that for people who are suffering form real medical diseases: AIDS, Mental illness, etc--if they would just try harder then they could cure everything with the well-timed coconut.
Sorry for the rant; I guess I'm still a little sensitive on this. But be strong and be healthy, but mainly--be good to yourself. Your soul needs you to be its best friend.
"The way dis-ease is cured is by removing the causes and re-establishing the conditions of health, rather than paying £££s for miracle cures and 'treatments'. Eating our food undamaged is just one facet of this. "
If you have juicer (best yield comes with non centrifugal) then try juicing ginger root and adding it to either warm or hot water to drink. I use use ginger and cayenne a lot especially in winter as the are both circulatory stimulants and therefor...
Marinated black olives are perfect healthy raw treat for any givin moment. I love having these marinated olives with a bowl of fresh wild baby rocket leaves or any mixed baby leaves and a glass of water.
