hey guys i need some help/ advice.
I am going on a kayaking backpacking trip next week and will be completely away from civilization for about a week. any tips for raw foods that are easy to carry, light, portable, storable?
I have some green and fruit powder and have dehydrated some fruits on low, but i know that this wont be enough...
so any of you trekers out there, what are you tips for staying raw and wild?
I am a rock climber, and with every rock climbing trip there is hiking and camping...
the last trip I went on I brought tons of bananas (make sure you keep them at the top of your bag so they don't get smashed)
and i used hard containers and put fresh fruit in them --- strawberries, grapes, plums, and whatever...
oranges are easily kept in the heat, along with kiwis, avocados, and many more...
if the fruit is easily smash-able, then put it in a hard container thingy... oh and eat the berries and grapes the first few days, as they will rot the fastest.
if you eat bars, you might consider bringing LARA bars or something, for backup... since they are easily stored.
i know im so excited about this trip
i will have some raw food bars with me, maybe take some of my biopharma bars
ashley- as to the fruit, isn't it too heavy and take up too much space? if it were a day it might work but four days with limited space makes it difficult...
well i call them biopharma out of habit and an inside joke so I probably should have referred to them properly here... haha
but they are the
"UltraLean" bars by biogenesis
and they are completely amazing! they have all kinds of kinds from chocolate mint (my favorite) and i think they just started a chocolate spice line.
But what i love about them :
1) THEY ARE RAW!!!
2) they are not lara bars... i am so sick of those bars and cant stomach nuts really anymore so these bars have been a life saver for the times when i'm on the go but need a meal in a small space
3)they are "Gluco-Support" so sugar crashes afterward are not going to happen
4) they are macro nutrient balanced: rich in phytonutrients, fiber, have essential fats, organic, no additives, etc and
5)PACKED WITH VITAMINS AND MINERALS
The only bad thing is i dont know where to buy them from locally. my aunt is a chinese herbalist/ accupuncturist and I get them special order from her
but i totally recommend them for not only adventurists, but anyone! they are amazing!
ha ha yes it was kind of heavy.... I didn't know what else to do --- as I was on the 80/10/10 diet so I only ate huge amounts of fruit and veggies...
I told myself that the added weight will only make me stronger.
But did I mention that I am an extremely light packer??? I used to even win the "lightest packer" award when i did expedition camps and stuff. =)
So I always have tons of room for JUST FOOD.
but i realize how it can be inconvenient.... so yeah if I were doing a really serious trip and wanted to make my pack as light as possible, I'd give into eating raw food bars...
but i'd still bring bananas, as i couldnt live without them.... as you go your pack will get lighter, ya know!?
im a light packer too but i just dont want to be a nuisance because im the only one raw. there are vegans on the trip, but now raw foodies that i know of ... so i dont want to seem selfish by only carrying my food haha
It's not selfish, it's making a statement and setting an example. Nutrition is #1 and if I have to carry anything, it is going to be what is fueling my body.
fresh dates and other moist but dried fruits are great. High in carbs to keep you going, yet light and space efficient. I like to put them into my waterbottle and let the fruit sweeten the water a little, and chomp it down once the water is gone. The soaked, dried fruit will digest much easier as well.
I have done a 40 day water fast before. So I guess for some people it miight be dangerous but it works for me. I do better on water then juice fasting.
thanks guys. when you were doing that neet what sort of fruits were you eating? i need some low gi fruit ideas. i think i'm gonna try your method out :) i can handle loads of apples for one and berries but not sure on what other fruits would be fr...
