Give it to me Raw

Hi-
I have been high raw for 4 months, and in the last month, maybe 3 weeks, I have experienced a lot of hair loss..in the shower every day chunks of about 10-20 strands fall out...I have very thick hair, so it's not noticeable, but wonder what this is attributable to...has anyone else experienced this??? My nails are strong still, but I am wondering if this is a detox thing, or if I am eating insufficient B vitamins (hard to fathom, really) or protein (I eat about 10% protein on a 1600 calorie a day diet)...I am reading on the Mayo site that physical and or emotional changes can manifest as hair loss up to 3 months later, and I know that my detox was strong (not crazy strong, but like pimples and greasy hair and fatigue) for about 2 weeks, so perhaps this is just the aftermath of that.

Updated: okay, so i just bought a supplement for Hair Skin and Nails from the HFS...it has a bunch of vitamins in it..I took one pill, which is 1/3 the dosage they recommend, and with 20 minutes, my scalp stopped tingling. I don't know which ingredient in the pill might have helped. Perhaps the Biotin?

Anyone know raw foodies consumption of biotin? It's found in grains, eggs, and a bit in spinach, mushrooms and corn...also in legumes....Biotin is critical for hair growth etc, and this was the nutrient that the guy at my HFS suggested might be deficient for me.

I am going to take this supplement in a low dose for 2-3 weeks and see if my hair loss decreases.

Am curious about other's experiences with biotin.

people here have recommended nutridairy to check your getting your requirments but i noticed it doesnt give a breakdown of the amino acid content of your diet as this one does....http://www.nutritiondata.com/..
as for the 1600 cal diet is that really a problem? isnt the 2000 plus requirement based on a SAD diet? im really asking here, i don´t know.

A couple of good sources of b6 are watermelon and cauliflower. This is what is so great about the dehydrator- you could make crackers with cauliflower in them for the winter and keep your vitamin level up naturally. Folic acid is in lentils and they are great as sprouts or in raw nan - made with flax and dehydrated. I blended the lentils so they wouldn't turn into little rocks and added cumin and black sesame seeds to make it look like the real nan. I love indian food. I made some at the tree one day and everyone loved it. Make a chia and mint chutney- I love that!

Here is some info on vitamins: Hair loss occurs when the diet is inadequate in the B vitamins - especially B6, biotin, inositol and folic acid; and the minerals magnesium, sulfur and zinc. The B vitamins, especially B5 (pantothenic acid and B3 (niacin), are especially important for hair growth.

Certain essential amino acids are found to control the thinning and thickening of hair in laboratory animals. For example, when rats were fed a diet deficient in magnesium, they lost their hair in bunches. The situation was even more serious with some other B-vitamins. When rats were fed a diet low in biotin or inositol, they became hairless! This nutrient-deficient condition was found to be reversible. When the rats were fed a diet that was rich in B vitamins, it resulted in the complete restoration of hair.

Heavy intake of vitamin supplements, in some cases, have resulted in stimulating hair growth. Men deficient in vitamin B6 often lose their hair. When they are deficient in folic acid, some men became completely bald! As in case of animals, when normal intake of theses vitamins were restored, the hair also returned in most instances.

Hi I just saw this on a member of this sites blog\webpage. From Here: http://roshis.com/ Here it is:
high sugar consumption is linked to baldness in both men and women

My point: Consume less sugar, flour, starch, and alcohol to prevent hair loss and baldness.

This is another example of big pharmaceutical and food industries lying and cheating to consumers, and victimizing the public. The traditional theory dealing with baldness was that it is caused by the male hormone, testosterone. Testosterone is converted to another hormone called dihydrotestosterone, which causes hair to grow darker and longer on the body, face, and sides of the head. Dihydrotestosterone also causes hair loss and baldness because it makes the hair on the top of the head lighter and thinner.

Out of all the corporations out there, Merck is probably the worst because they screw behind your back and not to your face. Scientists at Merck developed a drug called Proscar to shrink enlarged prostates by blocking the formation of dihydrotestosterone. Merck then turned around and started selling the same drug as Propecia, charging five times as much to help hair grow on bald men. Propecia is not very effective because it treats the symptoms of baldness, not the root cause.

New research shows that high blood levels of insulin may lead to male pattern baldness in which men and women lose hair from the top and front of their heads. A study from the Harvard School of Public Health shows that men who have the highest blood levels of insulin like growth factor-1 are the ones most likely to suffer male pattern baldness. Women who have high levels of insulin are the ones most likely to lose hair from the tops of their heads. It still is early in the research, but evidence is accumulating that male-pattern baldness may be caused by high levels of insulin that are produced by eating huge amounts of sugary and floured foods such as bakery products and pastas. We need more research to show if male pattern baldness can be prevented by avoiding flour and sugar. The exact mechanism by which insulin causes baldness is yet to be determined. But, my experience is that high levels of sugar destroy the body’s normal functioning processes. It makes sense to me that high sugar consumption would lead to baldness. Trust your instincts.

So, we end up with a situation where the food industry is selling us the problem (refined sugar) and the health industry is selling us a solution to the problem (Propecia). Both industries make money while the consumer ends up unhealthy and bald. Fortunately, you as a consumer can make the choice to cut out excessive consumption of sugar, starches, flour, and alcohol-all these ingredients are used too often in our food supply.

I definitely had a problem with thinning hair a few years ago when on a high raw diet. I was freaking out at the masses falling out. Things changed when I got pregnant and my hair filled in again because of prenatal vitamins and hormones. I am not taking those any more, and my hair is very thick right now. What I have changed this time around is I drink daily green smoothies. I was told by someone when you become very alkaline, your intestines do not have enough acid to absorb nutrients and what you should do is drink kale smoothies every day. I barely shed hair now, except I do notice it a little thin at my hairline (that might just be genetic). What food is biotin found in?

That is a good point Angus. I have found that a lot of fundamentalist religions accuse everyone else of worshiping the devil and it like a blind hysteria- like all these other people have a black bible in their house and secretely worship a statue...
