Give it to me Raw

Hi-
I have been high raw for 4 months, and in the last month, maybe 3 weeks, I have experienced a lot of hair loss..in the shower every day chunks of about 10-20 strands fall out...I have very thick hair, so it's not noticeable, but wonder what this is attributable to...has anyone else experienced this??? My nails are strong still, but I am wondering if this is a detox thing, or if I am eating insufficient B vitamins (hard to fathom, really) or protein (I eat about 10% protein on a 1600 calorie a day diet)...I am reading on the Mayo site that physical and or emotional changes can manifest as hair loss up to 3 months later, and I know that my detox was strong (not crazy strong, but like pimples and greasy hair and fatigue) for about 2 weeks, so perhaps this is just the aftermath of that.

Updated: okay, so i just bought a supplement for Hair Skin and Nails from the HFS...it has a bunch of vitamins in it..I took one pill, which is 1/3 the dosage they recommend, and with 20 minutes, my scalp stopped tingling. I don't know which ingredient in the pill might have helped. Perhaps the Biotin?

Anyone know raw foodies consumption of biotin? It's found in grains, eggs, and a bit in spinach, mushrooms and corn...also in legumes....Biotin is critical for hair growth etc, and this was the nutrient that the guy at my HFS suggested might be deficient for me.

I am going to take this supplement in a low dose for 2-3 weeks and see if my hair loss decreases.

Am curious about other's experiences with biotin.

no but I use all natural shampoo by Collective Wellbeing. I find I wash my hair less. About once a week and on the weekend. I love their products.

There was a post/thread on this site once about people not using shampoo. It seems after an initial getting used to period, they didn't need it, and their hair did great. You might try to find it, I'm not sure the title.

thanks!I plan on buying some msm next week and trying it out,.

I stopped shampooing my hair 4 days ago and already there is less falling out. When it feels particularly greasy I rinse it with baking soda/water mix and it's fine. It's better than I thought it would be!

Hi NYCgrrl,
I recently heard from a woman who had the same experience with hair loss and raw foods. She found out she was allergic to nuts and that was what was causing it.

Just wonderinf if you found out any more ino on this. My hair has been thinning since going raw a couple months ago too. Its thinning at a fearfully rapid rate. I'm taking b-complex and b-12 now though and trying to get more protein, hopefully it helps. I am interested to know if you found out anything though since you posted this.

Caleb, I have a sheet somewhere that Victoria Boutenko gave me that has a list of deficiencies and symptoms. I know there are a few specific for hair loss. I will try to find it for you tonight.

Hey I dont know if this is still relevant now, but I thought I would add my 2 cents anyway. On a 1600 cal diet, you are not getting anywhere near enough calories, especially since I know you are physically active. This is almost certain to mean you are not getting enough nutrients as well. You may be eating 10% protein, but what do your amino acids actually look like in relation to your individual requirements? Regardless, when we underconsume on calories, much of the protein we consume will actually be broken down for glucose, rather than used for the amino acids, which means that even if it looks like we're getting enough protein, we might not actually be getting anywhere near enough. The same goes for EFA's too. This can lead to hairloss.

Stress of course can be an issue, I remember my mum when I was younger was extremely stressed, on the verge of a breakdown, and her hair was falling out dramatically.

I woudlnt know what nutrient it was because I dont know what your actual micronutrient levels in your diet actually looked like before taking it, and also dont know what else was in the supplement.

As far as biotin goes, its likely to vary individual to individual so I dont think there would be a raw foodie consumption, as much as an individual consumption. It is very easy to get enough biotin though, but only providing you eat enough calories.

Anyway, this was a while ago so I hope the picture has changed considerably now, and that all is well :o)

Take care

Hi I have a hair supplement that has saw palmetto, horsetail, watercress, juniper, rosemary, mullein, burdock and white willow. Horestail has silica in it which is good for hair and joints, and skin.

Zinc in pumpkin seeds can help and . I've heard of biotin and it is in some shampoos. Protein is important as well.

What are EFA's?

I also taking b-complex supplement now too and it has Biotin in it. I am not sure if it is enough though to make a difference.

I take another "DHT Blocker" supplement called ShenMin. It claims to be all natural but not exactly sure what all is in it. I have only been taking it a couple months so not long enough to see results. But it has only been recently (past 2-3 weeks that the thinning has speed up considerably). I have been able to see scalp with wet hair for some time, It used to not be visible when dry, but now it is. It's likely adding unneeded stress.

Anyway, if anybody has any specific suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Caleb,

My apologies, EFA's are essential fatty acids, like omega 3 (aka, EPA/DHA or ALA) and 6 (aka LA, GLA).

Why are you taking a B complex if you dont mind me asking? B vits are so easily met on a Raw vegan diet you can easily exceed the RDA's. Do you have a confirmed deficiency or are you just taking it for the b12 or biotin? 30 mg biotin is easily sufficient.

For male hair loss, nutrient deficiency (esp. amino acids, zinc, silica and certain minerals) and heavy metal toxicity are often causes of balding. I can have a book on the subject actually that I got for my dad to read. I can have a look if you want more specific info.

Take care

That would be awesome! I'm taking the b-vits because another raw friend who is a health educator for a supplement company recommended them. (no he wasn't trying to make a sale, in face he gave me boat loads of free stuff). I thought meat was a major source of the B vitamins thus why I was taking them and I heard B deficiency can cause the hair loss and it started to thin A LOT since I started going raw. I hardly ever pulled out hairs before, I rarely saw them in my sink or in my hands after running poo through them. Now I'm always pulling out hairs and seeing them fall out.

Oh and I am taking a complex WITH Biotin in it, not separately, and a B12.

Hi family. I've been eating 100% raw for the past 40 days. Before that, I was about 70% raw for a few years, and I struggled with bulimia (purging the cooked food that I ate). No purging, no cooked food for 40 days. My cheeks are slightly puffy ...

I've heard great, great things about Living Light Culinary Arts Institute in Fort Bragg, CA. I know that isn't really in the Los Angeles area, but it's still in CA and I believe they provide students the option to stay in their 'Living Light Inn'....

The way I see it is that generally people who label themselves are confident of the path they have chosen while, also generally, people don't don't label aren't quite as sure if what they're following is the right way to go.
