Give it to me Raw

I came across this in the news today:

A 105-year-old Southampton man has revealed the secret of his longevity - a full English breakfast every morning.
Great grandfather Douglas Terrey reckons he’s eaten a fry-up every morning for 91 years - about 33,215 hearty breakfasts, reports Sky News. The retired engineer eats four rashers of bacon, a sausage, two eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, black pudding and three slices of toast each morning.
And in a nod to healthy eating, he also wolfs down a bowl of cereal. “I have been eating a fried breakfast for years and years now,” he said. “I think this kind of food is wholesome - like the food we used to have in the old days.”
Mr Terrey, of Marchwood, near Southampton, Hants, began his routine of a fry-up a day when he joined the Army as a dispatch boy, aged 13. “When I got my first job in the Army I would go to work on a good breakfast and I knew I wouldn’t get hungry,” he said.

105 years old and he's been eating this same fried concoction for the last 91 years. Seriously, WTF? Four rashers of bacon. I don't know what a rasher is but it sure doesn't sound good. Do we have it all wrong? How did this guy make it past the age of 50?

Oh, cats are great. And fish. And maybe an iguana. Or even a spouse!

My mother's new husband turned 78 today, eats 2 candy bars every day, and has the lipid profile of a 35 year old athlete. If I ate 2 candy bars every day, I'd be a diabetic with the lipid profile of a 78 year old couch potato. I'm glad there's raw food, too!

I have bad memories of the "Full English Breakfasts" I had in the UK a number of years ago- greasy poached eggs, rubbery mushrooms, broiled tomatoes and Heinz's baked beans. I skipped the bacon and black sausage! I really think that some folks have a true longevity gene. I saw a show on PBS about that, awhile back. They were studying Ashkenazic Jews, because so many of them live so long, despite diet and smoking. Some folks just have the programming. Genes aren't everything, but they are something.

1) He believes that the breakfast is healthful and doing him good.

2) These exceptions always pop up. A single case does not a randomised double blind study make. As we (in the 'alternative' health movement' ) are always being reminded by the 'scientists'.

3) There is no control group

4) Enzymes/metabolic/blood/dosha type? Perhaps if you eat his shit for years and years your body learns to process it to a degree. Also some people can probably handle meat better than others, in my opinion

5) Good stock/genes/childhood?; the veg he ate as a child was probably from his back garden. He wasn't bombarded with the same variety of chemicals as I was during his childhood, perhaps. Ditto the parents.

6) Physical exercise. Sounds like this guy has worked hard during his life and possibly had an active job? They didn't drive to the corner shop in his days, either

7) The human body is amazing.

8) Even if we do 'have it all wrong', this man's diet is unsustainable. Even if it is the healthiest diet on the planet, sorry folks. We'll all be eating plant based diets soon out of necessity anyway.

9) Chances are, his veg still does come out of the garden. Who knows?

Good luck to him, anyway.

Hi I live near this guy in southampton, although I have never met him. A rasher if bacon is just a slice of bacon. My father ate the same thing and lived until he was 90 years. when this guy was young we just did not have the chemicals ,no car here , no processed food and he probably never over eats. It sounds like he has also always done physical work.

It's nostalgia and a bit of idolatry, I spent a lot of time in that general area of the world and most of the family I'm in contact with are from that general area so if there is any disconnect with humour and culture I feel it in media :) But he...

Ya I see what you're saying. I think spirituality and raw food, in my opinion have different levels. I think some people put too much emphasis on it being itself a spiritual practice, so I'm arguing the point that down plays it, not to obsess abou...

That sounds like a good topic to discuss! Thanks Lee. I thought it would be great if raw was the final destination before ascension because I don't see people who are really into it going back to eating meat or junk food.. but maybe you meant that...
