Give it to me Raw

Hey all!
I'm trying to sprout some buckwheat groats...soaked them for about 30 minutes, put them in my sprouting bag, and have been rinsing them every 6 hours or so. Right now it's Day 2, and they don't really seem to be sprouting...it sort of looks like maaaybe they're about to, but there is definitely no obvious sign of a 'tail' or anything. I heard they're one of the fastest things to sprout, so I thought they would be ready by now...have any of you sprouted buckwheat, and if so, what were your results like?
Peace, Love, Lei.

Hi I have sprouted them a lot. Do you have hulled or unhulled. Unhulled are the black ones and the white ones are the hulled. There is a third kind that can't be sprouted it's called kashi- it is dark brown because it has been roasted.

Hey Liz,
They're hulled, and I'm quite sure they're not kasha. They're more of a light tan color than dark brown.
I'm thinking maybe I didn't rinse them enough after soaking? They seem a little sticky.
Should they have noticeable sprout growths after 2 days?
Thanks,
~Lei

Normally they do. A lot of grains do better if soaked in warm water first to get them going. A warm dark place would be good at this point. What do you have them in?

Hmmm...I've got them in a hemp sprouting bag. Maybe I should start a new batch, using warm water. Right now the ones I've got are kind of cold and soggy.
What are your other typical buckwheat sprouting methods?

The white ones work well in a jar or the bag but the hulled ones would work great on a flat surface like a plastic flat, cookie sheet, or glass baking dish. After the initial soaking you only have to lightly mist. Something weighing a top cover down works well like a smaller pan with a couple rocks on it. The best way to do buckwheat if you want 2 inch high sprouts is to put a layer of soil and inch or two deep on the bottom of the flat and then put a thin layer of seeds on that. Then you cut with a big knife in a scyth like fashion or just use scissors to harvest. If you put some seaweed in a spray bottle that gives them some nourishment when you mist them. The main problem when using a sprout bag is your sprouts won't grow straight and if you have too many in the bag they are more likely to rot. Yours should be perfect for planting at this point so I wouldn't throw them out. They should take about 10 days from this point. Final step- Send them loving energy!

i soak mine overnight (min 12 hours) in water, then rinse & spread out in a large collander.
i rinse them 2 x days for 2-3 days, until they are sprouted.
then dehydrate..

Thanks to you both! I'll do some more experimenting.
My goal is to dehydrate them with some cinnamon, nuts and fruits and make a granola, then top it off with some banana milk....mmmmmm.....

buckwheat goats wont sprout because they have been "chopped" up. I've tried sprouting them many times with no luck.

I had problems when sprouting groats in my spout bag. I tried soaking overnight and then leaving them in a wide glass bowl. I rinse every 6 hours or so until they sprout. This seems to be a no fail method. Love the idea of dehydrating them with some cinnamon, nuts and fruits to make a granola....I will have try this:)

Good Luck,

i tend to just soak them, they get soft pretty quickly, then i just eat them or dehydrate them..

are you aware that buckwheat causes photosensitivity? it has toxins in it that cause reactions when you subathe, fruit is good food

IFor breakfast, I have 1/3 of a cup of hulled buckwheat soaked overnight. I get my groats from the bulk section at the Hendersonville Co-op I wanted to see if they were truely raw once by sprouting them. I just let them sit overnight in water and drained it the next day. I gave them a small bit of water to sit in and washed them out a couple times. I think they started to sprout in 2 days (a "tail" will come from the tip of the groat). I just have a jar or glass cup to soak them in; I've never used a hemp soaking bag before. This article mentions sprouting buckwheat, but says you can only soak them for 20 minutes or else they will spoil. My experience says that that is false, because I eat them soaked overnight for breakfast, and have sprouted them after an overnight soak. It does talk about the color it should be and mention a few other things.

Good luck :-).
