Give it to me Raw

Baby =]

People getting sick on raw food? -Link-, we should write in to the paper ;);)...

So my parents made me read this article in a news paper. It was about a family on a raw vegan diet, and the chicks kids had gotten holes in their teeth and were stick thin...and they all craved dairy.

So it looks like raw made them ill.

They ate loads of fruit, veg and seeds and took b12 and d supplements, yet they were sick....

I can't find an expination for my parents, I can't even find one to give to myself...

Can anyone brain storm on why they were so sick?

thanks <3

Wow, I'm so mad about this, great idea about writing in Chris, I am off to do that. Please join me! I really think people need to know about how amazing raw food is, we should be getting this out to as many people as possible.

Thanks for the replies gang!

had lots!!!!!!
yes i saw this too and it made me a little upset...
here's the story
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-wellbeing/health...

it doesn't actually say what their diet was, only that they had rotten teeth and we're thin-so how about better dental hygiene and more food? Especially as her daughter ''who had never had butter in her life, would grab the packet and gnaw into it," sounds like she's just hungry , poor little lamb.
The article goes on to say that the mother thinks it was vitamin d and protein deficiency but when ''she took Lizzie and Bertie to her health visitor, she didn't seem too concerned. "She said they were in the low percentile, but thought they were OK''

hahaha, so even the health visitor said they were fine!!
I think that this is just typical lazy journalism. Take a subject, demonise and sensationalise it and get brownie points for getting your article noticed/talked about.
It ends by saying that the families diet is still mainly raw...
I think you should talk to your parents about not blindly accepting everything that they read just because it confirms their own view point.
Something i should learn to do too! ;-)
Don't worry though Meao. I'm 42 in a couple of days and whenever i see my mum she always asks if I'm still on that silly diet!

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident." ~Arthur Schopenhauer

Good Luck!!
Do your parents really believe that newspaper articles are a useful source of dietary information?

Unfortunately some raw foodists read a few dubious books, attend the odd talk and then think they are qualified to plan a diet. This is their dillusion.

There are examples of healthy raw vegans; you will see The Garden Diet family, A T Hovannessians daughter, and some of the members here and elsewhere. It can be done, but requires the right information, the right food and planning - and that is quite a challenge.

You have to ask yourself if you can meet the challenge.
Here is the 'what we eat' page of the mothers blog

http://www.rawcuisine.co.uk/ideas-about-food/what-we-eat/

Although it doesn't say what the family ate before introducing animal products. She says that the article was a fair representation, but does acknowlege that some people thrive on a raw vegan diet. I put this here for educational purposes, so please no one be abusive.

Wow.
Well, no one can say that she's inexperienced about raw food or that she doesn't know what she's doing...thanks for posting that Hayley.
You're welcome. I certainly found it interesting- as you noted, the blog indicates that she is knowledgeable about raw food. However, there is still nothing scientific about the article or the assesments made of the children.
I also saw this article to and was very alarmed when I saw it was aggregated by give it to me raw, as a lot of her post are. She also had another post about protein which made me want to just lose it. I have a nine year old daughter who thrives on a raw diet and we practically eat the same things on her food list. Except that we don't eat anything high in starch and we surely don't partake in any blood. I love that this thread has been presented because it leaves me a chance to ask a question I have always wanted to know. Me and my family live in GA where it's quiet easy to be comfortable on a raw/living foods diet (I hate that word diet but we will use it here). Do people who live in the UK and abroad where sun light and what seems to me hard to get organic fresh foods find it hard to thrive on living foods? Where as in the past history has shown that most Europeans ate meat and eggs due to the fierce weather and lack of vegetation.

Side Bar: I have notice that people take these discussion way to hard sometimes I only post this question as to be able to understand the larger picture of why people would actually eat raw meat and eggs etc.
Like any other diet or lifestyle you have to do THE RESEARCH and know what you are doing I would say 90% of people are not doing raw right. I call it random raw, they just assume because it is raw and organic it "MUST BE GOOD FOR YOU!" well WRONG! You still have to keep it low sugar, low glycemic! This means not loading everything up with high fruits, dates, honey, etc. also avoiding certain ingredients but I will let the EXPERT explain it Dr. Gabriel Cousens MD, if you read his Conscious Eating and The Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine you will know EVERYTHING and HOW TO DO RAW RIGHT AND CORRECTLY! He is a RAW Doctor and 100% Raw and he is the perfect picture of health! He is 64+ and looks 40 something, he keeps it VERY LOW SUGAR to low glycemic, this is one of the RAW SECRETS of anti-aging, rejuvenating, etc. if you are eating high sugar and not knowing it then yes your teeth can rot even though raw organic and your pancreas is being way over taxed and having to tax your system by producting more insulin too...

So right now people are assuming way too much and not doing the research, also no one ever said you had to be 100% RAW, this is a choice or natural transition, it is not a MUST or mandatory! Gabriel Cousens MD says for most people 80% RAW Organic and 20% Organic lightly cooked is the most optimal.

So do the research and read folks! It is sad to see a bad story or a few bad cases, for the most part RAW Organic is mostly success stories but there will be some bad ones or people who are assuming things and that is always a bad idea to not do all the research!

That is why in my book RAW IN TEN MINUTES I use Agave which is VERY Low sugar and low glycemic, and I researched ALL of my recipes too, I based them all on Gabriel's research, advice, recommendations so my recipes will actually benefit you, alkalize you, give you more energy, is the most optimal yet simple, fun, delicious and easy too! I am coming out with a new 3rd Edition all new raw organic recipe book in a few months that is gourmet and amazing but very easy, under 10 minutes, no dehydrating and RAWlicious!:) And correct raw...

hmmmmm okay
During my 100% raw period I went to Malaysia for 5 weeks. I ate fruitarian (with occassional nuts/seeds) just about the whole time. We ate heaps of durians many direct from rainforests, and also jackfruits, chempedak and other unusual fruits. We had the odd salad as well.

We climbed to the top of Mt. Kinabalu (13,000 feet) and also did a pretty good trek into the depths of the Sarawak rainforest.

Tropical fruit rocks! People who diss it are not in touch with their body.
Oh goodness Suvine, that really got me laughing, 'All i want is a mango!!' hilarious, thank you ;)
i have to say, i have 2 boys 6 and 3 and i feed them about 30-40% raw and the rest cooked vegan, grain, beans, and a bit of dairy (!!) and they are both super slim but super healthy. no cavities, no health issues at all, and huge amounts of energy. They don't love veggies enough to eat sufficient amounts of them to get the nutrition they need from them. IMO, children need certain levels of minerals, vitamins, protein etc and if they don't eat sufficient veggies and fruits to get them, then they need to eat other foods. My children would never eat a pound of spinach. i am lucky if I can get them to eat a few leaves in their smoothie!
