Give it to me Raw

I'm sure this gets asked a lot over and over and over. But im rather new to the raw lifestyle. I've been doing my reasearch, and its seems that green smoothies pop up everywhere. And after making one of them...i love it. The only down fall is...i don't have any super foods. I'm going to buy Cacao nibs, Pure synergy for spirulina and all that green stuff. oh and goji berries. But I don't know what else to add...i hear some people add hemp seeds (which im purchasing). But i don't know wheather to choose..Maca, Camu, or Yacon? I heard that if you have to much Maca it does...does this from what wikipedia says...

However, maca does contain glucosinolates, which can cause goitres when high consumption is combined with a diet low in iodine. Though this is common in other foods with high levels of glucosinolate, it is uncertain if maca consumption can cause or worsen a goitre.

I got a little scared away from buying Maca b/c of this....any ideas?....

Not having superfoods is definitely not a downfall. It's not essential to have superfoods while eating raw. They are just a luxeery that some people chose to integrate into their diet. I chose not to have them regularly since they travel such a far distance to get to me. Doesn't seem like there could be much life force left in them after seeing so many trucks and machinery.

Breanna,

Why don't travel to the soupafoodz?

Rawzi, you have a good point with growing/fermenting your own food. I personally think sprouts are the real superfoods- they're fresh as it gets and FULL of life.

However, I would not suggest buckwheat greens. They are toxic, as they contain large amounts of fagopyrin, a chemical that leads to serious phototoxicity if ingested in sufficient quantity. The groats themselves, and the very young sprouts, are not a problem because they don't contain much fagopyrin, but if you grow them into greens, it can be problematic.
Maybe you meant just sprouting them anyway, but I would hate for anyone to get sick so I thought I should just put that out there.

As far as maca, don't buy it if it worries you. Like Breanna, I don't include them on a regular basis because they take a pretty far journey to get to me. I also have a sneaking suspicion they're better for the people who sell them than for the people who buy them (I know, cynical...). Anyway, I feel great without them!

Hi Annie,
While it's true that ingesting large quantities of Buckwheat lettuce can cause photosensitivity, most people are not sensitive to moderate amounts. Buckwheat lettuce is very healthy in small quantities as It contains rutin, a bioflavinoid not found in beans or grains, that can help strengthen blood vessels.
I think that as with most things in life, moderation is key.
And another thing about Maca is that it should never be ingested by anyone at risk for hormone sensitive cancers such as breast, endometrial, or prostate due to it's hormonal influences.

Maca doesn't contain direct hormonal compounds, like soy or red clover. It works indirectly on hormones by balancing the adrenal/ thyroid/ pituitary axisis. It's also in the Brassica family of plants, which have estrogen reducing qualities.

Erin, is that St. Francis of pituitary axisis? Just wondering.

Hi Erin,

I always wondered why Mica doesn't change her name to Maca.

hey emilia,
looks like this discussion lived last year, but incase you're still in touch with it....I also believe sprouts are the real 'super food' if there is such a thing..... (other than in a commercial world haha.... ;-) if you think about it, they're preparing to kick start the life of a plant so it makes sense they are extrmely nurtrient rich, full of consciousness and alive and raw as it gets. They also don't cost the earth, easy to grow - i.e. soak lentils, or whatever.. overnight, drain in the morning (rinse each day afterward to keep them alive) and hey presto you've got one of the best additions to a green shake :)

i don't shun all superfoods, but i find that maca is expensive and tastes pretty bad to me, and does nothing that it "promises"...i had no more energy than i did without it. i tried it every day for over a month, and nothing...
i love wheatgrass as an energizer! not really categorized as one of the "superfoods" i guess, but you can try to grow your own and i have had more success with it than anything else. fresh is best, but i also use Greener Grasses powder.

thanks for the maca info, also. i have autoimmune thyroid disease and avoid ALL goitrogenic foods...which is hard on raw...but i had NO IDEA that maca caused this problem. odd, since usually i know "too much" about which foods aggravate thyroid...

I use maca, though not in my smoothies- it doesn't taste good that way. I mix it into nutmilk. Maca is actually very good for the endocrine system, including the thyroid. I wouldn't worry about the goiter thing- just because something has one compound doesn't mean it's bad. It may have ten other compounds that offset the effects of the one. Non-menopausal women should only take 1/2 tsp. per day, according to www.macadata.com . There's no reason to use it unless you have an endocrine imbalance or are trying to improve hormone balance and fertility.

I've tried using maca and have not noticed any difference in energy and it tastes and smells disgusting/ Gave it up in end I guess different things suit different people. Lucuma mixed with cacao nibs tastes heavenly (to me anyway) so started adding that to chocolate and deserts!

Soft rock is soft, not driving rock, but soft gushy love songs, romantic, smooth..stuff you are embarrassed to admit you like. Stuff that makes you imagine you are swimming with sea horses, or hanging out on a rainbow with your love.

Did you just blend banana and vanilla? I made ice cream with banana and cacao nibs... it was really good.

Only because Suvine asked me to. I have almost no idea what qualifies as soft rock, but if most of the music here is any indication, that's probably because I don't actually like soft rock. For the most part. Does Queen qualify as soft rock? I ha...
