Give it to me Raw

I have been about 80% raw since June this year, when started I weighed 7st 3, but it has now dropped to 6st 12, has anyone else experienced this?
Has any one any ideas as to how I can gain the weight lost, recipies, sample menu for a day etc, I eat seeds , oils nuts, & cacao treats coconut, etc.

I really need to gain some weight as I have oestoprosis, cause by a decade of EDs, been recovered for three years now!

Would so appreciate any help

hi julie! add more "greens" (kale, spinach, etc) in your daily diet - and drink green smoothies. check out vitoria boutenko's "green for life" book. i just saw her speak. very insightful and well-researched. :) will help you with the weight, the osteoporosis and more. cheers!

Yes, awhile back I read that in order to gain weight on raw you must eat greens AND exercise.

Here's something I just found:

In The Sunfood Diet Success System, David Wolfe says "the secret to gaining strength and weight by eating raw plant-food diet is to eat green-leafed veggies and plant fats together--and fewer sweet fruits--as well as by adding superfoods (spirulina, raw hemp protein, maca, etc.) into one's diet. More non-sweet fruits may be included as well. Consuming these foods in a blended state is recommended...Raw plant fats are "fatty." They are heavy and of course help with weight gain. They will put just the right amount of fat on your body to give you excellent proportions and a good shape. They also add weight indirectly by providing fuel for working the muscles to build muscle mass. However, eating more fats alone will not cause weight gain, greens must be added. Fats help the body assimilate the amino acids and minerals from greens."

Here's his personal salad formula for gaining weight: 1.tomatoes (non-sweet fruits with a high water-content) 2. macadamia nuts (high-fat nuts) 3. kale leaves (dense in minerals, amino acids, and protein). David: "This type of salad combination and eating style, in conjunction with vigorous excercise, helped me gain 18 pounds (8.2 kg) and reach 168 pounds (76 kg) in a span of two years while maintaining my all-raw diet and a body-fat level of 9.4%. I am 6 feet tall (190cm)...Another good weight gain combination I have enjoyed is eating avocados with Nature's First Law [his website] olives and chasing them with green juice...People who are of an ayurvedic vata constitution (typically a person who tends to be thin already) will find great weight gain value in blending smoothies and salads to create soups. Blending food adds more caloric value and increases the mineral density of foods, both of which have a balancing effect for a vata constitution."

He also says that the more often we eat, the quicker our metabolism runs, and the more weight we will lose. Avoiding frequent snacking holds the value of slowing our metabolism and allowing us to increase our weight.

Thanks for bring this up because my fiance needs to gain weight and I think he's a bit worried about going 100% Raw because of seeing how much weight is lost when you do.

Hi Pete what you said makes real sense, What is a Microbial infection? can Candida fall under that category? as I had Candidia of the gut a while back, have just started bringing back some dried fruits, & fats, as I was actually losing so much weight on the candida diet. I find what you are saying very interesting, I am so interested in health & healing, I just wish I could help myself! I do eat alot of Garlic with my meals, Onions, Have a probiotic daily, & I am currantly on Dida tables nearly finished the course now. I am not 100% raw I do still eat some cooked like puff buckwheat cereal with seeds, gojis etc, some times a gluten free wallaby treat, Home made Vegan burgers, & rice bran.

How long have you been eating Raw?
Cheers for your help Pete

Julie - you're eating all of the yummy stuff!! :-)

Losing weight is a result of excess consumption of lipase - the enzyme that breaks down fats. Raw nuts, seeds, butters, and coconuts all have quite a bit of lipase in them, so a reduction of this type of foods is necessary.

More complete protein sources like leafy greens (spinach, kale, chard etc.) are a sound start, and other protein sources like guava and figs will also help as well.

Good luck!

Ian

Cheers Pete for your reply, am grateful for any help or info you can give me, I do actually think some thing is still not right with my gut at mo, it seems like things have slowed down of late! no matter how much fibre I am having. I did at one stage have other symptoms of candidia else where, had dandruff for first time in my life & acne was bad, headache where constant.
I do try and keep my Immune system as strong as I can, but as you know it can be hard, with some stresses of life, I have plenty of vitiminC, Echinacea in winter, I excercize daily. There must be some thing I'm doing wrong weather it be diet or life style as I do still feel out of balance if you Know what I mean? If I feel good & everything is working right then I know things are going well.
This is what I ate yesterday:

Juiced up carrot, ginger & spiralina

Break, Puff buckwheat, gojis, coconut, golden linseeds, 1tsp linseed oil,
Almond Milk, bee pollen.

raw carob treat
half yellow pepper, pumpkin butter sprinked Cayanne

Raw Vegan omega bar

Apple

Salad: Mix green salad, pulp from juice in morning, Nori, tomatos, Raw home made tom sauce,
1tsp linseed oil, pumpkin seeds.

Blueberries

Tea Lenal Burger, Peas, Asparagus

Raw carb treat

Pure fruit wallaby bar

150ml prune juice

Rice bran wth home made butter nut squash toppping.

I have 2 litres of water a day, And I still take suppliment that I really want to come off
1 1000mg vit C 1 pobiotic, 1 kardels bone formular, 1 glucosamine, 1dida, Higher nature muti vit & min, 1 echinacea,

Just thouht I would show you what i usually have, although it does vary day to day, as I rotate foods.

Cheers Pete!

Don't know if this has been covered in a reply yet, but - - -
All my years of raw I have found food doesn't put weight on properly for me no matter what I do. More fats doesn't help, higher calories doesn't help, etc., etc. The only thing that has helped me keep a good weight has been exercise. Not aerobic or yoga, even those are very beneficial, but "Resistance" or strength exercises is my key along with eating adequately for it. Go easy on exercise that burn calories unless you eat to compensate for it.

This as simple as it sounds works for me. Trying to gain weight through food as a SAD eater would do I feel is not for long term sustaining on raw foods.

I'm not sure why you feel you "have" to gain weight though. Is that a thought or someone told you or you don't feel well?? I'm not familiar with the figures you gave.

My best advice is to contact a RAW professional, such as a Dr. Graham for example, and simply ask them for piece of mind if you have health concerns.

Cheers tanawana for your reply, a few reasons why I want to gain a little weight is, I have hip dysplasia, when I have moer muscel around my hips it feel more spported, as being this weight it feels like they will dyslocate easy, the ache more especially in the cold damp weath, & have hardly any meat so to speak arond there. My hubby and I are also thinking of having children, I also need to have some weight on for a baby too. I some times do get tired quickly, which makes me feel quite ill sometimes, but I don't know if that is too do with me getting up at 5.45am and going bed about 10pm, I am always on the go!
