Give it to me Raw

Have a coconut shake every day. It's God's perfect food. Besides the incredibly amazing experience one can have when eating coconuts, there are many other reasons to eat this wonderful delicacy! Young Coconut water is a great blood purifier. The coconut itself is a natural water filter that takes about 9 months to filter each quart of water through its many fibers. It then remains sterile in the nut. The water is identical to human blood plasma. Plasma makes up 55% of human blood and has been actually used to save lives by UV in place of available blood plasma! It is said that by drinking coconut water it is like giving ourselves an instant blood transfusion.

Young coconut water is very high in electrolytes, and a much healthier alternative to the popular electrolyte drinks on the market today In a way, coconut water is more hydrating then water!

Young Coconut meat is full of essential fatty acids and has an amazing ability to rejuvinate the skin and body by restoring oxidative tissue damage. It also can aid in increasing sexual health and potency.

Where can I find Young Coconuts?
Young Coconuts are usually imported from Thailand. The best place to find them are in Asian Markets. Some Supermarkets(and most Whole Foods Markets) often carry them. If you don't see them you can try asking the produce manager if they can order them for you.Young coconuts are white in color since the outer husk has already been removed. The sides are cylindrical on the edges and the top is cone-like. In some markets they will be wrapped in plastic.Always check the coconut carefully for mold or moisture which would indicate the coconut is spoiled.

How do I open young coconuts?
If you just want the coconut water you can poke a hole in the top with a sharp (inexpensive) knife until you have a hole big enough with a straw. Of course, I made this sound much easier then it actually is. It takes alot of poking and a little persistence. Remember - its worth it! If you want the meat as well, you basically need an inexpensive cleaver or chef's knife to open the coconut. IMPORTANT: PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN OPENING YOUR COCONUT!!!!!! Make sure the coconut is on a clutter free, flat surface. Turn it on its side. Carefully and forcefully lop off the sloped top with the bottom edge of your cleaver. You can now pour out the water. You will need a strong spoon with a thick handle to scoop out the meat.

Young Coconut Smoothie - Yum!
To eat the young coconuts is to blend the water and meat of the young coconut into a smoothie. You may want to add vanilla or even a dash of organic lime juice. Adding organic blueberries would be an excellent way to add some antioxidants to your diet. A great refreshing drink is just the coconut water, The water is very high in electrolytes, and a much healthier alternative to the popular electrolyte drinks on the market today

Why are young coconuts one of the best "beauty foods"?
Water rich fats, such as coconuts, avocados, and durians are, in our opinion, excellent for your skin Our body is 70%+ water, and I believe its important to eat things that have a high water content. You will find you need to drink less water when you switch to a raw food diet though I still recommend you drink at least 2 liters of low mineral content water per day.

I don't like eating young coconuts. They are amazing, fun and they taste like heaven but I don't need them. If ever I visit somewhere that they grow, then I can have one. They have too big of a carbon footprint otherwise. Plus, what good is eating it after it's been on a truck/boat for weeks?
I'll probably still get one as a treat every once in a great while, but they definitely aren't something I want to buy all the time.

I've read that the imported coconuts don't taste the same, or even have the same nutrients due to the irradiations they go through to get into the US. So yeah, I try to go with using coconut products that were packaged in the place that the coconuts were picked, so these products don't have the same processing.

Don't you guys have Dr Martins coco water over there?

I fine that they are not shaved in the UK and only the top dipped in wax, so they are still all green. I bought one today and Im planning a coconut and date smoothie after my exercise this afternoon.

I live in Florida so I get my coconuts from my friend whenever she goes home for the weekend. She has a few trees growing in her yard! (I'm going home with her this weekend. Can't wait to pick some for myself!)

Any suggestions about how to open the coconuts with the green husks still intact? I spend about half an hour with a hammer dessicating the outside enough to rip it off with my hands.....

It's still worth it since they're free though!

Thanks for posting the info!

I eat a lot of local green cocos too, you need either a tool made for this, for example http://www.metalcoco.com.br/central.htm (mine is much cheaper.....)
If you don't have this a power drill with a long bit works just fine, drill several holes so the liquid leaves easily. And I use a skil saw to cut it open if I want the meat. as i've said before, any excuse for buying more power tools is a good excuse.
that said, i don't buy so many b/c the trash issue- they don't break down easily and most places here don't have processing programs for the coconut husks (only Rio, from what I know).

It seemed like 20 hands reached out for a piece of the young coconut all at once. I wanted to save it to share at the raw vegan pot luck.

Ani Phyo would be good, given your ingredients. I like Ani Phyo's Raw Kitchen. Her stuff is very sweet and heavy, though, IMHO.
