Give it to me Raw

I've been experimenting with various superfoods. After 3 plus years raw I thought I should see what the fuss is all about.
So I love the algaes, and a couple of other things which have made me feel great. But then there's Maca...now I always thought that should be The One for me because I used to have a hormone inbalance which has been healing since I went raw, and I know maca's supposed to be great for that. So I tried it, I put it in some orange juice and just chugged it down, I retched straight away, but I managed to keep it down. Then after a couple of hours of what felt like sea sickness I threw up violently everywhere. This was hours ago and I still feel pretty rotten.
Has anyone else had this kind of reaction with maca? I had 2 tablespoons of organic maca whch I got off Shazzie's website.

I see that they say their herbs go through the regular drying processes. Does that mean at low temperatures compatible with raw. It seems that many raw foodists take for granted that herbs, and dried products are compatible to a raw diet, which is fine if it is true. But I have not heard that this is true.
I had to work up to my current dosage of maca (1 tbsp/ day). I recommend it though....it gives me all kinds of energy while also calming me down (strangely enough)...and has definitely increased my sex drive..! Try Navitas; their products are pretty consistent. I also recommend mixing it with cacao - that really neutralizes the "chalkiness" factor. I would try 2 tbsp cacao powder with half tbsp maca in a smoothie with blueberries, coconut water, and some acai and/or goji berries. Hope this helps!
We tried some at the Greenfest a couple of weeks ago, I had a euphoric experience. For about 1/2 an hour I felt like I was flooting, my husband had the same experience. We bought some but I haven't been adventurous enough to use it! Thanks to everyone for all the great tips.
I am training for a half marathon and I added some Maca to my pre run smoothie before heading out. This was my first time really trying maca and also my first time attempting a long run, so I don't have a whole lot of history with it, but I completed 9.5 miles which dwarfed my previous long of 5.

I was able to keep a great pace, think really clearly and felt great. I plan on having my second trial with it later this week or maybe this weekend.
Hi!
I started using Maca when a couple of months ago to help me through a particular tough place in my perimenopause when my sex drive , which is usually very present went totally awol! Maca really helped, but my experience was that as soon as I felt that the imbalance had been corrected I needed to stop using it. It gave me an energy then that I didn't feel comfortable with. I haven't needed it since but am open to the possibility that if I do, I'll use it again. I had the sad misfortune of biting into one of my pills once...yuck. So I just used the tablet form and drank tons of fresh water to wash it down. Two tablespoons does seem like quite alot, maybe a slow build up would be better, or maybe try the tablet form like I did, The bottle said to take three a day, I took one and a half and that was plenty :)
I'm not big on it myself and I can only use it in the winter time as it has a slight heating effect. If you try smaller amounts of it your body may adjust to it otherwise Suma might be a better alternative. It doesn't suit everyone as our bodies are all unique in our own little ways and at different stages of health!
maybe it was just the mixture... don't think maca would mix well with orange juice !
it goes better with more creamy and thick mixtures....
try it with an nut milk and honey
Best, SCC
well, a lovely person sent me some better quality maca. It smelled very different but I couldn't eat it...the memory of throwing up like that was still too strong, and even though it smelled different there was no chance of getting it near my mouth.
So me and maca are done, for the time being.
I read that ginseng can cause effects like coffee with the adrenal system, and I wonder where all this gung ho, inspiration comes from for maca, and whether it is really a beneficial product. I have also heard that chocolate is not healthy, even if it is raw? I also wonder about products that are dried, the process of drying is usually at temps not compatible with raw, such as regular drying of herbs and tea. And even if it is taking and spraying to dry raw juice plant extracts, it is one of oxidation and lowerment of nutritional value. I had a cousin that thought raw powdered barley juice and a macrobiotic diet would cure his cancer, he died. I read that processing things even without heat, causes a reduction of nutritional value, so why are these dried products called - Super foods? Really I am very curious and concerned for raw foodists. I think juicing and preparing fresh food, and sprouting is far superior, but do really think that the quality of the soil that food is grown on- needs to be taken much more seriously, by growers and consumers.
I agree with your concerns Joy. I decided to experiment with superfoods to see for myself if my suspicions about them were true or not. So far, I love the algaes but other things seem to mess my body up...the experiment continues, but without the maca!
Just wanted to share my maca recipe, this is the only way I can drink it and this is my breakfast drink everyday.

In a blender I put about a cup of almond milk, 1 tsp maca, one tbsp of Cacao powder, tbsp coconut oil and some bee pollen. blend and drink. The cacao powder seems to really hide the maca taste. If I put maca in anything else I cannot stand it.

I'd like to add that I don't seem to notice anything different when drinking it. i am curious what others notice when taking the maca or maybe I should be increasing my amount??
i cant believe no one feels the sexual power in this plant. finally my girlfriend went from saying "baby you cant keep up with me" to "oh no im all sexed out!"

Well we are not early man. Sitting on the computer typeing isn't natural. Not sure what being natural has to do with working out. Jumping rope at a moderate pace seems okay for someone out of shape or for a warm up. If you want it to be an effect...
