Give it to me Raw

I am not a ballerina, but I would love some fitness advice from a Ballerina.

I am currently taking Yoga and Pilates 2 times a week. Yoga makes my arms and shoulders very strong, and Pilates works the core. I don't seem to get any benifit for my legs. Dancers have great legs, and I know there have got to be some great ballett exercises that could work my legs. Especially the calf muscles.

Any tips?

Thanks ahead of time:)

Hi Loli,

It would be a good idea to try to find a local class if you can, lots of places do adults beginner classes now, there are loads of great exercises that you can do at the 'barre', but they can be dangerous if you don't do them correctly - I've known people dislocate their knee from a badly positioned plie...with that health warning given I will also say....check out youtube, type in 'ballet exercise' and you can pull out a whole load of 'classes' that you can watch and 'dance' along to.

The simplest thing to do is walk around on your tip toes as often as possible (barefoot or soft shoes), that'll build up your calf muscles!

Happy rond de jambe a l'air's! (when you start doing THAT you'll get great thighs!)

Much love xxx

I'd feel a bit silly taking adult ballet... but I guess it's worth a try:) Thank you for helping a girl out!

Everyone will feel silly in an adult class. You wouldn't have to worry about being the only one not knowing what to do, considering it would be a beginners class.... I have been dying to take a ballet class, but the only beginners' classes around here are for little kids :( Don't they realize that grown-ups want to pirouette in pink tights???!!

Well I wish for my sake you lived near me and we could go together:)

Go on...take a class! It will be fun! I been dancing since I was 2.. ballet is very good for leg and core definition I have found anyways.

That dvd is good.. however nothing beats taking a class :)

Have fun!! xx

You should totally go to a class...it will be so much more fun then doing it by yourself! But if you don't want to go to a class then you can do plies and releves to work your calves...really anything where you are up on the ball of your foot. Start by doing like 8 releves in 1-5th position and then on one leg at a time and slowly build up. The New York City Ballet Workout is great to...its a really good workout and it targets everything

I know ;)
I think I'll start with your suggestions on plies and releves. I would feel kind of funny being a 35 yr old beginer in ballet. Like I said I love yoga, but I know the principals of ballet are a wonderful way to keep a body strong and healthy. I took ballet from 3 to 5 and then jazz until I was 14, but barley remember anything from class. LOL Do you also do specific streatching to prevent injury?

Thanks so much for the info:)

I wish my parents made me stick with ballet. I love to dance and think I would have been pretty good. That's so cool you take karate. I love the dicipline and confidence one gains.

Hey Michele! We fast 8-10 people per year for 6 weeks and most of them have amazing experiences. Incidentally, though some people imagine there's a need to "work up" to a long fast like this, many are fasting this long for the first time; in fact,...
