Give it to me Raw

well, being that i'm a growing 16 year old, my mom is getting increasingly concerned with my calcium sources. i'm not fully raw yet, but i'm slowly getting into it, so i'm trying to get all my main nutrients from raw sources, so if any of y'all can share where you primarily get your calcium from, that'd be great! thanks a ton.

keep smiling,

Dark leafy vegetables are a good source of calcium.

read some books, educate yourself. there are many super amazing teachers out there. it's definitely not going to come from calcium supplements. green leafy vegetables is a great source.

According to an article by Stephen Walsh, PhD titled Diet and Bone Health. Calcium needs are driven by how much salt, over-consumption of protein, and low potassium consumption.

Since you're still growing into an adult body your needs may be different.

Green leafy veggies are high in calcium, sesame seeds. Some plant foods may seem low in calcium content, but they have a beneficial effect of slowing down calcium losses...... so there is a net gain when compared to animal products like milk.

thanks a lot for that last bit. i didn't really understand how green leafy vegetables had enough calcium for the body because i did research regarding the amounts of calcium in many different vegetables, and although some of them did have relatively high amounts (around 100mg, which is high compared to other vegetables), milk and calcium-enriched orange juice had a lot more calcium (about 300mg per serving). i guess the body's absorption of the calcium makes a huge difference

I think it works like this: If you drink milk, your body will create more acid because of the high protein content. To neutralize that acid, it needs something to buffer it... so it will pull calcium from your bones. I think that's partly what Uti means when he says you get a "net gain" by getting your calcium from greens. You're not producing all that acid to deal with the excess milk protein, so your body doesn't have to deplete its own stores of calcium.

Thanks for the ammo for my own family when they question my "nutritional needs". Like they know anything about nutrition! The other day, as I ate my salad, I watched my dad make a meal on chilidogs and pepsi, while my mom mad her lunch out of a hot cocoa and a mini bag of peanuts. SAD, much? Then they ask, "Where do you get your protein and calcium?"

Wow... that would be funny if it weren't so true and sad...

We live in a world of misguided fools thanks to advertising's mind control.

Personally I have never found any benefit in preaching to deaf ears, especially my family. It only creates separation and makes them feel like I'm judging them. Now that's not saying that I don't let them know I could share some improvements in their diet. So far no takers. My sister had the radical stomach by-pass surgery (irreversible) in hopes of losing weight. And my brother in law had both knee joints replaced with no benefit in mobility and comfort He's in his early 50's.

It's interesting that I told my b-i-l I knew how he could heal the pain in his knees which I saw as sourcing in his hips and lower back, but in the end surgery promised instant results. Now he has miserable lower back pain.

These 2 elective surgeries that I mentioned both had extremely detailed sales packages that avoided talking about the negative side effects in anything other than a brief mention to handle liability claims.

My son and daughter in law think that giving their kids milk is a 'good thing' because they think there is all this calcium. Unfortunately, they tune me out, so I know how you feel!

Victoria Boutenko wrote in her book, 12 Steps to Raw Foods, that sesame seed milk is very high in calcium. In her book she says ".. you've all seen the the ads that say "Got Milk?" should say "Got wheat grass?" or "Got Sesame Seed Milk?" Cow's milk is not intended for human consumption; it does have calcium, but it also contains very concentrated protein and produces excessive mucus. Also, pasteurized milk has been heated until the enzyme activity has stopped. The enzymes are destroyed; there is no life. The body only absorbs empty shells of calcium molecules."

Wheat grass is where a cow gets her calcium and is easily digested by the human body because the molecule of chlorophyll and the molecule of human blood are almost identical.
Sesame seeds are the richest in calcium among all other seeds and nuts. Sesame seed milk is delicious and can easily replace cow's milk.

I personally never realized that sesame seeds were so high in calcium, and have been making sesame seed milk after learning about this. It is really tasty, maybe sweeten a little with agave, or raw honey, and a dash of sea salt. Sometimes I put a vanilla bean, or pure vanilla extract in the milk too.

It's important for children and teens, and pregnant and menopausal women to obtain enough calcium. But as 'rawbydefault' said above, the less animal protein you are consuming the less protein is being leached out of your bones. A good book to read on this topic is The China Study. Excellent information.

Good luck with your family. It's not easy to put up with the ridicule. What worked for me was I would prepare my raw meal, and my husband would cook his meals. Soon, he was tasting my preparations and actually ended up eating more raw food, and less cooked meals. He began to notice a big difference in his energy levels, plus he lost weight! Download Shelly's book: Dying To Get Well (dyingtogetwell.com) and let them read it. That should open up their eyes!!

Hey Ankit! Looks like you got what you needed from the group : )

I second reading "The China Study." In fact, I think that should be required reading for every high school graduate. Imagine what the world would be like if everyone was educated with facts instead of advertising.

I believe that the natural state of the body is health, and that it is always trying to get 'there'. This thread makes me think of "The Right Use of Will" series by Ceanne DeRohan. Anybody ever read any of those books? If you have, message me......
