almost everything i make in my dehydrator needs to be processed somehow, so i use both the blender and my dehydrator together mostly.
if you have a decent blender or a food processor, and enjoy "cooking" and planning meals (days in advance), i would recommend the dehydrator.
i did not buy the vitamix, i was skeptical of all the hype, and am satisfied with my cheaper blender.
however, i aquired a cheap food dehydrator with round stacking trays and a heat element at the bottom and did NOT have fun or success making very many things. the excalibur is a nice design.
so, while i think "cheaping out" on a blender is okay (i got the jack lalanne, still not cheap...but cheaper!), i would not recommended cheaping out on the deydrator!
I'm with Pete and Mama S on this....I bought an Excalibur 9 tray and a Vita Prep 3 and if you were to tell me I could only keep one I know which one I would fight to the death to hang on to - the Vita Prep all the way.
Maybe I just haven't found the right recipes to use in the dehydrator, but it just feels like eating 'differently processed' food whereas the vitaprep has brought me to the world of super smooth green smoothies...I use it every day, at least once (and I'm new to raw, still transitioning). I am lucky if I have used the dehydrator once a fortnight. Yep, it IS expensive (especially for us in the UK!), and OK maybe there is something in the polycarbonate jug 'controversy - but then what are the jugs in the cheaper versions made of? All I know is that my old bog standard blender started to smoke and cut out and my vita prep chews up anything in the blink of an eye.
I did a bit of internet research before buying...there isn't a site that is the best for everything, it pays to do a wee bit of web based window shopping before you buy.....
You Rock Pete!!!
I love reading your reply's on the forum.
Anyway...I would go with the Vitamix..hands down. You can do so much with it compared to a dehydrator that you would only use for some things. I use my Vitamix atleast 2-3 times a day!
Gotta say go with the Vitamix for sure! I have both but I use my Vitamix all the time. The dehydrator is great for making gourmet stuff and crackers/breads but usually you need a blender or food processor for those recipes anyway. With the Vitamix you can make all kinds of green smoothies and awesome soups right away. I use mine at least 3 times/day.
I know the whole jug thing is a bummer but I think I remember that when they came out with the new jug over here, i saw something about an upgrade for current vitamix users. Apparently, you could (for a small fee, of course) upgrade to the new material if you were already a vitamix customer.
But i gotta say that my very fave raw foodies have been getting amazing results for decades with the good ol "toxic" one so I don't think it's really that big of a deal.
Also, when you do get your dehydrator, if you have space definitely go with the 9-tray. Alas, I did not have space in my tiny NYC kitchen but I am trying to figure out where I can fit a 9-tray someday ;-)
Happy shopping,
Rachel
I think i would get the Vitamix. I rarely make dehydrated stuff - i don't really consider it truly raw. The thing about the container being toxic - I agree with Mama S - the stuff doesn't stay in it long enough to be that big of a concern.
I got my Vita-mix first and I use it every single day! It seems like one of the most if not the most important appliance. For me it is at least.
Congradulations on your expanding raw kitchen!

i personally bought a dehydrator first since they are cheaper.
but frankly, i wish i'd saved up for a vitamix instead! don't get me wrong: i dearly love my dehydrator and i'm glad i have it, but not a day goes by that i don't wish my blender was stronger. i use my blender every day, and my dehydrator about once a week or less.
Cinnamon powder is used in Chinese medicine for colds and flus. Use lots.
Iodine is also good for killing viruses and preventing sickness. I like Atomidine brand, but nascent is good, too.
i don't buy this....
if something were so necessary for our survival you'd think we would be better equipped to access and deal with it

Loren, the inorganic minerals and trace minerals that are vital to human function inside sea salt are transformed into organic forms by our bodies. Without sea salt, there is basically no way you get all the trace minerals we know and don't know w...
hi magical
I use to fast before I was a raw vegan so I did not feel I needed to detox first. But everyone is different. I think if someone is doing drugs and other things they might want to wait to do a long fast.
I love jumping rope and how it makes me feel. I love the way it makes my heart beat really fast, and the over-all energizing effects it creates in me.
I think variety in exercise is super beneficial... soft and hard, stillness and movement, slow ...
