I'd love to know how to incorporate uncooked grains into my diet like Quinoa. Do people do this and if so what how do you do it? I'm open to all grains used
unshelled quinoa is the easiest to sprout. just soak over night, then rinse in the following day. You'll see little tails on the suckers. Mix it with diced cherry tomatoes and cilantro for a delicious meal.
Hello, I haven't done this yet - but I looked up how to sprout quinoa and this is what I got:
-soak 1/3 cup seeds in jar for 2-4hrs
-drain and rinse seeds 2x/day for 2-4 days
-When sprouts are about 1 inch long, place near a window for chlorophyl to develop
Ah, yes, quinoa is an easy one to do...when it's time for rinsing, just be sure to rinse really well, since it'll form this soapy stuff called saponin (some South American cultures actually use it for cleaning their linens.)
I also think it's the most useful/worthwhile grain to use, because it's a "complete protein."
It is so cute when it starts to get tails! Haha! Gosh, only a raw-foodist would think that food was cute...
Dawnmarie's idea is good, to mix with some tomato and cilantro. I like to chop up some cucumber and fennel with it as well, squeeze some lemon and orange juice over it, and maybe sprinkle a little crushed walnut or hempseed on top. Let it all soak for a bit first, to meld the flavors. Yum yum.
It goes well on just about any type of salad, really, because of it's neutral taste.
Have fun!
hey bueller!
hows it going? havent talked to you in a while...we still have to get together one day soon!
im car shopping now so maybe after i have some wheels!
ok so i actually currently am not eating any grains cause i am on phase 1 (gabriel cousens)
when i do eat them it has to be in moderation so its actually pretty rare for me to eat them, i just do better w/o them
however if i was occasionally I would enjoy quinoa, millet, buckwheat groats, amaranth..
buckwheat is easy to sprout and is actually not even a grain its a seed from a flower I think....interesting
you can make great granolas from it by mixing it with whatever yuo want and pulsing it all together in the food processor...then dehydrate....or just whole as a basic cereal works great with a touch of cinnamon and stevia, and a pinch of celtic salt!!
at christmas time I made a pizza for my family and made the crust out of sproated buckwheat groats and sunflower seeds
another yummy thing is soaking the millet over night, them blending it in the AM with soaked sunflower seeds, and maybe even sesame seeds in the blender till smooth...can eat as is as a nice breakfast porridge! or you can pour it into a jar and cover the top with cheese cloth over night and it will create some wonderfully good bacteria and then you can eat that!
you can also soak, sprout, coat with a touch of cinnamon and dehydrate, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds if you like, and quinoa...a nice breakfast cereal with hemp milk or any other nut or seed milk!
also just as the others said soaking quinoa overnight or millet and then putting a nice oil, salt, cayenne, mix in some lettuces and whatever you like and you have a nice grain salad!
You're hysterical ! I love that your dogs like it. That is so cute! You are so sweet. I just have a hormone imbalance so hopefully nothing major. Thank you so much for your well wishes! I will try this out!
I love sprouted quinoa. I soak it over night then let it sprout for a day then I make this really yummy salad with it. This was from a vegetarian cookbook and I adapted it to raw. I forget the cookbook (sorry)
Quinoa Salad
1-1/2 cups quinoa, will look like more once it has been soaked.
Dressing
1/3 Cup Olive Oil
1/3 Cup Lime Juice, (3-4 juicy limes, should be enough)
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. coriander
1/4 tsp. dry mustard
1 clove of garlic, minced
2 Tbl. raw honey or agave
1 tiny piece of dried chipotle chili (1/8 of a teaspoon)
3 Scallions, finely diced
1 red bell pepper, finely diced
1/2 cup unsulphered, dried apricots, finely chopped
1/2 cup raisins, yellow or brown
1/4 Cup pine nuts
himalayan salt to taste
Rinse your quinoa well then soak overnight. Rinse again and let it sit until late in the afternoon near dinner time. You should see little tails on most of the quinoa. Blend all the dressing ingredients in the blender. Pour over quinoa, add in all the other components and stir it up. This is so good it has a mild note of spice on the back of your palette. So if you aren't into spice than just omit.

don't agree with the whole raw food creating a damp environment thing because of the wildly different effects of different raw foods. i've found candida to respond to 100% raw, several different approaches.
