Give it to me Raw

So, I wanted some other oppinions....

Does anyone else drink Almond milk from the store? I seem to feel like its raw... It doesn't say anything about pastuerization on the box. I've heard it's also easy to make your own almond milk. Any good instructions on how to do it yourself?

Also, Goji berries.
I love to munch on handfulls of goji berries lately. But I don't know how well my body is actually absorbing the nutrients from them. It seems that I am not digesting them all of the way, maybe.
Similar experiances?

Thanks! -K

Easy almond milk.... RAW....

Take 1-2 tbsp of raw almond butter....

Put in Vita Mix with 1-2 cups of water, vanilla, cinnamon, and agave.

Blend and enjoy over ice.

Almond milk from the store is feral. Avoid at all costs. Just read the ingredients. And it's definitely pasteurized. Everything in a container is pasteurized. Plus, like Carolyn said, it's pretty easy to make.

Okay, this makes sense...it comes in a box and has to be pasteurized. (Kombucha is an exception to this, it is raw and comes pakaged.)

Ingrediantes read: Almonds, Vanilla extract.

But I will try making it fresh, on my own for sure!

Those are the only ingredients??? What about water? What brand is it?

Pretty much anything tetrapak - ed like the "Almond Breeze" are going to be heated because of that particular packaging method (really interesting process in terms of packaging but not so raw.) The first time I tried "Almond Breeze" - not having tried homemade almond milk even - I thought "wow, tastes like stale almonds... great they found a way to sell me stale almonds expensively."

I am not 100% raw ... I poured it down the drain (it had been on sale, I didn't feel like dealing with trying to return it.) I have since made my own from almonds and it is SO much better!

The more complicated raw almond milk involves soaking 1 cup of raw almonds in 3 cups water overnight. The next day, liquify it in the blender and then separate the the solid from the liquid with either a sprout bag, cheese cloth or I've even used a coffee filter in a colander before.

You can sweeten it a little, add some vanilla or spices, just a little bit of sweetener does seem to really bring out the flavor somehow. If your sweetener needs to disolve (agave or whatever) I would add it before separating the mixture.

Carolyn's quick almond milk suggestion will actually probably work really well, I wonder how much difference in taste there is (may have to try it myself soon.) :)

Almond Breeze is delicious. But so is cake and chocolate and refined sugar. It's not THAT delicious. Stick to the homemade kind, girly.

Hmm....Do most of you all soak your goji berries first? Why? I have sundried goji's, I like to eat them as they are.

Is making goji tea better?

I've always wondered that too. I just eat my Gojis as is. I like them frozen too.

Just hope everyone is aware, if you are purchasing organic california almonds or raw almond butter made from californian almonds, they are not raw. Mandatory pastuerizing commenced last year. So if the ingredients say California almonds, regardless of whether it says raw, it is totally legal for manufacturer's to misrepresent the product as "raw". Business as usual for the FDA and corporate America.

You need to either buy direct from a farmer or get them from people like Seth at www.livingnutz.com (imported almonds) who actually care about telling the truth and giving consumers the best foods available.

For all you LA people, Rawsome foods on Rose in Venice has real raw almonds as well.

SunOrganic Farm a company from CA is still providing raw almonds! Thankfully we still have options

My recommendation is to make your own raw hemp milk......you can be assured it is raw and it is more nutritious anyway.
