I was just curious as to what everyone thinks about Stevia. Like it? Hate it? and for what reason. I happen to be a flavored Stevia fanatic, but it does creep me out a bit as to how sweet, good,, and somewhat artificial it seems. Opinions please?

Hi,
I love the idea of using a plant for sweetening, although I just can't stand stevia. I tried various sorts (ground leaves, liquid, tablets) and also tried only to use tiny amounts, but to me it still tastes kind of odd, similar to that gross taste artificial sweeteners have.
Maybe I was just unlucky or didn't use it the correct way though.
However, I do love the plant itself. I have one at home without ever having tried to use is fresh leaves (I heard some make a tea of it?), as I planted it after my stevia experiences :D
Anyway, I don't really need sweeteners. Whenever I make some kind of dessert or sweet stuff, I use dried fruit etc which already are incredibly sweet.
I personally don't like the taste of stevia either. Even small amounts to me taste like artificial sweetener, and I've never liked that taste. I've just learned to appreciate things without added sweetness. Fruit and %80 cacao chocolate are my desserts now.
I really like stevia and have used it for a while. If you add too much of it, it can give a sharp after taste. The best value for stevia seems to be from KAL. For container size it may be a little more expensive than Sweetleaf, but it is more dense and a lot stronger (3 or 4x). Even though the price may be intimidating at first, so little stevia is needed that it is a great deal. Definately cheaper than Splenda (without the sideeffects). I had a stevia plant grow here this year. There seems to be a real art to harvesting the actual sweetness from it, as I could not get much from it. Even so, I just added dried leaves to my tea and got a few tea-cup-sweetenings worth. There seems to be a real art to harvesting the stevia, but there is a lot of information on it. I would greatly recommend it; particularily for people with candida.
I'm not really a fan. It reminds me too much of artificial sweeteners like Splenda. But, everyone has their own tastes. For example, I love cilantro, when it makes other people cringe.

hi. stevia is a herb that has been used for 1000's of years in paraguay (bad spelling!) as a sweetener. it's the only non-sugar alternative legally allowed in japan, and has been used as their sweetener for anything "diet" since the 70's. they won't let splenda, or aspertame ect into their conuntry at all. but they let stevia in. although the coke diet pop uses apartame and they won't change their recipe, so in japan this is actually the one product which is allowe to use a poison sweetener.
stevia actually has health benefits. it's antiviral (like garlic) and balances out blood sugars.
you've got to be carefull which brand you use! sweet leaf is the only one i use. they use inulin fiber (a vegtable fiber) as their filler. other companies us maltodextrin, which is a refined sugar leached from rice. these products would contribute to suger swings for those who are sensetive.
I've been using the organic stevia leaf powder and it's working swell. If I use too much it does taste as if it were a fake sugar. Not a fan of agave but I do use a good quality honey which I've been into trying all different brands. Honey has various medicinal properties and taste the best I think!
I recently read in a local natural publication that stevia may soon become illegal in the US and is some states it already is...if you chew on the leaves of the stevia plant it gives you the same reaction as taking LSD...that is all I know about the plant and have not tried it as a sweetner...they don't call it sweetleaf for nothing...xox
You might have heard about the plant Salvia Divinorum, and have confused it with Stevia. Even then, the effects of Salvia are not comparable to LSD. ;)
I'm not denying the veracity of those emails... who knows. However, here is a little background on Tim Ball. I have a hard time trusting anything he says.
