Give it to me Raw

I thought this was a joke when I first read it but nope!

I guess raw is officially hip if pepsi are using it to brand their product.

Hmmmm.. check out all these delicious raw ingredients.. corn syrup ... plain caramel colouring.. coffee .. tantaric acid .. cane sugar ..

oh, yummy!

Pepsi launch new drink made from 'all natural' ingredients

It may not be as healthy as a freshly squeezed juice, but Pepsi claim their new drink is made from all natural ingredients.

Pepsi Raw, which will initially only be launched in the UK, is the first drink the multi-national cola brand has added to its range in more than ten years.

Pepsi claims the new drink is made from natural ingredients and contains no artificial preservatives, colours, flavourings or sweeteners and that by replacing corn syrup with cane sugar, it has managed to reduce the calorie content of a 300ml bottle from around 120 calories to around 90 calories.

The drink apple extract, plain caramel colouring, coffee leaf, tantaric acid from grapes, gum arabic from acacia trees, cane sugar and sparkling water. It is paler in colour and less fizzy than other cola brands.

Traditionally, Pepsi contains fructose corn syrup, sugar, artificial colourings, phosphoric acid, caffeine, citric acid and natural flavours.

The company hopes that the introduction of Pepsi Raw will compete for a greater share of the cola market and help knock rival Coca-Cola off its soft drinks perch, Pepsi has added a new drink to its range for the first time in more than ten years.

The company hopes that the introduction of Pepsi Raw will compete for a greater share of the cola market from the leader Coca-Cola and at the same time it will capitalise on the growing consumer demand for more natural products.

The UK cola market is worth £6 billion a year and is dominated by the two companies that have been rivals for more than 100 years.

Pepsi marketing director, Bruno Gruwez, said: “We are really proud that the UK is leading the way with the launch of Pepsi Raw, which is the most significant innovation from Pepsi UK in the last 15 years.”

Initially, Pepsi Raw will only be available in selected bars and clubs in seven cities — London, Manchester, Glasgow, Brighton, Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool, although a wider roll-out is expected later in the year.

There is nothing raw about "caramel coloring". Do they think if they add the word plain before it that all of a sudden its a great thing to consume?! What methods are they using to grow and produce those items described?!?!?!? I doubt they'd even say! Everything about this is completly malicious!! I hope raw foodist are smart enough to smell the crap in the bottle.

It is strange that they can call it raw though, since I am guessing it is boiled to create the syrup..Seems like false advertisment. Although it sounds better health wise for the kids who will still drink sodas than regular pepsi..Just seems strange to call it raw..

I don't think most of society sees "raw" as not heated. I keep coming back to "Sugar in the Raw" - it's boiled in order to evaporate the liquid off to create granular cane sugar for example. I think people who have started juicing DO see "raw" as unheated though so AT CURRENT I think it's more of a difference in perception - what you've been exposed to, how you think.

Raw material nothing added VS raw and uncooked.

Alright, so maybe for all of us who had taken their great health (and all that comes with it) to the next level, it is definetely not something we wanna consume ...but for those others addicted to high sugary carbonated poison, it's a great step forward! You gotta start somewhere. The word 'Raw' is probably not used by pepsi the same way it's used on this web site..:))) It could be...

I beleive that it is all those conscious eaters and doers that invoke these positive changes in the rest of the world... So as far as I'm concerned: Great baby steps, Pepsi!

Yeah Pete, you're right on defining 'raw':))) I'm sure it has more difinitions than just "uncooked":))))

I don't know if Pepsi cares about consumers health... I'm guessing NOT.. and it's probably a money thing, but the end result counts:)))

Now excuse me, while I go supercharge myself with some green goodness:) Cheers!

I can appreciate the points that Olessia and Hilary are making. Maybe this is a small step in the right direction for those who are completely addicted to soda, but... I mean this drink is still really, really awful. Sugar is like poison to our bodies and flavoring is just more chemical processed crap. I don't see it as that much of an improvement.

It's like asking would you rather get hit by a bus or a sedan? Both'll still do a heck of a lot of damage.

Well if history has anything to say about it, the term raw will soon be tainted to mean something that it's not. Remember organic? Now what does that mean? Now that the big companies got in on the organic wagon they changed organic to mean something entirely different than it did.

That's what worries me about Pepsi co and the other makers of inflammatory juices.

Not only do they not care about your health, but they are entirely interested in creating addictions on all levels. I would venture to say that they probably have huge holdings in the pharmaceutical companies and vice versa.

As the author Michael Pollan astutely observed, it's astonishing that we now live in the day of the organic factory farm.

i think this is going to be a flop. the problem is that, from what i've seen, the raw community tries to avoid supporting big corporations in general...they're not really the target audience for pepsi and people who drink a lot of soda probably could care less about it being raw

I seriously doubt that most of the people on this group are the intended audience to be honest. I think that some of the flop factor will actually be determined by taste, branding, advertising efforts (as well as who those advertising efforts are directed towards - if it's an actual correct fit) and price.

I think there are a lot of people who are interested in healthier who aren't gung ho into the dedication needed to live a 100% raw lifestyle like many people chatting on GITMR.

Honestly the 100% raw foodies can sometimes be a bit annoying because many seem to think it's the only way or the best way of eating for everyone. I personally can't eat raw bananas. It has to do with the starches and how they convert to sugar. Technically I can eat a raw really overripe banana (black peel, mush inside, kinda gross) but I can also eat bananas if they are cooked. It is painful for me to eat a banana the way most of you would. It took me a bit of research to figure this out and then also to understand the chemical why of it all. Eating cooked foods is not like being hit by a bus. Yes, some things are worse for you than others and some things are a problem if they aren't in moderation but for most people for the most part a little sugar, cooked food that isn't cooked to mush ... it's not going to kill you. I also believe that there are reasons that some things do get cooked ... that certain fermented foods can into being for a reason also... I also believe that some people ARE better off eating 100% raw because of the way THEIR bodies metabolize food.
::end vent::

What I personally want to see is healthier options... give people a choice ... give people a way to transition. Sigh - big business creates some of these problem but it's not going to go away over night.

I went from drinking regular store milk and getting mucousy to drinking Horizon Organic milk - yes, technically one of those factory farmed organics - but my allergy problems got better and it led me to purchase some Rebekah Grace milk (low temp pasturized real organic and non-homogenized milk available from a single producer in my state) and my allergy problems were even less - then I bought a cow share from a really awesome farmer and I have no reaction to that milk at all. Didn't cure my allergies but no added problems from the milk.

I do think if I hadn't tried the Horizon, I might not have spent more money on the Rebekah Grace and ultimately bought the cow share. Not everyone is at the same place in their lives as people here are.

Hi El-bo, You're absolutely right; sodium is not the problem, but sodium chloride, and inorganic mineral salt which always causes water retention and raises blood pressure. We don't need any of that.
