Has anyone experienced low estrogen levels while being a raw vegan. Also, if anyone has any good and specific sources about the link between hormones and diet I would be greatly appreciative. I've read all the big books so I'm really looking for specifics (and yes I have a doctor, this is just more research). Also looking for info that is NOT menopause related.
This is turning out to be a fascinating topic and I am learning so much. I had no idea about any of these effects of a raw vegan diet on us women! Sounds like things just keep getting better! I will post a roundup of information this weekend on my blog (www.buellerskitchen.com) in my "girls corner" . This is where I discuss everything girly about everything I have found as I continue my mad research. I'll also include what people have shared here as well as links, books, references, etc. so we can all keep learning as there doesn't seem to be much out there on this topic. I think it'd be nice to have a bunch of resources in one place, don't you?
I've created a group called Raw Women. I hope all you ladies will join!
I'm sorry if what I wrote made you afraid for your sister's health. *hugs* I'm pretty sure it only causes a problem if there's already an existing heart valve disorder.
In the past, I used to worry about my loved ones a lot. I don't anymore, however. I love them, and offer help when they ask for it, but I have realized that we are all on different paths and some of us are ready to take our health into our own hands and others aren't. The most I can do is stay vibrantly healthy and hope that they'll learn by example or ask for my help.
I have a friend who's diabetic and the Metformin seems to have helped her quite a bit, compared to other medicines she was taking. For me, however, it was a mixed result--it did what it claimed it would do, but also made my heart worse.
Hey Rawzi- I used to buy dried vitex berries and make tea to help with cramps. I think it's native to the Mediterranean region. They're like coriander seeds and taste kind of peppery. I know that vitex takes a few months to effect hormone levels. With ashwaganda, the dried root is used. Mountain Rose herbs has quality bulk herbs and you can get seeds to plant for both of these (I checked.) Another female tonic herb that sounds interesting is shatavari.

Hi Wendi Dee, thanks so much for sharing that! I was diagnosed over 10 years ago with PCOS but they've never found cysts, my hormone levels are ok and the only symptoms are weight and hirsutism - so I won't really believe them until I've lost weight. I'm going mad with my period... about 2 years ago, I had it straight for 9 months with the days of me using a "regular" tampon being the lightest days. Then I had about a 9 month break, it was all over the place for a year, and now I've had the darn thing for coming on 3 months. I'm just scared to go to a doctor again in case they tell me to have a hysterectomy (I'm 29 and want kids). I've never seen an endocrinologist so that sounds like what I should do. Do you think it would be worth having the Metformin for a while to get things in order then go off it or are the side effects (and the fact its something foreign going into your body) not worth it?
Oh, Kate. It's difficult recommending what's best for someone else. All I can say is that the ONLY reason I went on the Metformin was to see if it worked, to determine if insulin resistance really was the cause of my menstrual problems my entire life. Once I realized it definitely WAS the problem, and I was experiencing normal cycles, I went off it and relied on diet, alone.
I'm still experimenting to see what will cause my spotting between day 14 and 32 to stop. At first I was thinking lots of oranges (Vitamin C, I'm thinking) was making the spotting stop. Now, I'm not sure. You can try it and let me know how it goes--increase your Vitamin C and see if your extra bleeding ceases. The other thing I'm still experimenting with is a raw version of the Insulin Resistance Diet--where you include protein when you have high sugar foods. The thing is, though, that I want to decrease my amount of fat in my diet this year, so it's hard to increase the protein without adding fat.
Whatever you do, I hope you continually search for an answer for your body's irregularity. :-)

Wendi,
Have you ever tried using spirulina or chlorella, bee pollen, maca, for protein? I take it you maybe rely on nuts a lot? I use a lot of chlorella, and it seems to really help my blood sugar. I just really feel more even keel, I haven't tested my blood sugar or anything, so its just my feeling. I make a smoothie out of it which includes 1-2 T. chlorella, a few macadamias for creaminess, 1t. bee pollen, 1t. maca, 1/3 cup blueberries, 1-2T. goji berries, sometimes a few cashews, some dry coconut, 1t. cinamon (which I've heard is good for sugar levels, and it tastes great) and I used to put raw cacao in. I thought it tasted like chocolate milk. LOL
Anyway, I've come to enjoy the flavor. When I used spirulina I didn't like it as well, but I like chlorella better.
I have a strong dislike for spirulina and I'm thinking it would be the same for chlorella (but, I've never tried it). Bee pollen is out because I'm a vegan. Maca I'm just not comfortable taking--it just doesn't feel right (to me) to take something that will cause a pregnant woman to miscarry. I'm just taking it all slow...allowing my body to heal on the raw foods and hoping that my instinct is right that my body will then have normal cycles.
So far, so good. After one full year of 100% raw vegan my cycles come about ever 32 days. I just have to wait longer, I guess, for the spotting between days 14 and 32 to go away.

Chlorella is different than chlorella. when I tried spirulina in my smoothie, I couldn't stand it, but I really don't mind chlorella. It might be wortth tasting. It did take me awhile to get used to the flavor, though.
Is it true that maca causes miscarriage? why is that? Would you mind explaining more? I thought I might be pregnant a couple times this past 8 months, but then got my period late. Could that be why?
Wow, I never knew that. I know it affects hormones, so I assume that's why.
I was listening to Gabriel Cousens talk once (on the Net) and he's the one who said that it's important to not take maca when pregnant. Google it and you might find more people saying the same thing.
I just wanted to add my two cents, when I was 100% raw my periods also disappeared. Everyone kept telling me that it was not normal and I better start eating "correctly" because I could damage my body. I actually found that same article a few years back that was posted. It's very intersting and I feel it to be true.
Thanks for reminding me of this wonderful benefit of eating raw. I enjoyed not ever having my period and having no cramps each month. Especially after I figured out that I wasn't pregnant, lol. If I remember correctly, I went through quite a few of pregnancy tests before I figured out what was going on!!

Hi Peggy
I've only been eating raw for about 5 or 6 months and it's pretty much been over the last 2 months that I've noticed a distinct lack of periods or they are entirely different from what I experienced before. I guess I'll need to give it another couple of months to see what (if anything) happens :)
Hi Peggy. . . my periods ceased as soon as i went raw which was 100% overnight (with the exception of herbal tea). . .
I defnitely began to drop a lot of weight. . . but still felt amazing and energetic. . .yes definitely less food intake but of course chock full of nutrients and enzymes which is the difference!. . .
and after about a year and a half of raw. . . a bit of weight began to come back- I'm still "underweight" with a "too low BMI" but it's in quotes because it's by the standard american diet and medical associations' averages. . . and not something I put my trust in.
I feel wonderful, and still have the very normal mucus discharge and vaginal fluid changes that are described in natural fertility tracking/methods.
Watch all three nights online. Some great info was given, but seemed like it was all about getting people to buy more and more products. All I know is that they made a TON of money.
I irrigate my nose with salt water after almost every shift. I use a little bit of salt with my toothpaste every now and again. My silver fillings are pretty stable and I've noticed a metallic taste in my mouth whenever I use salt so I don't. Clov...
I believe that the body can heal itself if given the support. I'm a nurse in a nursing home and I've seen the body cling to life no matter how much poison is thrown at it.
Sounds ridiculous to me. Anyone actually older and experiencing longevity there? I doubt it. I live out in the country in the general direction of God's fart zone and perhaps that's better than getting caught up in this sort of materialistic stuff...
